After how vanilla and uninteresting the Neo and Scorpio announcements were, it's good to see someone is willing to try something different in the home console space.

By effectively exiting it?

I guess it is something we haven't seen for...well... about 16 years.

The proposition that a handheld with TV-out is a 'home console' is not very convincing.

Nintendo has seemingly decided they don't have any distinct new ideas to get decent traction in the home space and have decided not to expensively tick that box for its own sake next cycle. They don't want another 5 years of a discrete home business weighing down profits and it seems they didn't have the confidence that it would be otherwise if they stuck with it. Maybe in the future they'll try again?

So if it's Tegra powered...

...no backwards compatibility, no third party support, and might not even be graphically on par with the Xbox One.

Thanks Nintendo.

This. It's like at this point, Nintendo is just doing shit for the sake of being different, without it's ideas actually being good ones. It's fucking frustrating.

So NX releases 3.5 years after the PS4 and has graphical capabilities like the X1.

lmao...

Nintendo did it again: Lackluster hardware compared to it´s competitors.

To be fair I don't think it was in Nintendo's best interests to compete on hardware when the PC space is crushing the existing consoles. Putting out a PS4.25 hardware tier priced under Neo/Scorpio and over PS4/XB1 and trying to split that market three ways is probably not a great decision. They'll lose a slice of third party (as if they ever had it) and fail to rope in console hardware enthusiasts (heh) and try to carve out their own niche by banking on portability, I guess.

I'm kinda disappointed but it's so very typical Nintendo that I'm not really surprised.

Also, this means Monster Hunter on the big screen eventually and that's what I've been waiting for since MH4U!

Or like I said earlier, it's even possible the dock contains another GPU and when both are hooked up, it provides even more power to the system.

I think the possibilities are endless.

Oh! Imagine if the "handheld" is the core of the system, and if Nintendo decides to end the NX generation and provide another generational leap, all they have to do is switch out the dock for a more powerful GPU that could hook up to the NX handheld to just it a generational leap.

All speculation on my part, but just think of all the possibilities!

Cool speculation though, and falls in line with that patent.

Meanwhile people are playing on their upgraded PS4s with an even more powerful Xbox a couple months away.

But on the other hand, I see Nintendo being able to push out a major title pretty much every month with this thing. So if you are a big Nintendo fan, that really doesn't matter.

Every month? ok...

basically like I said earlier in the thread do a thread search for Wii U recommendations, 3DS recommendations, and then exclude the overlap like NSMB2/NSMBU, Smash 3DS/Wii U etc.

yes, it's an attempt to stay relevant and a good attempt at that. they're leveraging their strengths and basically making their weaknesses irrelevant.

also with Nintendo now on mobile the 3DS selling less than the DS because of that market's rise is much less significant to the future on Nintendo and the Wii U selling significantly less than the Wii has been pretty much swept under the rug with this new direction. now home console gaming is a bullet point for their new hardware.

time will tell whether or not its successful but it's basically their best and only play after the things you mentioned.

Yeah and all that with Pokemon Go amazing success in the background. Exciting times ahead for the future direction of Nintendo.

Anyone thinking that perhaps the portable hybrid plugs into a more capable home system? Would explain the 'supplemental computing device' patent and rumours.

Perhaps the controller/handheld setup augments the home hardware when you plug it in. That way you've got one controller for both platforms, a portable device and a home console.

Needn't be too expensive as Nintendo could cut corners with production and would likely be getting a fair deal with Nvidia anyway considering the circumstance.

That said, you could still choose to own only one or the other, due to the parity between them.

Underpowered and has a gimmick that encroaches on the mobile market, where the vast majority of people would rather have an smartphone anyways than carrying 8 things?

If true, we're running out of nail space for the possibility that Nintendo has any grasp of the modern gaming market unless this thing is hyper portable and also runs Android and also is actually just a phone that docks.

The hell is going on at Nintendo?

Even the last-gen Tegra K1 is more powerful than Wii U.

X360 and PS3 weren't able to do DX10? They only went up to DX9?

What I think is interesting is that just last week NOA posted job listings for "Lead, Retail Marketing Console" and "Lead, Retail Marketing Portable."

https://nintendo.taleo.net/careersection/jobdetail.ftl?job=160000004H&lang=en

https://nintendo.taleo.net/careersection/jobdetail.ftl?job=160000004G&lang=en

Obviously this could just be for their existing product lines, but it could also show that while they are merging development, they are still going to market separately to audiences.

Thoughts?

Nope, it´s a hybrid, and I would solely use it as a home-console connected to my TV. So it has to compete with Neo and Scorpio in terms of graphics.

Nintendo (correctly) understands that the kind of people who would require it be as powerful as Neo or Scorpio to buy it are not going to buy it in the first place, because those people are probably going to buy Neo or Scorpio.

Furthermore, it isn't a given that Nintendo is even capable of making such a console.

I'm really excited for this.

Before I would have to buy their console for a narrow list of games and I just avoided their handheld offerings and missed a lot of great games because of discomfort, that just expanded so win for me. The jury is still out on how powerful this is or how much it will cost but It can run Zelda BotW NX so hopefully it is somewhat powerful.

So this is what I'm thinking. there should be at launch 2 docking stations:

1. base unit, just links to tv and lets the tegra chip work at full speed.
2. GPU unit, has a gpu inside to improve graphics performance.

All games must work in handheld, base and gpu improved mode.

in the future instead of releasing a mid-term console like the Neo and Scorpio they just release an upgraped gpu docking station.

Awesome , everything I bought on Wii U is useless again. Probably have to buy all my virtual console games for a 4th time.

I may be wrong on this, but I believe your Wii U will continue to function after the release of the NX. Re-buying any games is just for your convenience, not a requirement for you to continue playing them.

The handheld aspect seems odd and unnecessary to me

Is there not still a social stigma associated with playing handhelds in public?

I don't mean to ask that in any derogatory way, I'm genuinely curious. I know here in Miami, the quickest way to turn a girl off would be to walk around holding a 3DS

Skeptical of the idea but yes please to a portable with Tegra X1 or better. It should totally sweep what's left of Japan's market.

Nintendo's first party development for handhelds has been really lacking compared to their console games this gen. I'm worried what will happen when all games will be made with portable/mobile sensibilities in mind.

There is a dock, go read the article. Why wouldnt the device just have a hdmi out. Yall act like ya cant read all the sudden

Does a phone, tablet, or laptop dock turn said devices onto a desktop? No.

We literally don't know anything about the dock. If all it does is provide tv connectivity, this is still just the handheld successor, not a hybrid. If the dock adds processing power and nintendo does not have an upcoming dedicated home console, yes it's a hybrid.

We don't know that they don't have an upcoming dedicated home console that they have not yet announced. Hell, they still haven't announced this portable NX device and everyone is taking a eurogamer article with zero details on the dock as confirmation this is a hybrid.

Personally, if I wanted a powerful console, I already have 2 brand options and will also always have my PC. This thing being something different actually makes it more interesting and more likely that I will own it someday.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
I think Nintendo's new system would need to either be powerful enough to allow for ports of third-party games or be so cheap that people would buy it as a second console. I cannot imagine that an expensive console would sell well if it does not play all the major games that most gamers want to play.

As a consequence, given that NX' design does not sound like it will be able to handle big third-party games, Nintendo really needs to make it cheap. $200 sounds like the maximum they could get away with. And even that would be more than many people are willing to spend on a secondary gaming system.

So I won't expect any expensive hardware. The screen and the quality of the materials will probably be in the budget range. I also cannot imagine that they'd have enough budget left for gimmicks like a second GPU in the base station, large amounts of memory, and so on.

Genius. Let's hope Nintendo have thought this savvily this time.

I did a quick photoshop. To my understand NX concept is going to be somewhat like this? Of cause I am assuming the controller in the handheld form will not be like that, but somewhat more portable.

Thanks, this is a good visual of the concept. Should be in the OP.

What's unclear to me from the articles and I'm unsure as to whether I just missed it in there, but will all HH NX come with the base station, or will the HH also be sold separately?
