Indie Games 2016 [June] Lets play some Indies!

Wow, I have no idea what just happened to Ghost 1.0... Towards the end, you just walk into a normal room, suspecting nothing, cutscene plays and then suddenly you're a different character on a different mission in this horrendous trial and error section that's waaaay too long, has too many pasted rooms with repeated tasks, horrendously placed save points that force you to replay tedious bits over and over and over...

I would still recommend the game and the rest of it has been pretty great, but I'm awestruck by just how utterly terrible this section was in comparison to how good everything else is.

I haven't got to that bit yet, but from your description I 'look forward' to it. I was too much of a fake badass with Ghost. I put the difficulty on hard thinking I could handle it but I got stuck at the first boss for so long I decided to downgrade it to medium and now I have to bring myself to play through the first two hours again. Although I finished Salt and Sanctuary yesterday so perhaps now is time for a new 2d game.

I'm surprised Sony didn't do an indie reel/showcase. Even EA was touting its move into that space.

I kept waiting and it never came... There was like half a second of Thumper and Aragami in the closing supercut.

Fe from Zoink did look like an interesting departure for the studio. Hell, EA's indie from last year, Unravel, was my best of show. Who would have thought they'd ever be pushing indies?

Another day, another indie dev horror story.

This time it is the team behind Brigador.

O_O

As an added bonus, the stress of that situation 5 years on, plus shipping the game has reduced me from a guy who boxed in college* to a 30lb heavier idiot who had to see a doctor for what I discovered were panic attacks (new horizons!). Also following bloodwork being done, the doctor was perplexed by how low my Vitamin D levels were until I explained to him that I literally never go outside anymore. He also asked if I had a stressful job, so I laughed.

Does anyone know how easy it is to find a multiplayer game for Offworld trading company? It looks quite interesting and i'm thinking of getting it in the Steam sale if it's the right price, but i'm not sure how much much of a playerbase it has.

According to SteamSpy, there have been roughly 8k players in the past 2 weeks.

Owners: 123,851 ± 8,668
Players in the last 2 weeks: 7,949 ± 2,196 (6.42%)
Players total: 115,902 ± 8,385 (93.58%)

* cross posting from Steam thread. It's one weird indie game. *

I requested a review code for this game:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/463110/

It lists these features:

-Point-and-click adventure games?
-Simple yet honest "old school" 216-color graphics?
-An 800x600 windowed resolution?
-The ability to go full screen with either stretched or un-stretched pixels?
-A single EXE file that's less than 5 MB?
-Lots and lots and LOTS of reading?
-A unique response for every single possible interaction?
-Lizard girls?

The 216-color graphics bullet point is bogus. Let's just say that was the same amount of colors available on EGA.

Here is an old game done in EGA:

And here is Farnham Fables:

So having said that, the game is only 99c and there are some interesting things going on.

First and foremost is this weird merging of old-school CRPG movement, with a VN visual style and PnC adventure game verbs and inventory system. Initially the presentation was a little underwhelming when I first played but the design of the system grew on me as it's pretty intuitive.

The other noteworthy thing is that later on in the game you have a party of three people who each have their own inventory and also their own special *verb*. Basically you got your medic/mage/warrior.

Also also, each character interacts with everything differently. There is a lot of neat ideas in the game but then I accidentally beat the game in 24 minutes when I was doing my Quick Look.

So my Quick Look transformed into a Play Through.

Also there are Lizard titties in the game.

Here's my Quick Look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWg_nzJJvPY

I have mixed feelings on this game. Mechanically there are some really interesting things going on under the hood. But it all goes to hell with some really bad writing and subpar MS paint skills. Also what's up with the Lizard titties? Also what's up with the Lizard people at all?

This game raises too many questions.

Finally got a PS4, and been enjoying having my butt kicked by N++

I know of Resogun and Alienation, any other PS4-exclusive indies?

Amazing discoveries in Outer Space
Basement Crawl
The Castle Game
Fat Princess Adventures
The Tomorrow Children

Edit: The Tomorrow Children is the only one I am looking forward too. I'm not sure about the others.

Just read some reviews of Amazing Discoveries In Outer Space, sounds awesome

Not true exclusives since some are on Steam, Vita, and PS3, but worth mentioning: Velocity 2X, Galak-Z, and Hohokum.

Browsing your steam list it looks like you've dabbled in V2X and G-Z. Still, stellar recommendations for anyone else looking.

Velocity 2X is killer and a challenging platinum. The developer FuturLab has their hooks in me deep.

Hohokum is very nebulous and artsy, but worth a look on style alone. I hyped the hell out of it, was slightly disappointed since it was so odd, but am glad it exists and glad I played it.

I'm normally not a fan of roguelikes, but Galak-Z is fun, though I abandoned it due to its difficulty curve in later stages.

Steam Summer Sale starts this week. You guys have your eyes set on any games in particular?

I'm most interested in Fear Equation, Big Pharma, and Aurion

I'm not really looking for anything this sale. The games I want won't drop much (Hyper Light, Salt & Sanctuary, Velocity 2X), so I'll just keep my eyes open for things I don't have on my radar.

Maybe this'll be the sale where Environmental Station Alpha finally gets a decent discount.

My wishlist is pretty long, but I think I'm adding stuff out of curiosity rather than desire:

Ghost 1.0
Devil Daggers
House of the Dying Sun
Vagante

Most won't drop much if at all, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for any gems along the way as well.

Due to its extremely poor tutorial, I had left Dungeon of the endless almost untouched...until now. I'm officially in love with it, such an amazing game!

Edit: oh! After something like 3 years I'm finally a full neogaf member!

Yo guys, Wizard of Legend is so good even though they only have a small demo of it.

I did a quick video of it here if you want to just scrub through it real quick, the last two minutes are the juicy bits:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvFd32xWhAc

Alternatively, here is the link to download the demo and try it for yourself: http://bit.ly/28MeLjz

I do recommend giving the demo a quick go, it'll only be 10 minutes but it should immediately sell you on how well the game mechanics work.

It's so good. To the degree that you'll be pulling off what you see in the .gifs very quickly.

So satisfying.

Hey guys, developer of Badass Hero here. We've just added some GIFs to our website, here's the coolest one IMO:

We have more on our website badasshero.com or you can just watch our reveal trailer on YouTube.

Let me know if you find the game interesting or you have any questions about it!

It's been a while since I popped in here to chat, but we're working on a couple of new games. This one's ready to talk about some, so without further adieu, here's Brusin' Cruisers.

^_^ Full video footage can be found here ^_^

Bruisin' Cruisers is our take on the 2D top-down car combat genre. We're big fans of Bump'n Jump and we wanted to pay it tribute, but we also wanted to emphasize the combat aspect of the game as well, so you won't be able to just jump around whenever you want. Progression is level based and there's a story involved. In between levels there's a shop where you'll be able to buy upgrades and other cars with unique abilities.

We originally started this for a game jam but we never actually finished it for that. We liked the project enough to put it on the short list of things to eventually come back to. Originally the game was held to the Game Boy resolution and color limitations, but we decided to expand the resolution, as it was a bit limiting for our vision. The color limitation is still in effect (4 colors at any one time) but different levels will have different color schemes.

It's being built in Unity and we don't really have any release plans to talk about just yet. I'd guess that it will see release in 2017, and at least on Steam, but that's purely a guess at this point. If anyone has any questions please ask!

I finally caved and bought Obliteracers (formerly Space Dust Racers) and boy I'm glad I did.

It has the intensity of Micro Machines (which isn't something I throw around lightly) with some nice features from Mario Kart in there as well. Probably the best top down racer I've played in a decade. I would give this a look during the Steam sale.

And there are tons of great summer indies in the pipeline.

Looks awesome! Thanks for the update. I love my NES version of Bump 'n Jump. When you say combat, will this have projectile weapons, etc.?

We're toying with the idea of projectiles for an unlockable car, but they won't be the norm. The running line when showing it off to people is "It's like Bump'n Jump with more bumping and less jumping". We're trying to emphasize maneuvering into and around your enemies. Using the environment to your advantage. Bouncing into them, crashing them into walls and obstacles or off the road, that kind of stuff.

War for the Overworld has a low metacritic score and i remember there being a few problems with it early on. Does anyone know what sort of state it's in now? Is it worth getting? The Steam Summer sale starts tomorrow so I'm considering buying it.

Haha, bumping > jumping sounds like a fine blue print. Looking forward to more updates, thanks!

Edit: I really like the plan with the Super Game Boy-ish color palette approach.

I hope this isn't too uncouth, but my team and I (four people total, working in my basement) recently released our first game - Give Me Fuel - https://itunes.apple.com/app/apple-store/id944089927?pt=96135118&ct=GAF&mt=8 - it's a F2P card-battle game on iOS. Wait! Before you see F2P and run away screaming, the only thing you can buy with real money of any significance is to remove ads & double the free currency you get. Anything else in the game, you get enough free currency you'll never have to buy anything unless you play an absolutely *exorbitant* number of simultaneous games.

I know that's a weird way to start, but I know GAF's usually super not into F2P, and we're super sensitive to that as devs, so I wanted to put that up front.

Give Me Fuel is an asynchronous card-battle game. Think Hearthstone when you only have time for Words With Friends. The goal was to make something w/ actual strategy you could pick up & play for a few minutes & make progress in.

We're *very* early in the game's development, which is weird to say because it's live on iOS already, but our whole process is to release early & continually iterate. We've been adding tons of new stuff over the last two months, and have one of our biggest updates so far coming later this week. It's not polished & perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm posting here specifically because we'd love to get some feedback from *experienced gamers*. So if you can give it a shot (seriously, it won't cost you anything!) and let us know what you think we'd really appreciate it!

Thanks!

Not my type of game but good luck anyways!

Ghost 1.0 50% off, maybe a price mistake since it JUST came out last week. its the new metroidvania from the maker of UnEpic, which was great.

Ghost 1.0 is -50% already. This is an amazing deal. I clocked 21 hours on the version I paid full price.

I was thinking that'll have to be a mistake, right?

I don't know if I should buy it just in case it is, I'd rather support them at a price they want.

Unless that was the plan!

I have stumbled upon Haven Moon in my Steam discovery list. It is a Myst-like game made with Unity by a French developer and the trailer looks gorgeous. With some fitting music.

Haven Moon - July 8, 2016 (PC, Mac, Linux)
xrlIugI.jpg

https://haven-moon.com/
http://store.steampowered.com/app/493720

You are teleported to Seleos, the moon of the planet Menra. In front of you, a metal box opens, and inside, you find a note from Ektor Turren, the only survivor of a cataclysmic event that destroyed his world. In his note, he explains that he wishes to leave you the treasure that he accumulated during his whole life. From that, you’ll have to explore the islands on Seleos to discover who was Ektor Turren, what happened to him and to his world, where to find the treasure and go back home with it…

The gameplay is mouse-only by default:
The game has been made to be accessible to any kind of player. The interface and controls have been carefully designed to be as simple and intuitive as possible featuring a unique mouse-only game-play : the entire game is controlled using the mouse. Move it to look around, left click to move forward and interact, and right click to move backwards. That’s it!

(For those who prefer WASD style controls, it’s still possible to configure keyboard keys in the input menu but this is against the design of the experience).

Been playing a lot of console this month, mostly larger games, but I did finally get Resogun (which is awesome)

Picked up The Next Penelope on Steam, as well as the AC Chronicles Trilogy and Quake 1.

So not many indies this month, but next month is Inside, Necropolis, Furi, Obduction, Death Road to Canada...
