System Shock Remastered Demo Available June 28th

Just finished first run through the demo. The layout of what's there of the Medical Level is as spot on as the pre-alpha videos led to believe. Some of the UI elements are also pretty well appreciated, my favorite being that hovering your cursor over a part of the environment for a second will give you a description of what it is, much like how the original let you click on parts of the environment and it would give a brief description. A lot of other details reminiscent of the original were especially nice and made going through this demo pretty breezy for me.

The one thing I lamented that they did not have in was the option to toggle on or off mouse look like in SS2 (and the SS1 Mouselook mod), but this is pre-alpha so I would hope that's somewhere in the pipeline. Mousing over the keypad and circuit breaker was a bit finicky because I'd rather not have to shift my view ever so slightly just to push a damn button next to another. Also maybe not having the inventory take up the center part of the screen and blur out the rest. It's neat you can drag stuff out of your inventory and drop it into the world, but I'd like it if you could better see the item you're pulling out get dropped or thrown. But again, pre-alpha.

Seems pretty promising for what's there, though I'm still looking at this through a pretty critical eye as I absolutely adore the original System Shock from the aesthetic to the soundtrack and even to the way you interfaced with that world. Felt weird going through the demo seeing the first quarter of Medical with much more darker and atmospheric lighting, along with extremely minimal sound. That's another thing, looking at the kickstarter I'm kinda bummed out that they are wanting to make a new score with a full orchestra. And yeah, there's a stretch goal for a remixed version of the original game's soundtrack, but that honestly should've been part of the base funding goal to begin with. The music is such a big part of that game and it's cyberpunk influenced aesthetic that I don't see an ambient, orchestrated score having the same effect.

I'll think about backing it within the next month, at least until I feel confident that particular stretch goal will be reached, but I will give my best wishes to Night Dive on this regardless. They've got one hell of a huge undertaking with this game, and the demo gave me more than enough examples that they seem to get what they're doing.

Don't fuck up.

The demo is pretty rough. That trademark Unity stutter, a lot of unimplemented features, very crude enemy AI, plus it just crashed on me.

...and it still manages to be a more enjoyable experience than many of today's games. In for $25.

As far as I know, you still have to manually drag items into your inventory. I do know they fixed certain aspects of it like mouselook not working in cyberspace.

Honestly, I've never played with the mouselook mod much.
You can pick up items by double clicking on them.

The full release of System Shock will be initially available for Windows and Xbox One. The Windows version will be available on Steam, Humble, and GOG (DRM-free). OSX and Linux versions will be unlocked when our first stretch goal is reached. We’re open to other platforms in the future.

I hope for PS4.

Well it sure sucks that we Xbox One backers don't have a demo to try out today like those on PC. Sure it's free for everyone but it would be nice to have something for the people backing on Xbox One and want to try it out. Not everyone has a PC to run this and if you're going to make Xbox One a supported platform this isn't a good start by omitting them.

Yeah, I noticed this as well. I like the new aesthetics and all but the music is a pretty huge part of these games for me. I won't back it until it at least hits that stretch goal.

I hate that almost every dev these days feel like their game needs a orchestra soundtrack even when it doesn't fit the game at all.
This is what it needs

Wow, are Unity games always this GPU intensive? Heard my 970's fan for the first time while playing the demo.

Anyway, backed at $30 tier because I was just a few seconds late to get in on the early bird tier.

Developing a demo for an entirely separate platform takes time and money.

Is it just the demo or is something wrong on my end because the textures are unfiltered, they're super pixelated up close.

Just finished the demo. Pretty rough at the moment but damn does it feel good to be in the System Shock universe again.

The atmosphere is laid on super thick, I really like the sound design too. Had no idea what was behind that door and hearing a raspy weird voice shout "SOS" and "I know you're there" was creepy as hell.

I mean, it's not coming out for like a year and a half...

God dammit, I was stuck in a perma-crouch after descending a ladder and thought I was walking into a huge opening, turn a corner and see what I think is a huge lanky mutant. To my horror, I can't run, so I "walk" back to the ladder and once I'm up I can stand again, realising it was just a regular mutant :lol.

Are you sure you didn't install System Shock Enhanced Edition by mistake?

It's made 73k in it's first hour, it's doing fine.

Well, unless SS Enhanced has fully 3D environments, volumetric smoke with shadowing and a whole lot of shader action then, no :p.

When I first opened the Kickstarter page, it was at 16k. Then I went and messed around in the demo for a bit, then came back to the Kickstarter page and it was already at 75k. Hopefully we can hit some nice stretch goals.

A bit bummed out that you have to hit 1.9million to get remixed original OST though. That's just weird.

I just backed it. Night Dive has done very well with the recent re-releases and I know this is obviously a few tiers above that as they're pretty much remaking this game from the ground up, but I have faith in them.

Only real gripe I had...that Pipe swinging animation.

Pledged $30.

It seems to me that the textures are an artistic choice to match up with the original while still having a high resolution. I like it.

Did a 750 ti benchmark for YT. At 1080p it usually hovers in the lower 30s, sometimes dipping into the 20s in some places. I could really use a beefier card at this point.

Maybe an artistic choice? The textures in the original were unfiltered as well.
It's possible that's what they're going for, but it clashes pretty badly with the "modern" lighting and the two ton layer of effects they've lathered on top.

Edit: Fixed. Thanks!

Edit: Is there a BBCode tag I can use to make these into a reasonable size or a thumbnail or something?

Put quote tags around your image tags like this

Supposedly they'll be changing layouts (why, when it is supposed to be a remake. Keep like 90% of it, IMO), so I'd say textures and stuff will be changed as well.

I got stuck trying to climb a ladder and having the game freak out on that when I was trying to go back and heal. Where does the demo end? Shortly after that?

Performance is terrible for me with a single GTX 970. Steam's FPS overlay shows 60-70 FPS, but it feels like 30 or below. I hope to god they make the full game perform better, but since it's running on the Unity engine I won't hold my breath...
