Is E3 becoming pointless?

Not really. Its still Video game Christmas.

Its all about the hype of that time. Thats why so many announcements before around E3 are happening.

During Christmas you actually get things. E3 is also a time where few games actually come out. It's a fall preview. It's like getting a preorder catalog.

For consumers it's pretty pointless. For the industry at large it still has value because it gets everyone in one place to detail what's coming up for the upcoming year.

I don't think so, we just had a great E3 last year, but it seems people want to keep repeating this idea to themselves until they believe it.

Nope

The Press Conferences are the objective of the event. It's a sign of confidence to the consumers. We are big. Look at us. Consumers like to spend money on brands that have that kind of bravado.

People should just look at it as a marketing show and not a tech show

Stuff ALWAYS leak before almost any show, just like the SF5 leak before PSX and the BB leak before 2014 E3 and countless others, you can't help it.

Still there are always plenty of surprises left so I don't see your point, unless you can write down every possible new game that will be announced and revealed and have at least 95% accuracy I think we should keep E3.

I wonder how many mods rolled their eyes in unison after seeing this thread. This shit happens every year, there is plenty to get excited about at the conferences. Please be excited

Never. E3 will always remain relevant, for me atleast. It's my Christmas, Eid and every other holiday wrapped into one.

What "big announcements" can we even expect this year though? PS Neo and Xbox Scorpio aren't new news, at best we'd get a confirmation of specs and a glimpse of what they might look like. Is that really such a huge thing?
We already know the NX won't be there unless Nintendo have just been trolling everyone.

I'll be very happy to be wrong, but I certainly don't expect anything 'huge' to happen.

games?

Lest we forget last e3 megatons

Looking through gaming chat today I see thread after thread of pre-E3 announcements and leaks, as if every developer is trying to rush news out to avoid their announcement being buried in the flurry of announcements that come from E3 and it makes me think, what's the point of even having E3 anymore?
If all the big announcements end up coming beforehand anyway then what's the point? You can showcase footage easily without a big event like E3 and doing it via YouTube from your studio would probably be way cheaper. Pretty much the only thing that it seems E3 can be used for is letting attendees play some early builds, but is that really worth it? Especially considering those are often nothing like the final released build.

So why do we have E3 anymore anyway? I just dont see the point now.

Not all the big announcements have come before hand, we get people saying this every year. If there was no point to e3 it would not garner so much attention and focus

In the sense that companies are participating in less ritualistic ways, you can no longer have hard expectations about who will be where and in what capacity, even the big folks.

Oh right,I see what you mean in that sense. To me that only seems to be Nintendo generally, pretty much everyone else shows up,but that could change over time

I think it used to have a point. It's confused about its own identity these days as to who it's aimed at, but it's best not to overthink it and just take it as you see it.

It's becoming pointless.

Why spend loads on marketing, demos, booths, etc only to share the spotlight with tons of other games.

I don't think E3 offers the visibilty it once used to. In this day in age we have social media and word of mouth gets around quick.

The Battlefield 1 reveal on Youtube has over 37 million views. Would it really have been better if EA saved the reveal for E3?

Nintendo has the right idea with their directs. In fact, the major publishers should just do their thing in their own time and space.

I'm always in for the cringe and massive disappointments, the tears, the frustration, the WTF's, the 100 posts every 10 seconds during some of the megatons being dropped. And best of all, the gifs.

It's all good fun.

It makes sense...cos when they announce the Final Fantasy VI Remake at E3 the splash is gonna be even bigger than VII.

Every year is the same. It's like Christmas, kids know one of their gifts is a transformer but they aren't too sure about the what's in the others.

For me, yes, it is irrelevant, because i live in a foreign country

Everything they show means nothing since it's just trailers and announcements for games and consoles that will take 1 - 2 years to be released.. sometimes 3 years or more
The hype is there, but that's it, it vanishes as soon as the event is over

I do understand why it is such a big deal for those who attend the event (gamers), bur for someone who can only watch it on YouTube after work hours... meh.. nothing special.

As for companies, I can see a decrease in participants, but it's mostly because every company is finding new ways to let the customer know about new developments (nintendo direct, or major nelson's blog, d23, for example) and projects in a less messy way.

EDIT. forgot to include that everything leaks these days, the excitement is gone, so it's kinda pointless to sit and watch a conference with 40% - 50% or even more leaked... people somehow love to not be excited about things

Tons of things leak, before the week there are new trailers and announcements coming out, people have just done their own stream reveals like Battlefield 1 recently, Persona 5 etc.

But its fun watching the conferences, chatting online about the cool megatons, disappointments and the cringes. I just wish more stuff stayed secret so we can be totally surprised more often.

The big pre-E3 conferences are still very much relevant.

However E3 itself (the booths and show floor) i find are less and less important as the years go on.

I find it hard to believe the cost of attending and showcasing on the show floor translates to a significant increase in sales. Now if the event (or even just the demos) were somewhat open to the public... different story.

Good question. I really hope this isn't a sign that E3 will be eliminated. It's an expensive venture for everyone on the publishing side, especially for the largest ones, and with Nintendo barely even having any presence here, I fear that they may bail, and other companies will start following suit.

Remember when this happened back in 2007? Technically the even known as "E3" was still around, but E3 as we all knew it was no more. Of course, it turned out to be such a huge mistake that everyone went back to the old format by the next year and continued to so until today.

I seriously pray they don't try to repeat that.

I love staying home for a day of conferences. It's disappointing that EA moved to Sunday. I enjoy the whole thing for the hype and fan tears alone. As a spectacle it definitely servers a purpose. From a business perspective I'm sure a lot of this stuff could be done for cheaper.

PEGGLE 2!!!.......Nuff said. But seriously it's not pointless. Most gamers aren't on gaming websites looking for reveals year round. Thats what e3, tgs, etc. are all for.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Announcement and a teaser trailer beforehand then gameplay trailer in the show. perfect formula.

LOL...that's not how it worked last year. Way, way too many CGI trailers at the main show.

So many cynical voices in here. I still really enjoy E3 and talking about the reveals. I mean after last year's hype fest with gametrailers, how can you deny that it has worth? People loved the shit out of that video and of other YouTube reactions. This criticism against E3 is just a different version of "why even meet people in real life when you can talk to them online much more efficiently?" scenarios. Efficiency isn't really the point.

I didn't know social media was turned off during E3. I also didn't know social media killed the appeal of an industry gathering and celebration once a year. Did they also cancel comic-con because movie trailers are on Youtube?

Nintendo has the right idea with their directs. In fact, the major publishers should just do their thing in their own time and space.

Yet Nintendo's products are dead in the water, their mindshare is almost completely gone even among their once strongest audiences. Great marketing decision from their side, indeed. The market leader Sony having a hall full of journalists cheering for them and chanting, when the entire industry is watching once a year is obviously pointless. Yeah.
(Sorry to tell you... but it's actually Nintendo becoming pointless. /shamylayahan_twist.jpg )
