So uhhh Aonuma just admitted Wii U GamePad disrupts gameplay...

It was great for giving us Nintendoland, Pikmin and other games that made really cool use of it so I'm happy it existed. Thing is, it was hamfisted into too many games. If its use is not going to be relevant in your game then indeed it might instead just disrupt gameplay.

Serious question, which single player NL game made you think of cool usage of the GamePad?

btw I thought off tv play wasn't as great of an idea as it was on paper. When you go to sit on the couch you don't want to play a game on the tiny screen. It was a decent screen but still no match for the quality of a decent hdtv. Plus the 3ds was for off tv play as was everyone's the mobile devices. I think that was the biggest swing and miss with the gamepad.

You had to have the geographical layout for it, but it made playing Wii U games before going to sleep without having a bright TV on a possibility.

My dirty mind at the moment is seeing something else.

The success of others absolutely infuriates me.
Only good thing about the gamepad was the second screen streaming. Make it something you buy for the NX.

Hmmm... that gives me ideas for that next portable could be.

Anyway, I can't believe the thing is such a failure that Aonuma is allowed to disparage it.

I really do wonder who was the driving force behind the Wii U Gamepad. No one has gone out and made claim to inventing it.

According to Miyamoto in Iwata Asks, it started as a screen on the console itself so that you could see the WiiConnect24's update messages without turning on the TV. Yes, something that utterly unnecessary and impractical was seriously how it started.

They decided to move it to the controller to extend its use to gameplay, and from there it kept getting enlarged to suit more gameplay possibilities. It was basically a really dumb idea that snowballed out of control, and I imagine they went with it because it checked all the boxes. It gave them that differentiating gimmick that would help them stand out, but without disrupting the normal dual analog controls hardcore gamers kept whining for.

Seeing how it wasn't until 2014 that Miyamoto finally committed to making gamepad centric games, they obviously didn't have many software ideas for how to actually use the pad while they were developing it. They had to bend and find contrived uses the pad, putting the tech ahead of the games... which is why it's pretty nice to hear a prominent Nitnendo developer willfully ignoring the pad and putting his game back on top as the first priority.

Unlike the ds/3ds were the screens are close, here it was super distracting for me so I agree. Thank god they have realized that too

This is how I felt about it. The gamepad was a mistake. The Wii U is the first Nintendo console I skipped along with it's stablemate the 3ds. Nintendo seemed to be getting a little eclectic for my tastes.
That's a shame. The Wii U had and maybe still has the best library of exclusives in this generation. Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, The Wonderful 101, Bayonetta 2, Pikmin 3, Smash 4, Mario Kart 8... I'm omitting Splatoon only because I haven't played it.

The gamepad is hardly as obtrusive as you might expect. And off-TV play is a godsend.

Gotta agree with him as I was never a fan of the GamePad, but I think you could use really bigass icons on it so you don't really have to look down on it before selecting said icons. A quick access inventory if you may, where you select some items that will show in the GamePad and you can equip on the fly: Up, Down, Left and Right.

It took only 5 years for someone to say it but finally. I use to hate all the excuses some people made for the gamepad when it's so uneccessary. The gamepad broke immersion and if anything, it was a better map guide than the functionality that it was built for. The Wii U was the console version of the 3DS and it didn't work well enough for me to care about it. Yeah, it was cool on launch but that novelty fell off really quick after so much use.

The Wii U is actually Nintendo's best console since the SNES.

If you are someone for whom the 2D side-scrolling platformer is a priority genre, this should be uncontested.

The case against the Wii U revolves around breadth, not quality. I love it, but there is no end of interests well served by the GameCube and Wii that went neglected this generation.

Wait. So people don't hold the gamepad controller kinda outstretched in front of them so they can see both screens at the same time?

I much prefer having the map and stuff on a separate screen.
Especially with it showing live updates to ink placement and team positions and whatnot.
Yes, that can be shown on the tv. But that would just be a waste of space that could possibly be a blind spot for you.

which is why nearly every competitive shooter that displays a map on screen has transparency settings. That problem was solved years ago.

Couldn't disagree more.

I couldn't disagree with your disagreement more. It would be nice if you expanded on why you feel that way though....

I feel that the Wii u has the 'funnist' games of the generation, off tv play is awesome. I'm glad there is splatoon, Mario maker, woolly world and Mario 3d world as well as many others. Best Nintendo console for some time (I also loved Wii and gamecube)

It lags and has image softening due to scaling that can't be turned off, even with the analog (component) output. CRT with a real GameCube or Wii wins.

For 240p.

Edit: or scaling of any sort. Just run GC games at 480p. Aside from Ikaruga, DDR, and competitive Smash, I can't think of any games that will require lightning response time from the HDTVs that most people own.

I always thought the primary use of the gamepad was to ensure people could sit together and share activities.

It was the way to combat the fact people bought wiis and didn't play them as they're sharing the communal TV, gamepad was to alleviate that?

Love the tears of journalists though

The Wii U is on its way out with a nice swan song. I don't see the issue with that comment.

It's on NX. So no this is shitting on the Wii U as it's dying at this point.

Nobody is gonna look back fondly "damn that Zelda was great", everybody will consider it the NX Zelda.

Nobody considers Twilight princess to be the gamecube's swan song.

He's not wrong when referencing fact paced gameplay and heavy gamepad implementation, but this doesn't mean two screens gameplay is entierely wrong.

Inventory management for example still is far better when having a touch screen.

I hope they step back with a tiny touch screen for the next controller. Do off-TV (the best gamepad feature) with the handheld.

And I can tell you, it feels like I need to get one but damn that gamepad is seriously off-putting. There's a sort of frustration with wanting a normal controller version and not being able to get it.

I've even tried to look at it from the off-tv angle and I like little novelties like that but i just.... ugh. I'll get one eventually. Zelda looks was the only thing that looked as good as horizon to me. Maybe better.

But seriously, ever nintendo system twice over including all the handhelds (which I never used much but always wanted to), and I swear it's that gamepad that pushed me away.

Someone at Nintendo actually admitting having to keep looking back and forth between the TV and your lap is a shitty way to play games?

Guys a legend, and this is the first thing anyone from the company has said that gives me any hope for the NX not being similarly hobbled by the same terrible gimmick.

The tea tray of doom ruined several games on the system for me, and was the main reason I eventually got sick of otherwise charming titled like Captain Toad enough to sell them. Fuck the Gamepad and everyone that signed off on such an awful gimmick.

I can tell you that some of those games work great with the Pro Controller. You don't even have to touch the gamepad.

Cuz fucking nintendo wont give me a bath without a fucking baby in it. So I just take a shower.

Wait is the gamepad the baby, because I don't want one.
Are you interested in Bayonetta 2, The Wonderful 101, Mario Kart, or Smash 4? Because in those the gamepad is strictly optional (unless I'm forgetting some sequences in W101). It's seriously not a big deal. I've never felt like I was forced to use the gamepad when I didn't want to.

I have some resentment against nintendo. I think it started with the cut scenes in mario sunshine. And when twilight princess wasn't that good I just sort of turned inwards....

With the rumours that the NX will have ports of Splatoon and Mario Maker, it seems all but confirmed that the NX won't have a second screen in the gamepad. Likely that they will get retooled to have the second screen functionality be another menu you can quickly switch to or something, similar to how the PC, Xbox One and PS4 'ports' of ZombiU work.

Pretty brave of him to admit that having to look at a second screen can be distracting, I wonder if there'll be a follow-up interview later today where it turns out that it's a mistranslation or something..

The Gamepad is a non-waterproof baby that needs to take a nap every three hours and starts crying about ad alerts after you've just fallen asleep.

Seriously though, the Gamepad "disrupting gameplay" is clearly circumstantial. Otherwise you wouldn't have reviewers stating they prefer the Gamepad in a ported game like Zombi.

He is right. I really do not like to play with the oversized gamepad at all and try to avoid it wherever possible. The pad was also the main reason why did not buy a Wii-U before the release of Xenoblade X.

Same. I'm on board for Zelda and NX unless they are planning do double down on the crazy for it.

As long as the NX controller has gyro aiming, I'll be ok without a Screen, even if it made item Management much easier.

At least offer compatibility with the next Handheld fir Off tv play and I'm happy.

Did you guys see what Aonuma said about Miyamoto not being on Zelda at all?

Breath of the Wild is the first console Zelda since creator Shigeru Miyamoto relinquished day-to-day development duties. “I’m actually the one who was the most affected by Miyamoto taking a step back, because now I have to take on all the responsibilities of Zelda,” Aonuma says. “I thought, hey, this is my chance to create something I really want to create!”

Damn. I said it was time for Miyamoto to step back. Nothing against Miyamoto, because we all love him, but he doesn't have a modern view as much. Also, it seemed like only Iwata wanted Miyamoto to use the Gamepad and nobody else really cared.

As nice as item management is, it's not worth throwing your consoles base price and to some extent, ergonomics, under a bus for

True, that's why I hope the NX offers compatibility with either their new Handheld for titles that want to support such a Mode or just allow the Gamepad to connect at least for off Screen play.

I still like the Gamepad, playing Off Screen and using it for Art Academy is still awesome.

I don't play anything on Wii U that requires the gamepad screen. Too fatiguing. No game should require multiple focal distances, ever. DS is fine, no fatigue. Gamepad is shit.

I have been using the Pro Controller for every game that allows it. This means all the games I own, except for Splatoon and Wind Waker.

I always thought that it was a hassle to use the Gamepad.

However, adventure/RPG games are the few instances where I think it could be very useful. Think of it as a book/codex of the world where you can check information.
