NPD Sales Results for April 2016 [Sony, MS, & Nintendo refuse to comment on hardware]

i know bundles are the reason but would knack count as a new ip selling better than bloodborne or even driveclub at this point could be higher than bloodborne

Well, it is April. This happens every April. The PS4 is flat, not down, at least, so it's not all terrible.

XBO is down YoY, but there were better trade-in deals last year.

185K < Ryse < 200K
Sunset Overdrive: 110K

What was QB again? 150K? If so, Ryse... oh wait, that tricky wording. It says Microsoft Studios IP. Neither Ryse nor SO are MS IPs, QB is. So technically, yes they're "right."

technically they could be counting the pc version and if they are really being sneaky they could count the digital preorder on xbone as two copies since it does come with a code for the pc version lol

This is what actually concerns me a bit.

I remember people saying that this console generation's hardware is probably front-loaded.

Also, physical retail game sales down almost as much. Would feel pretty bad if this is really a trend, toward digital-only.

Please tell me I'm wrong :/

I do think the console platform holders' irrational plans are slowing down the sales as people may engage in a wait and see mode. A slim model at reduced price would be enough to shake things up a bit but no, they had to go with the iterative console model.

Once again this is not the case. April is a slow month. The average consumer knows jack shit about the neo rumors.

My grudge against the plans are affecting my judgement. (Although the fall is year over year, what moved the consoles 1 year ago, I'm wondering, and I asked this earlier in the thread to no answers..)

Amazing how quickly Division went from Destiny-Killer to "anyone still playing that?"

You could tell that from the beta. I have no idea why people went and bought it after they played the beta. It was boring. It's just a Watch Doge online created with the Ubisoft mediocre random machine.

Yea going forward you have to wonder what MS will do as far as investing in New IP and even their existing properties. I would assume Halo and Gears will make them lots of money simply because of the business model they've built around that.

But them cancelling that Fable game that was close to completion it's just going to be interesting to see what they do. The TR deal didn't mean much to them after a while.

I mean I love that the Xbox is getting games like QB, Scalebound, ReCore etc. I look forward to picking up and playing all of them, but their audience just doesn't seem to gravitate towards those titles.

I hope that the rumored Knack 2 will be a 40 dollar budget game like ratchet. There is no way it will sell as much as the first game at $60. It could do very well at 40 and if it gets better reviews then the first game.

Knack 2 will be the big showcase for PS4Neo, just as Knack was for PS4 (and still is).

Not seeing the alarm on PS4 being flat. May is going to be a big month with Uncharted 4 and Overwatch. People who follow the industry less maniacally still know what E3 is, and that price drops can happen there (although recent history would suggest the fall is more likely). The hardware is closer to its initial price point at this stage of the life cycle than even PS2 was (bundling kinda muddies the waters there though). I think they will stick with the current approach until at least October. After that, $299 along with the usual slate of big fall games will do very well for them.

I'm not personally interested in PS4K at the moment, but that might be a way for them to retain ASP since if it is handled correctly, it could be a more attractive option to new PS4 owners going forward than the base model. The only bump in the road I see for PlayStation long term is if PSVR has less time on the market prior to a "PS5" launch than Kinect did prior to Xbox One, does Sony get some false sense of confidence about bundling VR into the next console at a higher launch price? $399.99 and steady slate of games (first party in the spring, third party focus in the fall each year so far) is what worked so well for PS4.

But, Destiny is online only and people still play that game.
Competition on the market. Other publishers were actively terrified by Activision's Destiny + Advanced Warfare combo.

Rachet is amazing and deserves those sales. Happy for Insomniac. DS3 is great as well. Sony killing it in software this month with The Show in there too.

I wonder if the Destiny April patch took any of the Divisions April Content Release cake. Hit 30 in the Division and was about to pick it back up with that patch and then was like "wait, Destiny patch hits today, change of plans." I really need to get back to the Division...

Its interesting. It almost feels that even though there was a delay to learn from Destiny's mistakes, they didnt seem to learn a ton. However, a lot of what they did learn, I wish Destiny would learn (like optional matchmaking for everything...).

This talk about MS and their IP is what has me quite interested in E3 this year. This will be the first E3 without ntrknl (sp?) leaks and the new PC initiative. Add on the X1.5 and this makes for a highly intriguing E3 for me. I want to see what direction their software goes in.

There will be games with dudes and guns. My uncle gave me the scoop.

This actually has me pretty excited. I really hope that there is no doom/gloom this E3 and that posters here are wrong about MS leaving the console business. I'm hopeful/cautious about this upcoming E3. Hopefully there are a buuuuunch of new announcements that show Microsoft is in it for the long haul.

I hope that the rumored Knack 2 will be a 40 dollar budget game like ratchet. There is no way it will sell as much as the first game at $60. It could do very well at 40 and if it gets better reviews then the first game.

If they are working on Knack 2 they are simply taking the piss, terrible game with no clear target audience or reason for existing.

Those resources are better served elsewhere.

Sorry but this is not Microsoft's fault. Remedy received a new opportunity from MS after Alan Wake and they blew it again.

What do they need to have a big sucess? I think it's entirely up to them.

Remedy were obviously told tv was an essential part of the Xbox future and they have paid the price for that initial reveal. The whole system was doomed from launch and QB unfortunately was part of that . Not saying it would have sold amazingly without the tv bullshit but the time spent on it was a joke.

Uncharted 1 wasn't a masterpiece either. Second part always is the best.

Does MS own the Sunset Overdrive IP?

I think that was one of the conditions for signing with MS -- IP ownership.

I'd be curious to know if Sunset Overdrive 2 (if its being made) will be multiplatform and IG got a new publisher.

I believe Insomniac owns the SO IP, which I think was really important to them (and I believe I remember reading that it was an important part of their decision to go with MS on it). That said, I think there was a clause in their deal that let MS prevent sequels if they wanted (I could be wrong on this - I'm going off of memory and don't have time to look back at that).

Yeah, the type of software, the amount of software, the focus on what particular software, etc...

I'm not interested in the X1 but I am quite interested in how MS will be handling the X1 from this point forward.

1) I think that would make 0 difference to how it sold. I would argue, strongly, that the TV segments' inclusion or exclusion would make a very negligible impact on sales. The MUCH stronger variables affecting QB sales are the XB1's overall performance and its mindshare in the gaming world right now.

2) Perhaps - although I really enjoyed everything about QB, so I'm glad they did what they did. It is unfortunate that it was so expensive, though.

Does anyone have the numbers for Alan Wake's opening for comparison? Also, anyone have any idea how it did digitally? "90% digital!!!" jokes aside, I do wonder if digital made up a larger chunk of sales than normal since the incentive to buy digital was pretty big (at least for me) with the cross-buy with W10.

Watch Dogs numbers are a bit off. Here all precise numbers:

PS4 - 583,000
XB1 - 363,000
360 - 172,000
PS3 - 138,000

Also, Mario Kart sold 352,000 unit at retail, but we know thanks Nintendo it sold 415,000 unit including digital.

I know we use retail numbers most of times cause we don't know digital, but when we know, you should say the total numbers, maybe say inc. digital. ;)

Also, Splatoon sold 165,000 including digital.

I believe the highest first month for a resistance title was Resistance 2 at 385k.

So right now, nobody knows.

Resistance: Fall of man - 71,000
Resistance 2 - 385,000
Resistance 3 - 180,000

Thanks!

But given that R&C was developed at their North Carolina studio, it probably had a very small budget relative to their Burbank studio titles.

I think the great thing of all of this is that these sorts of titles can do well at a lower price point and lower budget...they just need to get made. I hope Sony keeps funding them.

Oh wow, it was developed by their NC studio? It's nice to see them going from smaller, less well received titles to something as expansive and acclaimed as the new Ratchet.

Yeah, hopefully!

I wouldn't say they are leaving yet, but it's clear their priorities are changing. Their whole windows initiative is proof of this. I do wonder if they'll invest in a large AAA franchise again. Or just double down on their tentpoles. Halo and Gears, KI has to be doing well for them.

We're entering a very interesting and crucial time in the console space. The iterative console rumors have me the most excited because we are at a time where these companies want to lock you into an ecosystem. No one is trying to start from scratch at the start of each new gen anymore. Too many risks and variables there. I mean just look at the 360>XB1. A complete 180 in terms of performance. .

Digital sales are still a tiny amount compared to the retail number, and NPD is retail only. I'd rather keep the comparisons on a retail only basis.
