Battlefield 1 Reveal Trailer, PC/PS4/XB1, Oct 21st [Up2: Screens, Info, Open Beta]

He wasn't shot while his motorcade was in a 'confused haste to get out of Sarajevo'. They were on their way to visiting the people wounded by the initial bombing in the hospital when they passed by Princip.

Yeah I sorta wondered after I posted it whether I said was accurate. I remember there was an issue of the driver not knowing the right way to the Hospital though.

Unrelated, but there's a rumor going around about the campaign. It comes from some twitter source though, so is there any reason to believe its veracity?

Yeah, as far as I'm aware that was the case. Partially related: A redditor recently posted a photo of Franz Ferdinand they personally colourised and I think it looks marvellous. On the right is how that coat looks nowadays, blood still visible over a hundred years later.

He wasn't defenestrated though. They just shot him and his wife.

Ah crap. It must've been some other defenestration that I'm thinking of that started another war.

See, THIS IS WHY WE NEED THIS GAME. Our cultural memory of WWI is woefully inadequate.

Most of my understanding of World War I comes from a mix of watching the "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" and having played "Toy Soldiers" on Xbox. Take that, Paul Fussel!

This channel will get you covered until the action in October: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCUcyEsEjhPEDf69RRVhRh4A

And take a look into Hardcore History's series about the war. I think it is available for free on youtube and in other places as well.

I don't know how you guys cannot like the music. Its probably the best music pairing I have heard this gen.

Probably that Battlefield has one of the most iconic theme songs of all time in gaming and they went to something else (a weird version at that).

I really doubt they'll change or remove any of those since they all seem like standard, throwaway achievements. If anything they'll probably add really weird achievements afterward like killing people with a shovel or something.

Battlefield 4 Premium Edition is 109 DKK (about USD 16) in Denmark. Is it worth the extra over the standard version?

Can't decide whether I should get some BF4 action before BF1

Maybe. I've heard that they're planning on making each expansion free one at a time but premium has a few other bonuses besides owning all the expansions. Plus you'd get it all at once.

I don't know how active the maps are these days, but you'll still get a lot of new weapons besides. And many bonus gold battlepacks with premium.

So 6 episodes? I guess each covers a different front or character? I wonder if the levels will be themed by fronts and then you play different characters in that region, or if you play the same character throughout each episode

Different characters in a region would be really cool. Maybe each episode is pretty long and covers multiple objectives and direction. Maybe like mini campaign stories for each character and region.

Can anyone explain to me why COD and BF even get compared to one another? They are alike in so few, few ways I just don't understand. It's like comparing Bloodborne to Witcher 3.

BF franchise

64 player max
huge maps
slower paced multiplayer generally
signature mode is control point capture
vehicles are key to the experience
less than half the games have a campaign

COD

Known equally for it's campaigns and its multiplayer
small team multiplayer is the focus
generally no vehicles
fast paced multi
not a huge variation between game modes

I really don't see many similarities outside of generally being military FPS games in the same way that Bloodborne and Witcher are gothic / fantasy 3rd person RPG's...I wish this would just stop because the last thing I want is for Battlefield to become MORE like COD.

I know right ! But people have to shit on the other if they like one.

A slight correction though, COD has a lot of gamemodes with a lot of variation.halo is the only FPS that matches it on consoles tbh as far as game mode variety is considered.

There is only one way this games plot can begin: a first person perspective from the Archduke of Ferdinand during his defenestration. FPS view of him being tossed out the window.

Cut immediately to Harlem, where the protagonist is sitting eating dinner and asks his wife to pass him the mustard. FORESHADOWING!

what window? he was shot while riding in an open top car...

It's not that, it's just that I thought achievements/trophies were some of the last things to go in.

I don't know what the circumstances are behind the leak, but it's possible they've already worked on Origin integration, including the achievements.

Yeah I confused the defenestration of Prague that happened in 1618 and triggered the 30 years war with the assassination of Ferdinand that triggered WWI.

I'm somewhat of an idiot. STILL my idea of a first person POV scene of Ferdinand getting assassinated in his motorcade would be a delightful callback to the Modern Warfare 1 scene in the Middle East (and a big screw you to activision).

In all likelihood, the game is mostly, if not entirely, playable from beginning to end and close to feature complete at this point.

This are not the achievements for Xbone/PS4. This are the Origins Achievements which for the most part are still a bit different than the Console Achievements.

Semi-auto rifles and SMGs and machine guns? WTF?

WHERE ARE MY BOLT ACTION RIFLES!

EDIT Applies to others as well, rifle fights are so much more interesting than SMG+melee fights.
I don't mind CQB at times but man, this is WWI when rifles were very common.

Agreed 100%

The response to this reveal has to be energizing for DICE. CoD trailer shenanigans aside, people seem really into it. This setting is one that was always written off, even by me initially, and is uncommon in games but this trailer sold everyone on it hard.

The odd looking tanks, hellish landscapes, and brutal close-quarters combat make it look very different even from the WW2 shooters everyone remembers

I agree

I've played enough WWII games for a lifetime. This seems cool and the trailer did a great job convincing me that the weaponry and technology of the period were appropriate for the BF experience.

That and the fact that the modern and sci-fi shooters reached the same saturation as the WW2 themed games in the last decade (even in NeoGAF you could easily find people vocal about this need to go back to historic settings for quite some time now). Even so, DICE was bold to put up such concept - I'd love to see how they pitched this idea to EA's big wigs.

About the trailer comparison with CoD, it just goes to show you that they fully capitalized on that saturation: people enjoyed, the repercution about the idea of going back to past is positive. And the trailer is very well thought off, something you can't say about CoD IW: somehow, they made the Solar System's collonization look a bit boring.

My sister texted me yesterday saying that her boyfriend really wanted to get the game but that he needed a PlayStation first. I told her that he has until October lol. Anecdotal nd all but I thought it was interesting.

He thought he needed a PlayStation to play the new Battlefield or he needed to spend his money on a PlayStation before a game?

Also below are the list of achievement/trophy titles that absolutely must be in this game:

Not so quiet on the western front

Howitzer? I hardly knew her!

No time to Marne

Sopwith camel toe to toe

Sleepless in Somme

Feeling gassy

Getting a leg up on the Ottomans

Cat and Mauser

Can't decide whether I should get some BF4 action before BF1
The overwhlming players are on the free standard maps, obviously. There are some modes that are exclusive to DLC, but again, they aren't as popular. For me, I bought BF4 a year after release and so the difference between the standard and the full version wasn't that much really and plus you get the hassle free of getting the message "you can't join this server because you don't have all the maps".
I say compare the prices and decide from there. Whatever you go with, BF4 is a lot of fun and it's filled with those 'only in battlefield' moments. Fun times.
Press F to brutally murder
I can see them making a quick rock, paper, scissors as apposed to the quicktime/'who pushes faste' style in 4- since they mentioned it is more than just a quick stab and you're done. Maybe a friend can join in the brutal personal kill too? You can be trying to stop an enemy from plunging their knife into you then a friend comes by and whacks the back of his head with a club. Now there's a thought.
From what I've read the side loading magazine offset the weight and make it more difficult to aim apart from when mounted.
Ah. I haven't thought about the balance issue.

I had the random thought of players having to do a Gears of War chainsaw style battle to decide who gets murdered by a spade in BF1. :D

They could have easily just showed us D-Day in Frostbite and those wanting historic shooters again would have probably been pleased

But tackling World War 1 is really bold

looking at that trailer again, I just still don't know what to think.

bold choice for sure, but eh. WW1 is just a real personal war to tackle. There is no strong disconnect for the player. Trench warfare was disgusting and horrifying and personal. If they don't handle it with some level of respect for the men that lived and died in those trenches, but also don't turn away players who want nothing to do with that gameplay style... I just don't know.
