Hideki Kamiya talks Scalebound - "The biggest game of my career"

I'll withhold judgement until I see more or we get a demo. Not really crazy about what they've shown. Kamiya is a good game designer, I'm not gonna write this off yet.

Kamiya has a flawless track record when it comes to directing games. I have faith in him and in Scalebound.

With that said, Scalebound looks like the type of game that would benefit greatly from the extra power that the Scorpio will provide.

Ive said it before but, I thought W101 was a disaster waiting to happen, it was the most pleasant surprise this gen.
 
Bigger doesn't always mean better, Kamiya. Take the Scalebound E3 demo for instance; it supposedly showed Platinum's biggest boss battle ever, but it was a totally dull and lifeless fight. Compare it to the boss in the Nier Automata trailer, and it looks awful by comparison.

His games would better fit in the Playstation catalog. I wonder why he chose to make an Xbox exclusive

I doubt he 'chose' at all. Platinum are a work-for-hire studio and compared to most publishers I'm sure MS offered them a good deal.

My hype for this game was severely depleted after that E3 demo. I'll be keeping my eye on it but this game has me losing interest quick.

I agree, even though Scalebound's latest showing was pretty poor, I still think Kamiya can deliver the goods.

He said this when the game revealed too.

It's not going to have the deep combat that his fans are accustomed to, but I think it will be a pretty good ARPG. I'm envisioning 8/10 range in scores.

Because Nier is a pure action game, Scalebound is an RPG, it's open world, there are cities, leveling, dungeons, exploration. It's not a 10 hours long game. You can't compare the two games.
 
The game looks great.

Imagine if every Treasure game had to be Gunstar Heroes... Marina in Mischief Makers just shaking stuff and dashing, with "fans" talking about "where's the gunplay?"

i find it very curious when some people try to dissuade "detractors" by calling it an "rpg" and conveniently omitting the action portion
 
I'm probably one of the few excited for that one. Something about 4 players riding around on dragons in a big ass world sounds real appealing to me.
 
Both demos felt short, the first one looked like an early part of the game and the second was like a lvl1 player fighting an overpowered boss with late lvl players. Not the best of presentation but I get that the game is a coop RPG and I expect to have a scalable difficulty ala Diablo. They really need to make trailers showing the world, story and mechanics.
MS hype machine don't fail me, you need to set your engines on march.

Seriously, when I heard him say that I was just scratching my head like "Did you forget about the Unicron sized final boss that you fought in your own giant robot?"
It's why I'm weary of when he says it's the "biggest game I've ever made".
 
I'm surprised to hear him say that, considering what I've seen so far really didn't impress me knowing it was coming from him; a guy who has a arm's length list of incredible titles to his name. Here's hoping the demos just sucked and it will live up to this.

I have a feeling Nier will totally steal the show from Platinum in 2017. It'll probably sell less than Scalebound too, which saddens me.
 
Kamiya is hitting all the right notes for me, I am sucker for Action RPGs and with multiplayer PG is shaping this up quite nicely. Hopefully the game turns out well and console preferences doesn't make Scalebound the black sheep of Platinum Games' catalog. Very much looking forward to playing this Day 1.

I'm not comparing the two games; I'm specifically comparing the boss battles they chose to show. The one in Nier was awesome and the one in Scalebound was crap. Why, when he has this huge dragon does the protagonist spend most of the battle on the ground shooting arrows into the spider-crab's jaws? None of its attacks looked dangerous, the protagonist's range of attacks looks very meagre and the scale of the encounter is wasted because not only does it size mean very little, but it also goes down so quickly.

That being said, maybe I'm prejudiced against big bosses as, for instance, my favourite bosses in God of War are Perseus and Hercules, where I'm sure a lot of people would talk about Poseidon or the Kraken. I also thought the boss in the FFXV demo looked shit (even worse than Scalebound), and although visually impressive having such a large enemy is actually not very enjoyable to fight.

The footage they chose to show last year was a lot better, but I think if this is representative of the boss battles in Scalebound then it's going to be pretty disappointing in that regard in my opinion.

Edit - one last thing; I don't agree that because it's an action-RPG the boss battles have to be any less good. Look at Dragon's Dogma for example, and the excellent boss battles in that game. Or, for something closer to home, Okami.
 
Seems from the intervew he cant say much of what the game is about. MS is about to go on a marketing blitz with this game?

More story info closer to release to be revealed too.

Interseting that a lot of stuff is being held close to the chest.

Scalebound is a perfect example of why this is needed.

It may be his biggest game and something he has always wanted to make but it doesn't work.

Scalebound is not only disappointing mechanically, (based in what we have seen) it's also a game without an audience.

The typical person who is into platinum and Japanese action/RPG games in general are going to be turned off by the smug, focus tested Western protagonist. Not to mention the combat looks far too grindy and simplistic, even for Monster hunter fans.

The typical Xbox gamer, outside of platform evangelists are still not on the Japanese approach to fantasy that is still present in the game.

The typical casual gamer (and granted this is conjecture) is not going to have a good time with the dexterity requirements that a Kamiya game requires. His games have never been "press A for awesome" and will require a significant time investment to get to the meat and potatoes.

I'm sure there will be a few contrarians who proclaim this as the best thing ever, but right now, the games chances are not looking great. It's now had 2 e3s to create hype and one gamescom. The overall consenus is the game looks mediocre at best, slight offensive at worse.

If it doesn't exicte the small base here that at one point lived and breathed platinum, it has no chance in the wider market, where infintely more desirable projects like quantum break and ROTR have struggled.

Right now, people should more concern that Microsoft doesn't pull the plug and take Platinum (and by extension, Nier) with it.
Maybe for its scope, but im sure this wont ve Platinum worst selling game by far.
I would be surprised if it doesnt get at least a million

I'm still not sure what the game is about at a simplistic level. The two demos I have seen is just the guys (or guys) fighting, but I am not sure how the game in general is going to work...

Anyway, I expect to enjoy it. Kamiya has yet to dissapoint me.

Next time show us more of what the world is like, the scope and exploration etc. I'm sure it'll be a good game in the end, but showing some guy shooting arrows at a giant crab isn't what I would call 'exciting.'
