PS2 games you remember very fondly but everybody else forgot

Spider-Man 2:

Best super hero game ever (better than Arkham Asylum) and one of the best open world games I have ever played with the single most fun mechanic of any open world game in existence: swinging with your spider webs from building to building.
The game was so good and absolutely HUGE. I never 100%ed it even though I spent almost 50h with it. Terrific game. I finished #3 for X360 as well and while decent, it was nowhere near as good.

Transformers:

Transformers game by Melbourne House. OUTSTANDING graphics, and huge levels with multiple approaches to tackle your targets. I was astonished by how sophisticated the gameplay was back then because I honestly didn't expect much. The boss fights were great and the difficulty was pretty fucking rough too. I remember this game really fondly because of how low my expectations were going in.

Jade Cocoon 2:

I remember playing Jade Cocoon 1 on PS1, but sadly never finished it. Happened to see its sequel in a store and picked it up on a whim (didn't even know it existed prior to that) and I really loved it.

Mashed:

Micro Machines clone that was insane fun with four players. We bought a 4-controller-adapter solely because of this game and it was 100% worth it.

Mortal Kombat Deception. After that disappointing deadly alliance this was amazing. I still remember learning every other move as the aptly named protagonist, shujinko lol.

I saw this thread title, and I was like "I am totally going to post Jade Cocoon 2" and then you stole my thunder straight up in the OP. It's a totally great game that I think was quite underrated at the time, and is now all but forgotten - a real shame!

Hot Shots Tennis came out late in the PS2 cycle, and it sadly doesn't get the love that its golf cousins do. It isn't quite Virtua Tennis, but it is a really accessible tennis game with plenty to unlock to keep you playing for awhile.

NHL Hitz Pro is a fun arcade hockey game. While NFL Blitz Pro kind of scuffled, NHL Hitz Pro was a really solid nudge towards simulation while keeping its arcade roots intact. Wraparound goals were pretty much perfect.

Vampire Night, from Namco and SEGA, is a blast to play... pun intended. Cheesy voice acting, decent visuals, and lots of stuff to aim your Guncon at? Yup. All good.

Opening with Spiderman 2 is pretty close to "DAE remember this gem?" territory. Every topic about a Spiderman game is full of people clamoring for 2's swing mechanics back.

Another chance to post this.

Strategy game set in The Romance of 3 Kingdoms-era China, with an over dramatic story, quirky characters and historically accurate magical attacks like opening fissures in the ground and creating giant fire snakes.

<3 Mashed and Shadow of Rome was pretty cool too.

My addition would be Exermination from developer Deep Space, who developed Extermination and.. Extermination. I don't think they did anything else, ever. I think they merged with some other studio. However, someone who worked on it that people might know is Hidetaka Suehiro, also known as SWERY.

It's one of those titles where the jank is part of the charm, the setting was blatantly The Thing inspired, but it was genuinely freaky and it had some clever little touches. There's also a theme going on between the protagonist and his (ex) girlfriend with a very subtle development in the end-game (just something you pass by, not even a cutscene) that adds a rather dark humour twist to the end.

Urban Chaos: Riot Response was easily one of the best FPS's on the system (not a crowded field, but still...). Rocksteady's first game, before they became the Batman: Arkham factory, it takes a heavy-handed but still entertaining satirical take on FPS tropes and the contextually burgeoning crime-action genre. Its satire doesn't always hit its target, but its excellent and satisfying gameplay with its still novel FPS mechanics (lots of melee stuff, your riot shield is your most useful overall tool) more then make up for whatever shortcomings the storytelling may have.

The Getaway

Loved these two games to bits, especially The Getaway. Quite annoyed there was never a sequel for the PS3.

Hardly a forgotten game to be honest. I clearly remember the hype prior to its release. It just...was not that great. It was marketed as a Vice City killer which turned out a mistake.

No one has forgotten Jak and Daxter or Ape Escape. But they might as well have for all the sequels - or even spiritual sequels - we've gotten.

Spider Man 2 got mentioned in the OP, so I'll go with this one:

Shinobido Way of the Ninja

I love Ninja games on the PS2 and this is by far my favourite. The way it focused on stealth and making use of your items. I had a blast with it.

Drakan_-_The_Ancients'_Gates_Coverart.png

Drakan: The Ancients' Gates

This is one of my favourite swords and sorcery games ever. It had an amazing soundtrack, really good graphics (with an excellent draw distance in particular), very decent voice acting and excellent albeit fairly simple combat which played to the limitations of a control pad pretty well. It's also probably the only game I've played where on-foot and dragon-based combat is equally fun, and it's full of really fun and sometimes epic boss fights. A great adventure and I'd love it to get a re-release via PS2onPS4.

Spider-Man 2, really? Nobody's forgotten about that, people constantly referencing it as the best playing Spider-Man game.

Soccer Life

The combination of footall management, life and dating simulation was unique and even the game was all kinds of bad it was quite charming. Reminds me on the early German life simulation games from the 80''s and early 90's.

not as much forgot as nobody played those, a pity really because Mana Khemia is GOAT and funniest game too while MKh2 is as good.

A shame Gust completely abandoned the MK formula in favor of rehashing the game with same kawaii uguu girl over and over. :(

new Atelier games aren't that bad, but not Mana Khemia level of good for sure, what makes it even more sad how little those games are known or played

Spider-Man 2:

Wasn't this the game with the "retrieve the balloon" side quest? If so, I'd rather not remember it, thank you very much. Once or twice would have been fine, but hearing that kid yell "my ballooooooon!" every few minutes was torture.

I believe a gaffer worked qa on it. Poor guy/gal...

I'd like to nominate prisoner of war.

Sadly, it wasn't quite as good as I would have liked it, but it was still a perfectly enjoyable game. You had to escape from five different camps and there was a little bit of experimentation involved.

I heard they were making a sequel, but apparently it never released.

Huh, didn't know Drakan had a PS2 release. It's one of those games I heard about, knew was good, but never sat down to play. How does it hold up?

I wish I could contribute but everything i played as a child was on the gamecube, and everything i played on that was either shit or well known, and by the time i got a PS2 i was already old enough to ask people online what games i should play....d-does persona 3 count >_> I went to my video rental store and was looking to rent Persona 4 but they didnt have it so i rented Persona 3 instead. Long story short Persona 3 is my favorite video game of all time and i've played it like 5 times

Actually i would put Ultimate Spiderman here but i played it on the gamecube...

Great graphics for its time and a very creative, unique, vibrant universe. We really don't get enough solid action JRPGs. Would love to see a sequel, which will probably never happen because Level 5 is too busy making Yokai Watch and anime soccer games.

Mark of Kri probably deserves a place here.

As does Oni

Neither are terribly obscure, but they both do very interesting things in their respective genres, and -- I think -- serve as a pitstop between the 'classic' and 'modern' action and TPS titles respectively.
This was a brilliant game that had an awesome art style and genuinely enjoyable gameplay. I still have it laying around somewhere now. I just need to acquire a working ps2 now.

Terrible voice acting and unique if very frustrating mechanics assured me I would never actually beat this game as a teenager, but it was funny to play.

musashilegend_ps2box_usa_org_000.jpg

I never had the PSOne predecessor to this game, so I went into this headfirst. Really good soundtrack but going back to it I cant make heads or tails on anything anymore.

The_Simpsons_Wrestling_Coverart.png

Everyone forgot this existed, and when it existed everyone thought it was garbage, and rightfully so, unfortunately I got ahold of a game magazine that listed every single wrestling technique of all the characters and I got the game and played it for hours trying to unlock everything. And not once did I question if this game wasn't actually good. Had fun though.
