Overwatch porn is being forced offline by DMCA takedown notices

Isn't porn covered by fair use? How else would companies get away with stuff like the Big Lewbowski parody and Pirates?

Can't have anyone's eyes sullied, Blizzard knows what i should be looking at.

Next expect NSFW fanarts to be mysteriously deleted as well

I'm not going to lie, Overwatch porn has done far more to make me want to buy the game than the actual marketing. Though Mei turning out to have the least revealing outfit of the female cast did kind of put a dampener on that.

Honestly though, porn is great and Blizzard are being silly for trying to curb it. Just pretend it doesn't happen and enjoy the soiled, slightly sticky money it unintentional brings in.

While those are parodies, this is straight up ripping out the characters into source filmmaker and adding a few... accoutrements.

On one hand I believe that porn remakes of other intellectual properties are considered parody and are absolutely legal under fair use.

On the other hand, if, these clips are using official Blizzard models from Overwatch and are then imported into Source Film Maker, then Blizzard absolutely are legally allowed and indeed have the right to issue DMCA take down requests.

If the parody clips are entirely of a users own creation, (i.e designed, modeled, animated by creator) that they are essentially fan art and Blizzard would be in the wrong to take them down.

I understand protecting your IP, but man, this is barely going to make a dent with how much is out there.

Porn finds a way.

There's alternative video sites, community boards, and hell even torrent files with all this shit available. They'll soon find out it'll be in vain trying to stop porn from surfacing, sure, you'll be able to stop the flow of it on most of the big sites, but the people who'll want their porn will have other options to easily obtain it.

So what's the difference, legally speaking?

Overwatch SFM porn probably wouldn't be considered "transformative" enough to be fully protected under fair-use, as it's 95% the same models and characters from the game. Porn parodies usually get away with it by having original stories (though probably lacking vastly in quality), sets, and sometimes characters.

This isn't to say all porno parodies fall under the lines of fair-use, but a lot of times the company holders of the IP's just don't bother going after them for one reason or another.

Phew. Frankly, I was worried that I was going to be sullied by pornography. Thankfully, Blizzard knows how the internet works and it will be taken down. All of it! In all seriousness, though - I'm surprised Blizzard is even bothering with this (if it is indeed them). I legitimately have a few friends who got into Overwatch via the pornography. You'd think they'd pass a blind eye, considering how they don't give a fuck about rule34 of their other properties.

Just like how it worked for Ken Levine when he asked people to stop making Elizabeth porn.
