Calamity Ganon, also the trailer they showed before we saw the demo was different too. I don't think they've released it to the public yet, there was some footage there that we got to see.

For weapons you can press left of the D-pad and then use the right stick to switch. And then in the menu after you press start you can use the right analog stick to switch between whole menus. And everything is so far apart that it's not a big hassle. Although I didn't start a fire and make food during my playtime, I was just exploring the world.
Thank you! How awesome was it, right? It took everything in my power not to throw a tantrum when they said my demo was over.

I loved every single bit of the 5 hour presentation in the treehouse show. I really wanted to be at E3 to play the 20 minute demo and enjoy how well crafted the game looks.

I Just can't wait for 2017 and get a NX and this game (or even buy the game for Wii U) but the hype is huge thanks of everything shown.

How does the shield work? Does it get taken out automatically when L Targeting or do you have to press a button to use it?

It got brought out in front of me when I Z-Targeted. And it is optional to be equipped. It can be used if you're using a light weight item (5 weight) or by itself. But if you use a 10 weight item like an axe or a big sword no shield can be brought out.

There's also this thing you can do that the Nintendo rep told me that if you're on a slope and hold ZL and press X+A you will shield slide down the slope

My demo ended right when I clicked on the Sheikah stone in the temple/shrine thing that was made as a trial in the honor of Hylia

I looked around it first to see the walls and area and as soon as I clicked the "Thanks for playing" popped up and I was like D:

I saw the GameXplain gameplay of the E3 demo and while there are towers they don't end up filling out the map with icons and markers - they just make the map of the zone visible, if you know what I mean? Like, it's not an empty space with borders anymore, but an actual map of the zone.

The icons and markers are up to the player, mostly :)

That's awesome! Ok, happy to be wrong. I had heard it described by the 8-4 guys on giant bomb differently. they compared it to assassin's creed, etc.

BTW, is Z targeting in the game? From all the gameplay footage, I didn't notice anyone use Z target. I always love Z target in Zelda.

Ye Z-targeting is still in, but camera isn't fixed. So like it will Z-target the enemy but you can still change camera angle right after freely.

SHIELDBOARDING

OH SHIT

Didn't get to do this rep just told me about it, but glad they got one of the best aspects from Twilight and put it in the game

What would you say is Dark Soul influenced?

Some of the stuff that stood out to me:

-The intro. You wake up in a mysterious cave, alone. After a couple of lines of dialogue, you're free to explore and figure out exactly where you are. Bye bye traditional, tutorial filled 3D Zelda intro.

-The world itself seems desolate. Bleak, even with all the colors and living wildlife. This wasn't something I was expecting, but I definitely got Dark Souls vibes when I first saw that overworld. It was only compounded by...

-The lack of music! Or use of minimal music. I was totally expecting an orchestrated Zelda theme to start playing as Link entered that field. Instead... nothing. Very much like Dark Souls.

-As you begin exploring this world, you meet a mysterious NPC character. He is one of, if not the only NPC we meet in this demo. Dark Souls isn't exactly filled to the brim with jolly NPCs either.

-It looks like you will be collecting tons of different pieces of clothing that increase your defense. Same with sword items of various strength. Like Dark Souls, this will lead to a stronger desire to explore every nook and cranny in the world to find every last item, because you know it will likely be worth it in the end. The days of finding chests with 50 rupees in it seem to be over.

And that's just off the top of my head from watching a bunch of the footage on and off throughout the day.

OF COURSE, none of that stuff is exclusive to Dark Souls. But when I go around saying "I wish Zelda would take notes from Dark Souls", stuff like the above is EXACTLY what I meant. When I played through Dark Souls the first time, there were so many things that stood out to me and made me think "You know, I wish Zelda did something like that."

Zelda U seems to be answering some of those prayers.

Btw for the people saying desolate even in the demo which I am assuming is heavily neutered had a lot of enemies and the first demo even had an optional mini boss that my cousin got to fight since he was messing around in the forest the whole time.

All he did was throw a bomb at a boulder and then it turned into the rock monster you see in the trailer, and it has weak points on its but if you damage any part of it it affects the way the monster moves. So like if you hit its legs it will limp (or at least I'm assuming based on what he told me)

Also I found a Rupee so Rupees are still in the game lmao. My rep told me no one found a rupee so I was like ayyyy

My only complaint was lack of NPCs and towns but apparently that won't be an issue so I'm not too worried.
Still want VA for all characters :/

So basically you won't be stuck using a Kokiri Sword half a game till you get the master sword, but be picking up all arrays of different weapons?

Ye, but a lot of stuff are weapons like branches and shit the moblins are holding. So I'm guessing it will be kinda hard to be completely weaponless in the game.

Awesome recap. Hearing it won't have a big story is huge minus for me. I want it. And I want it brilliantly told but I know that's not possible in a gigantic overworld with so many moving parts and this amount of player agency.

But some Zelda fans have been wanting this game for a very long time and this might be their last chance at getting this kind of game considering how long it takes to make a Zelda. I won't bitch and moan about no story. I already have my perfect Zelda so I want the old school fans to have theirs.

I can't wait to finally play this. It's going to be an incredible experience.

This is actually really exciting. If the Zelda games of recent years have been heavily praised I wonder what kind of reaction a Zelda with genuine effort and ambition behind it will produce...?

The Treehouse stream made it look like this was a one-handed weapon vs two-handed weapon thing. Did you encounter an actual weight system?

Hah, where did you find it? First I've heard of anyone finding an actual Rupee instead of just seeing the counter or them being listed in descriptions.

Puzzles weren't a huge feature of the original two Zelda games; combat was. For all the hype about this game being a return to the feeling of the original LoZ, the enemies showed in the demo were few and far between. And while there were some genuinely tough enemies, they were easy to avoid and easy to survive thanks to the game's abundance of health restoring food items.

Yea the original Zelda is a little bit different animal than what we're seeing here. That game was pretty fast paced with some intense action in the overworld.

Zelda Wii U has the same go anywhere approach, but that element is joined to a very different gameplay mix and of course a far, far bigger world.

Sometimes you may not have known where to go in the original Zelda but in any direction you went you'd find some immediate gameplay with aggressive enemies. Moment to moment, this new game looks like it will have a different feel.

Totally my thoughts as well. I've always wanted Zelda to take certain cues from Souls without going too far off the nihilistic deep end. Saving the soundtrack for key moments is a really smart choice if so much of this game is about taking in your surroundings.

This is going to be the MGSV of the series. You'll have a very vocal segment of people disappointed and bringing its reputation down. I guess you can say that about every other Zelda, but this one will be the most divisive entry yet because it's the kind of game that Zelda hasn't been in a very very long time. Most fans have probably never played the first two Zeldas.

Hah, where did you find it? First I've heard of anyone finding an actual Rupee instead of just seeing the counter or them being listed in descriptions.

The menu had 5/10s in it so I assumed it was weight, maybe that's the resell cost for it? Idk because when I equipped the big stone sword or whatever it was called it notified me that it was a two handed item like you said, but it had a 10 next to it. I remembered it by weight and not by whether it was one or two handed.

Plus the shield and the smaller sword had 5's next to them so I guessed it was all weight based.

And it was in the 15 min demo where I found it, I was going downhill towards a small stream of water and when I went backwards after a small drop off the notification for pick up popped up and I picked up a 5 rupee, notification box was pretty small for it. Also there are bugs you can pick up while you cut the grass, dunno if treehouse went over it. The bugs need to be picked up ASAP like if you take one step without pressing A, they're gone.

Idk what their use will be.

XCX's open world doesn't have much in the way of interaction. It's like every other open world game out there.

Zelda's is very different. This game doesn't even have a tutorial.

XCX isnt even like the average open world, the game isnt built upon elements like real time action rpg based gameplay, so you arent exactly suppose to be given tools that you could potentially use out of fights, but it still encourages exploration with different methods, its not suppose to be like zelda, or witcher, or the elder scrolls series, the open world does exactly what its suppose to do without people thinking that it "needs more" or that it's "barren"

Most of that stuff screamed Zelda 1 to me honestly, Dark Souls never really entered my mind when watching any of the footage. After watching 5 minutes of it I thought to myself, "oh this would be like if they made Zelda 1 today with some modern gameplay mechanics".

I guess when I think of Dark Souls the stand out parts to me is the slower, more deliberate combat, and the memorization of these very deliberately designed levels. I guess you could say "deliberate" is what I think of when I think of Dark Souls and nothing in this was very deliberate. If anything, a little bit made me think of Dragon's Dogma, but I think it had to do a little bit with how you control Link.

So did anyone in the entirety of gaming journalism ask them why this uses tessellation but not AF?

So basically you won't be stuck using a Kokiri Sword half a game till you get the master sword, but be picking up all arrays of different weapons?
More or less. But even beyond that, the "melee weapons" you pick up can also be tools as well. Wooden weapons like a tree branch and a wooden club can be lit on fire, and there are also torches that can be used as weapons that specialize in this. We've also seen a large leaf that can be swung to shoot gusts of wind and a fire rod that can be swung to start fires (but will break if you strike something with the rod itself).

I was thinking this. The last two were big emphasis on narrative with the name of the game taken out of character in one way or the other, while things are pointing towards this one being about the world map. Unless they really are hiding this big narrative element for later.

I wonder if it will be possible to do a no sword run, people are already planning to do a naked run

I think that's acceptable because this game doesn't really have that much narrative baggage as MGSV did, which had to close and failed to close out the Metal Gear Saga.

Zelda:BoTW is a story about exploration and survival and engaging with the forces of natures in weather, sounds and sights, touch and taste and eventually overcoming those forces to rise against an Unfathomable one. The gameplay is the story as much as if not more so than the narrative.

If I could trade the existence of every other game shown at E3 for the ability to play this game completely now I would.

Your evil, Zelda looks amazing, but not that good.

The Wii U got a killer app when it was all said and done. (Aside from Smash U and Bayo 2 ahem)

This game will shine on NX, and I hope the same intuitive studious game design that was applied to Zelda was also applied to the NX and Nintendo's console philosophy.

The difference being that Nintendo is actually going to finish this game.

They were VERY explicit, again and again in the stream by Aonuma and Miyamoto, that those elements you bolded as well as others are all directly inspired by Zelda 1.

Even the Japanese title is a reference to Zelda 1

Ohh i agree with the interaction point here. Xeno X does not had many things to interact in the world which is what i would love to see them improve on the upcoming Xeno.^_^

But, i don't agree that it is like every other open world game here. I feel Xeno X is actually really rewarding people who goes to explore/adventure all over the world. It also hidden lots of artifact and vistas all over the world. The way it plays with vertical of the world also feels really fresh as it is not often we see a world which is designed thoroughly to accommodate with the size of a mech.

Zelda here seems to not play so much on total exploration but how to survive in this one gigantic new world which you had no idea what is the world is.

I can't wait for this game here.^_^

Im liking what I saw, but I'm kind of worried of the micromanaging. Seems like you're breaking up the flow by being in menus and inventory constantly since there's no more hearts in the world to replenish health.

Do not worry about this because you will be able to cook ingredients you loot that will replenish your health and even boost it temporaly.
