Eurogamer: NX = portable w/ carts, detachable controllers, Tegra, TV Out, no BC, Sept

It can if they stopped adding gimmicks. Look how much hype came from the NES re-release console coming this fall. People want it, they remember Nintendo.

Keep your message, and your console simple and people will flock to it. It's the reason Sony is doing so well. It's not complicated to wrap your head around.

Nintendo have this habbit of wanting to innovate hardware all the time, but by the time they do everything tech wise has already passed them. The Wii, DS I'll give you that were ahead of the curb. But releasing a hybrid will either sell like hot cakes depending on what it can do, or it will fizzle out.

People want the NES Mini because it's a $60 impulse buy that tugs on those nostalgia strings. Thinking you can translate that (and the success of Pokemon Go, while you're at it) into getting those same people to buy $200-300 home consoles is a good way completely miss the point of why the NES Mini and Pokemon Go were so successful in the first place. I hate to use this analogy again but it's like Marvel expecting all of those millions of people who watch Avengers in the theatre, and buy Iron Man t shirts and Captain America bobble heads to become hardcore comic fans/buyers again.

1. This is perfect

2. Something between WiiU and XB1 is perfectly fine

3. Assuming the dock has something of an extra chipset or RAM or whatever for upscaling purposes, which in turn would save power as it goes mobile

4. 'no XB1/PS4 ports?' doesn't bother me in the slightest and finally shows Nintendo is recognizing reality

5. biggest question is exactly how the detachable controllers fit in, and where -- on the mobile / screen portion or on the dock? my guess is on the dock since that's the only time they'd be needed

6. pricepoint guesses? mine: $299

7. launch titles? New Super Mario Bros. 3, Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

8. Will the mobile unit have touch?

9. Will the mobile unit have tilt? Will the controllers?

10. Guessing this means zero VR plans for now. Hmmmmm

11. Mini NES was absolutely a proof of concept about lack of BC. You'll have access to old games eventually.

holy shit this is a megaton.

I might be in day one then. especially if it's launching with a portable Zelda

*highfive*

Right there with you. I've been hoping for Nintendo to do something like this since before Wii U was announced. This is hype as fuck for me. My one hope is they can work in BC with digital Wii U games. I still want to play a handful of Wii U games but just can't justify spending over $200 for a dead console, not with being excited for NX.

edit: Also hoping for Micro SD support still for it.

I'm really surprised by the reactions here. I thought more people would be excited? A suped-up portable that you can attach to the TV as a console was always my dream as a kid.

Guess this also confirms that Nintendo will be porting some of the Wii U games to the NX.

I tweeted at Tom Phillips who confirmed that it is two detachable controllers and not just two halves of one whole controller.

This is the weirdest part to me.

El Capitan Todd
Im getting MAJOR supplemental computing device vibes from the "docking device."

I.e this patent

main_scd7vsrw.png

1 - Upscales the handheld games for TV
2 - Provides the power capable for home console only games.

EDIT: sorry if already disscused

if it will have this patent in, upgrading the console power for "tv sessions", I'll be more than happy about this move.
otherwise: it is a faked "brexit" from the home segment.

No bald cap? Lies!
I'm expecting 960x544 resolution just like the VITA with a 5 inch screen. That should way less power draw when used as a portable. They don't need to make the screen 720p.

That's what I'm thinking. Any screen over 5" is overkill in my opinion. Too large for a proper portable, too large a battery drain both from the screen and hardware to output at 720p.

~540p would be the sweet spot for a 4-5" screen. A huge improvement over the 3DS, but not a massive drain on battery.

So we are really getting a hyrbid system after all......very interesting news honestly. I wonder how games like Sonic 2017 and Breath of the Wild will work on the thing if it won't compare to the power of the PS4 or Xbox One.

Nintendo going all-in on handheld gaming with support for console gaming via TV out is a very smart move. Nintendo Handhelds are successful and get a lot of third party support and in addition to Nintendo going all in on one platform ensuring little to no game droughts could help this system a lot.

September being the announcement date for this isn't the worse move and if it is really launching early 2017, then it will help the hype for this be steady. Looking forward to learn more about this in the coming months.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Current question is what about buying multiple for a family if they only need one unit to hook up go through a TV but multiple for handheld purposes?

No, it makes it pretty clear that the dock is dumb and has no processor inside or anything like it.
The article is based on incomplete information and speculation. It doesn't make anything pretty clear. We won't know until September.

Super excited. There's no one like Nintendo in this industry. Sony and MS are both replaceable while Nintendo is completely unique, and that's what makes them so interesting. Don't really care too much about power, that's not what Nintendo is about anyway. A bit more powerful than Wii u sounds fine to me.

Maybe sell a disc drive add-on?
Or maybe sell some sort of a middle-piece that lets you connect your old Wii U to the NX?

Yep to keep it cheap , if you want more space will allow to connect external HD if you want WiiU BC will allow to connect external HDD.

You could custom NX at your wish and budget

Agreed!

I hope they struck an efficient balance in the design department

Will it have a touch screen?

Because if the screen part is what's docked when you use it as a console, that puts a damper on stuff like a Super Mario Maker port.

Also, I hope it'll be compatible with, say, the Wii U Pro controller instead of having to snap two small pieces of controller together when sitting on the couch while in "console" mode.

This is my dream. Being able to play all Nintendo games on a portable, and never having to play a Nintendo game on tv is a dream come true. Nothing else I can say except I have never hoped that a rumor was true so much before.

If its more powerful than WiiU I am terrified by the price tho lol.
Supposedly they got a very good deal with Tegra, one NX rumor

Guys, though... all of Nitnendo's new first party games... on one fucking console!

Consider the lineup we'd have had in 2013 if all their teams were releasing on one machine: (Note - includes Nintendo funded / published games)

Pikmin 3
Fire Emblem Awakening
Wonderful 101
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Game & Wario
Zelda Wind Waker HD
Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Super Mario 3D World
Pokemon X&Y
Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics
Lego City Undercover
NES Remix
Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
Dr. Luigi
Wii Sports Club
Mario Party Island Tour
Wii Fit U
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Wii Party U

Imagine a year like that - one ONE console! Holy shiiiiiiiiii....

Droughts? What droughts?

Somehow Nintendo's gonna fuck it all up

Can't wait to hear about how it looks like a fisher price toy and has a giant screen that's actually barely Vita resolution

This system is going to KILL in Japan which I am sure is the whole point of its design

It has the potential, especially considering Sony is abandoning the handheld gaming business, leaving this as the only option for JP software. That alone would drastically increase the big N's third party support problems of late.

I like the idea actually. Don't mind if it's less powerful since it's handheld. Still, it needs to be at least as powerful as Wiiu.

Now here's the real question: will it be region locked?

I don't get this question... If you want multiple portables you buy multiple portables, just like today with 3DS and Vita.

Do not listen to this man Nintendo. The WiiU has a 480P screen and it looks very low rez compared to modern tablets etc...

Please make it 1080p.

Consolidating 100% of Nintendo's developer output on one system is the key thing here.

The fact Nintendo was able to pretty much singlehandedly carry the 3DS and WiiU (even if individually those systems were poor performers, or at least the WiiU was) suggests that combining their output on one system should carry that system just fine, with or without third parties.

Nintendo can avoid dry spells just fine if its resources aren't split between two systems.

Yeah this is exciting, also no need to have the same franchises on both systems like Mario Kart 7 and 8 or New Super Mario Bros 2 or U. More room for everything else!

Who really cares anymore. Nintendo's games looked great in HD. And now they will only look better.

This isn't about Nintendo. The Wii U was a system almost exclusively supported by Nintendo games and we saw how that worked out for them. Heck, my Wii U library is over 90% Nintendo published titles. (Only Shovel Knight and a couple others are my 3rd party representation). Nintendo cannot support a console without significant reliance on 3rd parties. I would say to be successful, Nintendo needs at least 50% of all software sales to come from 3rd parties, otherwise they aren't doing a good enough job getting 3rd parties to their system. Its going to be yet another uphill climb if this system is still a generation behind XBONE and PS4

It is probably future proofing itself to support a SCD that power it up for VR.

If it's got decent giro chips and decent screen then there is no reason why this shouldn't have VR. Especially with detachable controllers.

"Nintendo Go" would probably confuse the public into thinking it has anything to do with Pokémon Go or mobile gaming. They didn't care about confusing people with 3DS, 2DS, WiiU, etc, but they would care about this.

Not really a problem if they get the NX to have some sort of link capability with their mobile apps. Like if you can transfer Pokemon Go Pokemon to Sun/Moon on an NX system or something.
