Digital Foundry: Spec Analysis: Xbox Project Scorpio

"Removing barriers... Innovation and the latest technology... delivering the world's most powerful console is something we absolutely want to do... the most powerful graphics processor that's been put into a game console... the highest res... the best frame-rate... no compromises... we can render at 60Hz... we can render fully uncompressed quality pixels... the best quality pixels... true 4K gaming..."

The pitch presented at the E3 press conference for Project Scorpio is plain and simple. While some of the claims sound a little bizarre or straight-out laughable (uncompressed pixels?), Microsoft aims to regain control of the technological high ground with its own mid-generation console refresh. What we're looking at here is an ambitious leap-frogging of the PlayStation 4K Neo in technological terms, with Microsoft utilising the top-tier parts available from hardware partner AMD - technology we've yet to see fully revealed in the PC space.

Actual performance figures and hard specs are thin on the ground, but there's enough information here for us to put together a picture on what Scorpio offers and whether it can indeed deliver on the claims made for it.

Interesting read, thanks.

I really hope it's powerful enough to deliver 4k for at least some games, because that would just be awesome. I'd be happy with just 1080p 60fps on most existing Xbox One games though.

Fuck 4K. Let me play at 1080p with super graphics.

Fuckin' eh!

Now there's a fair bit of assumption in there based on that picture

Are we quite sure this isn't just a mock up considering the time to launch?

Sounds like Scorpio's price will tell you exactly how serious MS is about the Xbox brand, given this article paints the parts as costly.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
It's not about power, it's about games. And on that ground I'm still not feeling Microsoft one bit.

You already know the games Scorpio will be getting in the next years ? Cool.

Wow what goes around...

I can see that 30-40 percent is suddenly very important again.

A good portion of PlayStation 4's success has been down to its spec advantage over Xbox One, combined with a focus on the hardcore player. Sony's technological advantage will be gone with the next wave of hardware

Good on MS for doing what they think they need to do. Sadly for them they don't have the games that I want to play.

I would have still bought a PS4 over the Xbox had the power gap been reversed because at the end of the day I go where the games I want to play are. The same reason I will buy Nintendo's new machine.

How long would you like them to wait before posting the article?

OT: all hail Phil Spencer

Well, until there are actually some, you know, actual specifications rather than a bunch of performance numbers and a non-existent box.

It's also unfeasible for Sony to produce a radically revised Neo - the silicon has been designed, developer kits have gone out. Matching Scorpio would require scrapping Neo's existing processor completely.

figured as much

This is very much my feelings on it as well. Just seems like a waste of resources IMO, the current consoles can barely hit 1080p, feel like all the performance 'gains' are just going to be spent hitting another barely achievable resolution rather than improving the games themselves.

And this is interesting to some? At least It's not like that clickbait violence in games at e3 verge thread

It's all clickbait no matter what. They say that details are thin on the ground yet proceed to do a "spec analysis" containing nothing but speculation.

I'm will be at the front of the queue for info...

This thread wasn't tilted: "why Sony is fkd"

I like this. And graphics aren't best part either, it's their commitment to compatibility.

Sony's spec advantage will go away in 18 months from today.

And return in 12 months past that.

And disappear 12 months after that.

And return in 12 months past that.

Then disappear again.

Then return again.

Whats your real issue here ?

This comes back to same old Xbox One launch. Vague details about a box 1.5 years down the line. There are so many factors involved its not just about 6tf and this just feels like they are trying to pull the wool over you eyes.

But until more info comes out its hard to tell as they really have to have a full plan in place not just a lets make bigger hardware than the competitor as that is not what I buy a console for.

For people who don't understand teraflops and GB/s it's useful that they put it in to a real world context.

Assuming DF was right about the 480 being used in PS4 neo, the clock rate can probably be bumped up to normal speeds if Sony wanted to do it. It's be 5.5 TF vs Scorpios 6TF. theyd have to ship out new dev kits for devs who wanted to use the extra juice but itd mitigate the gap quite a bit.

My TV feels dirty from having to put up with compressed peasant pixels from my PC, PS4 and especially the Xbox One.

Save me Scorpio.

It's actually a very nicely written and interesting article including also some details/speculations not directly obvious from Microsoft's presentation. Of course, you might not be interested in such details specific to DF, but then it begs the question what are you even doing in this thread beside making a very bad first post?

This is what I've been saying too, some people don't seem to grasp that idea and focus on Scorpio being the one, nothing more from Sony after the Neo. Neither console will ever be the most powerful for long.

It will always come back to the games you like on a particular console.

The system that comes out in a year and a half will be more powerful than the existing ones! I bet new systems in 2018 will be even more powerful!

Scorpio could use a technique called

ADVANCED PIXEL DECONTAMINATING SUBSURFACE CLEANSING PATTERN

covered by DX Scorpio, the Scorpio exclusive API.

6 tf is the total of the system, including CPU.

It is not a 6TF GPU plus CPU, this is an important fact and is being ignored in the assumption of the spec by many.

If the PS4 Neo (which was reported to be subject to change by DF) is 4.4tf in the GPU plus whatever rating the CPU is, then difference might not be much at all.

I expect Neo spec to change like the PS4 did at a later stage, MS played all their cards, Sony can change the spec (like the rumoured by DF CPU upgrade).

Let's wait and see if the 30-40% does appear.

Also price (same as what hindered the PS3) and by PR is what killed the X1, not spec, as that was just an additional kick in the balls.

Exactly and to gain more customers they need to keep bringing quality games. It's a win for customers too.

They made the clock speed as high as it´s possible without generating too much heat (& noise).

If they could just increase it, they would have been stupid not to do it in the first place....

I doubt there is anything they can change apart from a small percentage which changes nothing.

i'm praying neo changes the cpu to zen and gets delayed to 2017. i want to play everything at 60fps.

I love hearing what digital foundry speculates.

800-850MHz with 3584-3840 cores sounds plausible.
I was wondering if Microsoft were going to go for a lower core count and higher clock-speed but that could probably consume more power.

Even Xbox One size case can't bump 300mhz clock speed senpai.

By the time this comes out PC graphics cards will have at least 12 TFlops.

Still an exciting announcement. Games will look incredible.
