Played some Darius Gaiden last night. PSP-3000 Component Out to consumer Samsung 29 inch SDTV from 2004. Looks good enough, but can´t seem to get colors 100% to my liking even using the service mode. Camera doesn´t help either.

Looks nice on that Samsung! I should bust out my psp and see how it looks on a CRT, I tried it on flatscreen monitor once and the scaling was ass.

PS1 games via PSP TV out on a 3000 unit looks pretty damn good, specially using component. It gives you a full-screen 240p picture. Native PSP games aren´t as nice as it just displays an interlaced 480i and very small picture. PSPGo is actually a great option too, as you can sync a Dual Shock 3 controller and leave the handheld by the TV and play on your couch or whatever. The only drawback is that there´s some input lag for PS1 games, but its great for casual play.

What? Native PSP games do 480p, in fact I think they can only display 480p while 480i is for PS1 and video programs and such.

You are correct, when played on an HDTV through component, native PSP games do display in 480p, albeit with borders; some HDTVs don´t like being fed 240p content through component, which is why it displays in 480i in HD sets, I´m not really sure if you can play PS1 games on 480p with TV out.

But that changes when using the TV out function on a SDTV, PS1 games are display in nice crisp 240p fullscreen image, and PSP native games run in 480i as SDTVs don´t really support 480p/31 khz modes.

EDIT: It was PSP-2000 units that could only do 480p for PSP games, PSP-3000 does support 480i for playing in SD sets.

I'm sure you can.

Good to know, don´t really play those on HDTV as I would rather use my PS3 for that. Mostly use the TV out function on SDTV for PS1@240p.

EDIT: Just tested it out, there´s indeed support for 480p in PS1 games. Shame about those borders on PSP games, though you could get around that using your set´s zoom function. Sorry, no scanlines here as I don´t have an upscaler / scanline generator.

Street Fighter Zero 3, Sega Saturn, JVC DT-V1710CGU monitor. Just playing with depth of field using a security camera lens on my camera. Can get crazy effects but not great focus anywhere.

Gorgeous shot, Beer Monkey!

Love the 480p shots, Mega, the ones you did of Tatsunoko awhile back are ace too.

Ultimate Ghosts n Goblins, PSP Out to 480p CRT

I need to know more about your setup, I've been dying to play PSP games on a TV at decent quality. Your shots look great (and you picked the best game on the system to show!), is output being scaled to full screen?

Do you get full screen with your psp games?

My setup is a PSP Slim, third-party Component cables, JVC DT-V1710CG HD CRT monitor.

It's a CRT, so no scaling. I do not get fullscreen. For one, the games are about 16:9 and my monitor is 4:3, so unavoidable letterboxing. I do have a bezel that goes on the face of the monitor and covers up the top and bottom to make the screen into 16:9! :p

Second, the PSP still doesn't take up the full width of the monitor, except with PS1 games and movies from what I hear. I don't know why it does this, but it appears to be hardcoded into the PSP video output because my monitor has 900 lines of horizontal resolution, more than enough to resolve the 480px width. The height is also only 270px... altogether it's a system barely about standard SD resolutions. The monitor is more than capable of handling fullscreen 480p and full widescreen 480p, 1080i and 720p.

What you end up with is a smaller 16:9 PSP picture with a large black frame completely around it. This also happens with HDTVs. However I can manually increase my CRT's H and V size settings to have the game take up more of that empty space and not appear so small. edit: Coincidentally, BeerMonkey explained what happens with the PSP output in the Upscalers thread.

PSP games are 480x272 so it puts that inside a 720x480 output with thick black bars on all four sides.

Some additional screens:

God of War
Minus the bloomy brownness of last gen, this game looks nice in person. However it doesn't photograph so well during regular gameplay, with resizing in imgur possibly making it even worse. The grassfield shot was one of the decent ones. Some other full-size images: 1 2 3 4

I have a D24 BVM and unfortunately no way to get psp full screen even with adjusting with the geometry settings.
I might try with the xrgb mini :/

Posted a couple of Wild Guns shots on instagram in anticipation of the PS4 game.

Difficult to get good shots in this game. Pausing the game dims the image so the first pic has a longer exposure and some post-processing using built-in IG tools to make it look right. I think the 2nd pic is straight off the camera with a 1/60th shutter speed shot from the attract mode loop.

Rescued a 2004 JVC i'art CRT that was being thrown out a few months ago. 240p gaming via Wii VC is pretty sweet.

I tried to play around with contrast and brightness on these but it looks like the camera picks up too much magenta..

Nice to see this thread doing the rounds again, I have been trying to extract animated gifs from my PVM but syncing the camera to the refresh has been a ballache. my best result so far:
