Mighty No. 9 |OT| The Blue Bomba

I hate to be that guy. I mean the game consistently forces me to disconnect my keyboard just to get it to see my gamepad. that sucks.

but other than that...once I get it full screen at 1900x1200...it looks good on my computer man...I can't say that I don't like the game. Its not perfect, but its hard and fuck if it doesn't make me want to play more. Sometimes I have to take breaks because I need to throw my controller, because I kill myself or something stupid, like on the highway stage. But this is a game I will actually beat, and will probably replay...

And I'm not unhappy with my purchase.

Congrats on the plat! To be honest, I'm still waiting in my ps4 version in hopes of a guide, but if you don't mind me asking, what guide for backers do you speak of?

We have a digital strategy guide at Humble Bundle.

Some people just like to waste their freaking time, I guess.
I'm writing a review and unlike the other reviewers out there who set their lives to 9 I decided I was going to try hard enough to beat the game on its terms and know what that meant before I wrote he review. It also helps me have more experience to know everything that can go wrong in this game. The geometry crush didn't happened until near the end.

Almost done with all the bosses. Is it agreed the bomb, sword, and ice are the best?
I even forgot the Seismic transformation existed when I fought the boss who was supposed to be weak to it. I tried another run to see if it did anything different and it's pretty awful. As in, I couldn't even win again. This is like Top Spin from MM2 where it's almost complete garbage except in situational speed runs?

Seismic is indeed garbage I don't think I ever once made use of it.

Been trying to get through Ray's campaign. I really like how she has different power ups than Beck, so there is some new abilities to try out. Some powers are pretty darn weak, though, but that was the case for Beck, too.

Somehow the Robot Factory is quite a bit harder for her than Beck. Pausing for now, but the mid-boss and end-level boss are not easy to deal with.

They aren't that hard with the thunder ability. Just shoot it and then focus on dodging. For the end level boss I found it to work really well.

I have about 2 bosses to go on my Ray run, definitely allot of fun and a huge challenge at times. Worst feeling in the world when you slip up and die with only 1 hit remaining on the boss though.. :(

Those are the only 3 I use. Ice takes over from my main weapon for combo-ing, sword is useful for close encounters especially the small buggers on Power Station stage, and Bomb is great for damaging groups of enemies at once. Never found a need to use the others. Avi's weapon is good in theory, but I never really had a point where I needed to use it bar in the Robot Factory stage. Mic's is a cool concept that is useless in the main game. Challenge 18 though forces you to use it, its probably my favourite challenge in the game.

Still no backer codes for EU WiiU owners I'm guessing?

I mean I kind of figured 'shortly' would actually mean about a week or later, but I'm hoping they'll be able to get those out within a month or so atleast.

Managed to finish the game in under an hour. Not really as difficult as I expected. I just went for Bat first, then Cryo and then Brand for the three weapons I needed, then just followed the weakness chart from there. There are several corners that can be cut in levels that are easy to see, and many enemies can be skipped with well placed dash jumps. Oh, and I only died a couple of times only if I was right next to a checkpoint.
It was a fun speed run, I managed to get a few good S ranks as I played through the game.

Now I'm having issues on Hard mode and the other challenges I have left (basically just the last challenge where you can't die and have to complete the entire game in one sitting...)
I can get to the last boss on hard mode, but just can't beat it, I can get mid way through phase 2 but always slip up in the end. Any tips? Brands weapon can basically let you stand next to phase 1 and slash away at it without taking any damage, but I still slip up a couple of times taking big damage...

Try using the Humble Bundle reorder page, just use the email that you used to register kickstarter with and you will get the code.

It's dumb how they handled the EU Wii U code as in their e-mail they stated that it's on humble bundle but I don't have a humble bundle account and had no idea where to look for it.

Hard mode complete now, I wish I could just replay the final boss battle on hard mode to learn the block patterns on the first phase, else its just easier for me to abuse Brands weapon instead for the ridiculous invincibility it gives you!

I'm now working on Hyper difficulty. Honestly not noticing much of a bump in difficulty bar the extra damage. I've played the levels so many times that I've memorised pretty much everything in the game now!

One thing I'm confused though. How do the energy tanks work (as in how do you fill them?) As I can't figure out how you can fill the second E tank, and I'm not sure what I'm doing to fill the first one either (and its damn annoying to lose it after I die, mainly just against the final boss).

I don't think I'll be able to clear the boss rush at the moment. I'd have fewer issues if it was set to "normal difficulty" but the bosses getting the extra speed/move patterns from hard mode adds an extra layer of challenge to the battles. Oh, that and Mighty No 2 does stupid amount of damage...

Countershade's stage is definitely the worst one so far. Just running around in circles with no checkpoints. The Dyna appearance doesn't even seem to do anything at all.

Dyna appearance disrupts the purple insta death lasers in one room (the enemy encounter room with several of the statues that come to life). I'm fairly certain if you tackle that level before beating her first then the lasers go on and off in that one encounter, but that's the only one point where I've seen her doing anything else useful.

Well, I wouldn't describe running all the way to right until Countershade appears as running in circles. :p

Unless my game was bugged the 3 times I tried that stage.

I feel like my brain is broken, because I liked Countershade's level the best. Maybe because there wasn't much in the way of bullshit platforming killing me? Also, Dyna's weapon made the bossfight a complete joke.

Dyna's stage is inoffensive except for that one bit where you have to use the crouch dash PERFECTLY or you instantly die - an ability that has almost zero worth outside of sliding through gaps (which it does automatically anyway). Such horseshit.

I'm almost tempted to ask for a refund on this Wii U version of the game. Generally nor a good port, but it is horrendously, unplayably bad in segments (if I use Mighty No. 3's weapon during the final stage, the framerate drops to single digits, I swear) and twice during play my controller got disconnected, which, outside of a drained battery, has never happened to me in the years of playing any games on my Wii U.

Countershade is one of the worst levels I've ever played.

It's not even hard, and his boss fight is ridiculously easy, but the design is atrocious.

My game updated today. Can't see what it's for. Xbox One player here.
Edit; Vermilion Destroyer update
Speaking of which, is that the DLC for Ray? I got a code for the DLC in my Humble Bundle and I redeemed it, but I can't find an option anywhere (as of Saturday night) to actually play as Ray.

I think the boss-becomes-ally thing is a good idea, but criminally underutilized, and shouldn't be told to you on the level screen.
Unless I'm mistaken, it seems like a subtle way of telling the player whose weapon is most effective against that Mighty No. I've only ever seen the option come up for a pairing that matches the weapon order diagram in the strategy guide and circulating on reddit.

It's not really subtle, that's exactly what it is. The game outright tells you what the bosses weaknesses are with it.

Played a few more hours tonight, finally remembered to play Ray's stage and unlock her. Her stage seemed cool enough, and I did enjoy the fast paced boss battles against Ray. Playing as her seems cool when it comes to playing through stages, you can't afford to waste time since her health is always ticking down, but I felt because of that the boss fight I've done so far (Dyna) ended up feeling more frustrating than fun since I'd always be within inches of winning, then dying as all my health had evaporated. I just need to get better accomodated with her I think.

On the brighter side of progress, I managed to almost finish challenge mode! I finally figured out stage 19 (the "6 shots to kill all enemies" challenge) and stage 36 (clear the entire game in one sitting without dying, no patch support). I'm somewhat surprised I didn't choke on challenge 36, as there were a few points I had earmarked as choke points where I'd screw up (pretty much the entire highway, the second half of the capitol building, the spike sections in both the prison and robot factory, some of the pits in the final level). I also had to work around my control issues I have with the came - like ledge grabbing and sometimes spiraling down to my death thanks to the downward dash.
It was really fun, makes me glad I had so many issues on the highway earlier (doing it on Hyper mode) as I'd completely memorised which signs appear where so I knew exactly where the hazards were.
Now if only I could nail boss rush down...

Haven't really been following Mighty No 9 news after pledging on Kickstarter but I just redeemed it on PSN and now I only have access to the PS3 version. I thought you got PS3/4/Vita versions because of Cross-buy, did I actually pay for a game on a system I'm hardly ever going to play on?

Really? "Ridiculously easy"? I had to waste a recover on him. Am I using the weakness wrong? It did pitifully poor damage and ended up just using the Battalion attack most of the time.

After finishing the eight bosses I have to agree with everybody saying the game is better than its reputation. It's a solid 7 or even 8 for me (will have to see once I finish the game) and feels like a Mega Man game.

Countershade was the easiest of the eight Numbers. I didn't bother with the weakness, most of the time I would just stand on the middle chandelier and keep shooting in his face or back. It was really easy.

I was hoping the Mighty Numbers wouldn't die as soon as I saw the design for Pyro. He was just too good to be killed off after one game ala Megaman games.

It's probably partly due to Inafune's trans-media initiative (gotta keep the cast around for the anime) but I'm happy for it either way.

Hyper mode is now complete, I even managed to S rank the final level!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKZX8kL5Jog

Its actually a fairly easy going final level when you've played it a dozen or more times, honestly I have more issues with the Robot Factory stage (well, parts of it). I do much prefer the Robot Factory stage though, forcing you to use all your different moves was an awesome idea that was actually executed pretty well.

Now I just need to do another Hard mode run and clear boss rush and I'll have the plat trophy. This game has definitely grown on me, to me the game has gone from a 5/6 to an 8. I'm loving going after higher ranks in levels, I can clear all the levels without dying and I really like nearly all the boss battles. I actually do hope by some small miracle that the game gets a sequel as if the concept gets tightened up and refined a bit I think it could be a great game.

Is it normal if I think Ray is way better than Beck? Dashing as Ray actually makes sense and allows the levels to flow better.

I'm feeling the same way, she definitely has a few decent advantages over Beck. I really need to go back to her campaign to see how I fare with her in later levels. I do love her dash though, completely decimates weak enemies. Its a nice change in gameplay at very least.

Still haven't got a reply to my email regarding an incorrect region code...

My luck with getting timely Kickstarter codes is not great.

I just finished the main game and the first Ray level and overall I really liked it as a "Megaman" type game but the score it gets is understandable. The only stage I didn't enjoy was the one with Call and the final stretch of the game felt short, specially since its missing the "now fight all the bosses again" that the Megaman games tend to do at the end. Just for context I never been a fan of classic Megaman and the only one I finished was the first Gameboy one, but all the other "main" Megaman series I love (except Starforce, never got a DS so I don't know anything about it).

What I liked:
*I do like the story focus, I know people hate that the game is interrupted by the story but as a first play through I like it, but there should be a way to disable them for a second play (haven't checked if there is an option or a game mode for it).
*I find that the challenge is good on normal, not a breeze and not too hard. I'm accustomed that "normal" these days means easy and hard mode is the true normal mode.
*I really like that the Mighty Numbers interact on the other stages helping Beck and hopefully if there ever is a MN9-2 they can have a bigger role for example: Beck gets kidnapped close to the end of MN9-2 and you have to control all of the Mighty Numbers on different parts of a stage to rescue him.
*I love that defeating Brand basically transforms you into Zero so for those that prefer to play close range (like me) get another play style unlocked.
*Although I didn't use it much I do like that there is a crouch dash that you can use to dash under enemy bullets.
*It's nice that you can quick select up to three forms.... but the button utilization could have been better like having it be more like Ni-oh sword stances(hold R1 and the face buttons become four posible forms).

What I didn't like:
*I know that it's "tradition" but I don't like that the bosses powers have a bar that limits their use, It always makes me only use them when I need them so I play for the most part as Beck/Brand. Luckily on MN9 it's the best version of it since their powers recharges with time or by absorbing enemies so it's not that bad but I still wish that this concept dies and just balance the powers for regular use.
*When you scroll the MN powers Beck should transform immediately instead of having to confirm them, this I find to be the most annoying aspect of the game.
*This is a nitpick but I wish that there was a pre-established order for the MN powers instead of using the order I defeated them.
*I wish that every MN Power was more of a "move set" to give them more of a use instead of just one attack. In other words I want them to be more like Brandish power with his sword attack/Sword Spin/Down Slash and even his power could've used R1+attack to use his dive kick/slash.
*Should've used MMX wall slide mechanic instead of edge grab they use.
*You lose your healing items if you die.
*There should be a way to cancel the downward dash.

Random thoughts:
*The cutscenes should've been like the ones in Ray's mode since it's obvios that the models aren't made to emote. You can even see they just pasted a mouth texture on Grahm's mouth without making sure it looks natural: https://youtu.be/f66XwaZxDv0?t=29m8s
*They should've done more with the Mighty Numbers like having them hang out on the main menu lab and be able to talk to them.
*Aviators stage was my favorite and it also looks nice.
*It really bothers me how Sanda has his suspenders over his lab coat.
*Played on PS4 and only noticed framerate issues on a part of Cryosphere stage and one of the last stages, aside from that it ran well but I do agree it should run better.
*Really didn't like that Call for some reason talks like a robot, it's really weird since all the other robots talk "normal".
*Ray's R1+attack should be her mouth laser.

So yeah, my final thoughts: The game was able to scratch my Megaman itch and I would like to see a sequel that improves on the game but I won't be sad if there isn't one.

Man, this game is hard for me. Is there a recommended order on which stages I should take on first? Spent about 40 minutes on Pyro stage before I ragequit.

I know I barely scratched the surface but so far got a good impression from playing the intro stage. I find the dash mechanic really fun. Think I will enjoy this game since I am setting the bar rather low based on what I have read.

Hehe, classic mistake starting with the first stage you see since these types of games usually misdirect you on which stage to start with. :p

That said the bosses are all still pretty doable with the regular shot anyway. It's more about knowing the patterns well enough to avoid getting hit.

This is a suggested order I saw on Steam:

Mighty No. 5 (Battalion)
Mighty No. 4 (Seismic)
Mighty No. 7 (Brandish)
Mighty No. 3 (Dynatron)
Mighty No. 8 (Countershade)
Mighty No. 6 (Aviator)
Mighty No. 1 (Pyrogen)
Mighty No. 2 (Cryosphere)

Well, today I managed to get the platinum trophy on this game. Boss rush was the only thing holding me back, and I got really lucky fighting against Brand - I somehow managed to prevent him from going into his super move (where he dashes all over the screen) and the fight ended up being much easier (and less damaging) because of it. Really wish I knew how I did that just for reference.

Seems like a good order, but I'd put Mighty No 2 up as the second boss you take out - as her weapon is so damn useful in so many of the stages. You can use Bat's weapon to have her fall flat on her ass making the fight more doable so you don't really lose much by tackling her level sooner rather than later. That's just from my experience though, as I'd always be using 2's weapon as soon as possible.

I dunno man, my monitor seems to be able to do wonders. It even made the fire and the water everyone complained about so badly to look pretty decent. The water looks wet, the fire looks all orange and hot-like.

Honestly, anyone who is not a jaded gamer can spend the retail price on this game and can be happy. They can be, whether they will be is entirely up to their moment in life, socioeconomic status, interpersonal relationship histories, etc. But the game won't be the problem. The problem will be them.

I'm on the military base stage. I just got to pre-boss room, got a healing item, and the 2nd doors just won't open. I'm supposed to be able to take the stages on in any order, right? Prior to this I've only gone through the Radio Tower/Avi stage. Is there any reason why the 2nd set of doors won't open?
