Xbox One S has additional CPU/GPU power, games can look and run better

Nah, I thought the same until someone pointed out that all you need is an adapter that they'll apparently give out for free to those that qualify.

There will be an adapter and someone said it's free for existing owners... don't know if this was confirmed anywhere.

Well thank god for that then. My launch day xbox one is a bit battered.

Now I know I can get a free adapter so I can continue to use Kinect I'll bite £250 version.

Note to all really, just buy cheapest version,
pick up external HDD it's so much cheaper that way.

Can't be that big of a spec bump otherwise more would have been made of it.

Unless it's a decent spec bump but they don't want to dilute Scorpio messaging.

Be interesting to see the first DF face-offs on something like Halo 5... see how much of a difference it makes.

Uh-oh. This is getting confusing. Maybe it's a performance bump comparable with Wii switching disc drives from time to time or something. (Original xBoxes apparently had variable RAM latency.) If it's something more noticeable, then why did they do this?

Or they don't wanna piss off OG XB1 owners or the bump isn't big. We don't know anything yet.

So, GeOW 4 went from native 1080p/60 ( Rod said that on Twitter before ) to dynamic res? How is Xbone S more powerful? LOL

Another stupid secret sauce theory.

Ha! I was on the fence but 4K streaming, 4K Blu-ray, HDR/HDR gaming and now this (even if it's a miniscule bump) has pushed me over. I had the same thought, trade for the cheapest version and just transfer my current 5TB external drive.

Well, we will soon see what is stupid. Perhaps even some posts calling it stupid.

They are forced to change the HDMI port to 2.0 with HDCP 2.2 and possibly have HEVC 10-bit hardware decoding to play UHD HDR Blu-ray/Streaming smoothly....

So a little hardware change is required

Same reason why Sony created the Neo, it's cheaper for them. AMD doesn't want to continue producing old chips when they can make new ones run similar to old ones, maintaining compatibility. It's cheaper for AMD, it's cheaper for Microsoft and Sony and extra performance is a nice bonus for customers. I remember in the original Xbox days there was a time when it was actually cheaper for Microsoft to buy 16 GB HDDs and format them to the 8 of earlier revisions than to continue buying 8 GB HDDs.

Huhuh I guess Phil didn't want to get left behind after Major Nelson PR comeback. Someone tweet Phil :p

I wonder why PR is not boasting about this given what NEO is doing or maybe because it's not also powerful they don't want to bring attention to that(ofc officially Sony hasn't said anything about Neo specs just meant in general/future). Also I guess it could also be they don't want to worry XB1 owners about the performance/graphical difference there will be between the two.

Wonder how much of a side-upgrade this is.

The key point i tried to make WAS the price.

Same console, 299$ vs PS4 399$
$299 wasn't remotely possible (even without kinect) in 2013. The current boxes will nearly be three by the time Slim & Neo drop - that's what allows for $299.

I'm not so sure about that, they might have been afraid to alienate existing XBone owners completely because with Scorpio they already showed a more powerful machine.

So they weren't afraid to alienate existing owners by essentially starting a new generation, but we're afraid to alienate existing owners with a little bit of new power in the S?

Ok then.

They don't have to enhance hardware for UHD streaming. 4k streams of Amazon Prime worked flawlessly during the test phase earlier this year, just could not be output to more than 1080p.

Not true if you add HDR....

HDR and UHD Blu-ray require HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 and 10-bit HEVC video decoding @2160p

If this turns out to be a somewhat significant performance increase, then i am so glad that i moved to PC. The target is also moving constantly on PC but i have way more control.

But then if it doesn't turn out to be significant you're not glad?

Its prob just the same parts just smaller with an upclock.

its not got a new gpu and cpu

As others have already said in here (but people seem to be expecting something more) - this sounds exactly like the slight performance gains you get from cpu die shrinking.

Time for console reviewers to step up their game
