I'm wondering how the teams will stop people from just coming to the game with thermoses/drinking containers and using the refill stations to fill up their drinks.

This is great. Prices are so egregiously high in stadiums to the point of making absolutely no sense. It's even worst than the airport.

Glad the Falcons are doing this and hope others follow suit.

I'm guessing the non-water refill stations are still behind the counter. If you bring in an empty bottle and use a water filling station like they have in airports good on ya.

You can buy Bulk 20 oz Paper cups for 9 cents each
You yourself can buy a non bulk 5 Gal syrup bag for $86 that makes 192 20 oz drinks.
So assuming they somehow DONT get a bulk discount, it costs 9 cents for cup, 1 cent lid, 1.5 cent straw, 44 cents for 20 oz of soda (also assuming they dont give you an assload of zero cost ice to take up room, which everyone does) for a total of 55.5 cents for the first cup and 44 cents for every refill, you'd have to get 4 refills before they started losing money. And that's worst case, no bulk soda discount, no ice cutting the soda, etc.

For them, they prob. get soda at aorund $55 a box, meaning 11.5 cents for cup+straw+lid and 28 cents for the 20 oz of soda, or 39.5 cents for initial cup and 28 cents for refill, and taking 6 refills to start losing money. Still assuming no ice cutting which increases that to 7 or 8

They could RFID the cups. Or go even cheaper and 'keurig' stamp the bottoms. Shit I should patent that.

I doubt it would be that big of a problem. Surely there aren't that many grimey people out there.

keep your strippers out of my American football
When I was in the Georgia Dome for the Peach Bowl they had unlimited refills. I thought I died and went to soda heaven. I was too lazy to get up and get more than one cup though.

The Falcon's/AU relationship is everything I want the Patriots/Revs relationship to be and how awesome Arthur Bank has been in what he's done for Atlanta United is depressing in all honesty.

How much for the opportunity to see a good team play?

they get to see good teams all the time

This is an awesome gesture. Kudos to them -- these teams make so much money, they really should help make it a little more affordable once you've spent a shitload to get in the door.

I imagine they'll still have people selling bottles of things walking through the stands.

Not to mention the free refills will probably require you wait in line; which will increase the already typically crazy concession lines at games.

This is like how they give free refills at movie theaters; hardly anyone is taking advantage of it because you paid to sit and watch a movie that you can't pause. Not to mention the "consume liquids = have to pee more" factor.

It's more of a marketing gimmick to give people perceived value; "I'll guess I'll buy that, free refills!" (meanwhile the majority don't use them due to the inconvenience of missing out on the product you paid good money to see in order to use them)

As stated in the OP:

McKay says soda area won't be behind the concession stands. Instead, soda will be self-serve refillable and away from stands for ease of use

Well that's good; thanks for the correction.

You still will probably end up with lines at these things; and you have to miss the game to refills.

So while that will help, my point still stands.

Well the obvious difference between a game and a movie in regards to free refills is that there are breaks in the action at games (halftime, commercial breaks, in between quarters) that lessen/minimize the amount of time missed watching the product, so it's not quite the same thing.

Hope this sets a trend for the NFL games but I doubt it, especially in the age of greedy sports teams.

Also, Coke Freestyle but no Pepsi Freestyle machines despite them being NFL sponsored.

These all sound great, but $5 beer worries me a little bit. They don't want people getting drunk in the stands, and $5 is a price that people are going to buy 2, 3, or 4 beers for.

How is it different than buying a couple of six packs and tailgating all morning and getting into the stadium drunk

I've been to lots of NFL games and every single break is a mad-house at the concession stands. The longer the break the more people too; you are likely to miss part of the game going to concessions at any point in time.

Either way it's not the only factor; most people don't need or want a refill on a large soda in the first place.

The syrup is cheap but think about the lost revenue in comparison to people who would have refilled.

I'm just thinking this out for myself, but i'd be much more likely to wait in line for another hot dog if I could fill up my coke before standing in line.
Who'm I kidding, I'm drinking a beer anyway.

The sodas being $2 is the actual value here.

Also, they have TVs all over the place in the Dome. I imagine there will be even more in this place, you ain't missing much.

A survey I filled out even inquired about the possibility of ordering from your phone for a extra couple of dollars and either being able to pick it up or have it delivered to you.

Trust me, if you've ever worked fast food concession and sold beer to people, the price never matters

People will buy the same amount of beer regardless of price

the drinks are cheaper than the cups. But usually there is staff around at free-refill stations to help, ensure their is ice, police that sort of thing.

But why bother dragging in a thermos (is that even allowed by security in a dome?) when you can just pay 2 dollars?

Are they gonna break out the zaniness level that ballparks do? If not then I'm still a firm no, the drive ain't worth standard fare stadium grub.

I wish the Ralph would lower prices, it's basically a slab of concrete with stands slapped in it at this point, no reason I should pay $11 for a beer.
