What would you want in a N64 Classic Mini Console?

So giving the recent announcement by Nintendo of the NES Classic Mini and the Nintendo Classic Mini series in the coming years a N64 Classic Mini may be in the card.
What do you think would be included or what would you like to be included in it in a hypothetical 30 games selection?

This is my list (a mix of Nintendo big franchises or games which have strong brandname behind them like Mortal Kombat or Rayman):

Super Mario 64
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask
Mario Kart 64
Wave Race 64
1080 Snowboarding
Pilotwings 64
Star Fox 64
F- Zero X
Kirby 64
Paper Mario
Mario Party 2
Mario Tennis
Yoshi's Story
Super Smash Bros
Pokemon Puzzle League
Pokemon Snap
Excitebike 64
Donkey Kong 64
Banjo Kazooie or Diddy Kong Racing
Star Wars Episode I: Racer or Star Wars Rogue Squadron
Mortal Kombat 4
Ridge Racer 64
Resident Evil 2
Rayman 2
Doom 64
Bomberman 64
Harvest Moon 64
Castlevania Legacy of Darkness
Ogre Battle 64

---

Getting exactly 30 games was harder than many think because N64 had some worthwhile games from third-party and a few of them still have strong brandname.

Third-party games I would like but I think they are unlikely to make the cut:

Rocket Robot on Wheels (unlikely)
International Superstar Soccer 2000 (well americans...)
Mischief Makers (surprise me Nintendo, prove me wrong !!)
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (surprise me Nintendo, prove me wrong !!)
Shadow Man (unlikely)
Hybrid Heaven (totally impossible)
Sin & Punishment (I very doubt that Nintendo will include a game never released outside Japan on the original console for this kind of initiative)

I think as far as first-party games goes (sans games whose IPs are owned by Microsoft/Rare or Star Wars games owned by Disney) it is almost definitive.
Third-party games is a toss but iconic franchises like Resident Evil, Ridge Racer, Castlevania, Bomberman, Harvest Moon, Mortal Kombat, Doom, Rayman have a good chance to appear if publishers agree on the fees (and emulation isn't a problem).
Also I wonder if Nintendo 64 more western nature mean we will get more third-party games from western publisher and very little from japanese ones (more Turok etc. ?).

It'd be quite a hurdle to overcome, but they shouldn't bother unless they can somehow get Goldeneye on it. I'm sure they could do it if they really wanted to.

Just going on your list, I think it's pretty good but I think more Rare games should be on it. Cruis'n USA is another one that should probably be on there. As crappy as it is, it's a fairly iconic game on the system. NFL Blitz 2000 and WWF No Mercy would probably be impossible to get on there, so I could understand passing on those.

You'd have to get all the Star Wars games. Don't leave out Shadow of the empire

Also Mario Party is far superior to Mario Party 2

I have a feeling such a mini console would have 20 games or less on it for the same price.

Either way, if such a thing had Pilotwings 64 or Goemon on it I'd be there day 1.

Without Rare games, you'd have a major chunk of the library missing.

I think the modern Microsoft would be easy to work with to make it happen, though. I don't see them blocking a standard third-party deal out of platform-holder spite.

The real issue for Goldeneye, though, is not Rare. It's the Bond license....

They're never going to release untouched Mario Party 1 again.

Bundle it with gloves!

Mario 64
1080 Snowboarding
Diddy Kong Racing
Wave Race
Tetrisphere
Fighters Destiny
Ocarina of Time
Goldeneye
Worms Armageddon
Snowboard Kids
Doom 64
Rogue Squadron
Pokemon Stadium
Hybrid Heaven
Castlevania 64

Maybe a sports title or 2? There was Intenational Superstar Soccer which while incredible might not do much for an American audience. Was there a Mario Tennis or tennis game in general?

Lylat Wars
Banjo Kazooie
F-Zero.

18 games listed. 2 sports titles I don't know and that would be a nice round 20.

There would not be 30 N64 games included.

15 is a more realistic number.

I'd say, to the world at large, N64 games are hardly more valuable than NES games at this point in time. They're both equally old as dirt to anyone under 20.

That doesn't mean Nintendo won't spin them as having more value, though. And there's also the fact that the N64 library is much smaller than the NES one. So you might still be right.

15 spots aren't even enough to host all the Nintendo iconic franchises.

Indeed.
The american market is why I left out ISS 2000 from my list despite being very good.

Another awesome game which has no chance to be chosen is Micro Machines 64.

I'd see them doing Diddy Kong Racing over Banjo-Kazooie for sure.

And if it did have DKR I'd pay full price JUST for that game and everything else would be a bonus.

Would it use original N64 controllers or would they make new ones that would plug into the Wio Remotes for Virtual Console games? Weren't they rumored to be doing that anyway but it never happened?

Edit: I could see them doing 2, a black system "Volume 1" with 15 games and then a clear Play It Loud "Volume 2" version with 15 more games.

I wonder if Microsoft would allow Banjo in such a collection, I mean it would raise brand awareness and they've said in the past that they're open to Nintendo putting Rare games on the Virtual Console. I imagine that's just friendly PR.

I would like Doom 64, Resident Evil 2 but I imagine the mature titles would ruin the appeal for children.

Yeah, I don't think M-rated games would fly for retailers.

First I'm not fond of the NES mini.

Second, the N64? The problem is multiplayer games... how would this work on a N64 mini. Like having to buy 3 N64 mini controllers?

NES and SNES mini OK, but N64 games should remain a NX Virtual Console asset.

Supposedly all they'd have to do is let Microsoft release it on Xbox.

The game is jointly owned by Nintendo and Microsoft (via Rare) and neither can do anything with the other's approval. Apparently MS tried to release it on 360, and approached Nintendo with a deal where it would release on XBLA and the Virtual Console on the same day. Nintendo refused because they consider it a Nintendo game.

Also you need Micheif Makers on that list

It was published by Nintendo back in the day (probably Enix in Japan). So I could see this being easy, since it's pretty much the same deal as Final Fantasy 1 (published by Nintendo in America and Square back in the day), which is on the NES mini.

It's a shame some games will never see releases on virtual console or mini console because of licensing, or if the publisher doesn't exist anymore, or they don't own those IP anymore. As time goes on this will be harder still. We are likely to see only 1st party games and maybe one or two third party games on a N64 mini.

Super Mario 64
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Lylatwars
Kirby 64
Super Smash Bros.
Sin & Punishment
Mischief Makers
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber
F-Zero X
Wave Race 64
Harvest Moon 64
Pokemon Snap
Rayman 2: The Great Escape
DOOM 64
Excitebike 64
Mario Tennis
Mario Golf
Paper Mario
Snowboard Kids
Pilotwings 64

That'd be the best possible mix from the N64's tiny catalogue (ignoring licensed/Rare stuff for obvious reasons).

Well to be fair, we only saw one or two third party games on the actual N64.

har har.

You are probably right although I believe a big part of who will buy these devices will be old enough, even if they intend to buy for their nephews or children they will probably gloss over the rating because they already know the games.
I included Doom, Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat because they still have huge brandname behind them so they would increase the iconic offerings.

Super Mario 64
Zelda Ocarina of Time
Zelda Majora's Mask
Paper Mario
F-Zero X
Donkey Kong 64
Mario Kart 64
Excitebike 64
Starfox 64

Wave Race 64
Mischief Makers
Hybrid Heaven
Yoshi's Story
Mario Party
Mario Party 2
Mario Party 3
Resident Evil 2
Super Smash Bros.
Pokémon Puzzle League
Pokémon Snap
Snowboard Kids
Harvest Moon 64
Castlevania - Legacy of Darkness
MegaMan 64
Tetrisphere
Mario Tennis
Kirby 64
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Pilotwings 64

It's actually pretty hard coming up with 30 titles that are not impossible (like Perfect Dark or WWE No Mercy) or very unlikely (everything Star Wars).
A N64 mini would be mostly Nintendo titles, though. The N64 was a decent console, but many things didn't age so well.
A GameCube mini would make things easier again, I guess.

I quite like it.

What didn't you find right about it?

They were probably not holding it the way it's supposed to.
(Left hand in the middle, right hand on the right. Almost no game made use of the d-pad and L-button on N64)

I don't think it would work.

There's way too many games by Rare that would never be able to make it on the mini.

I don't care if they fill it with all of the Nintendo first party releases, without Rare no one's happy, therefore no N64 Mini.

Ship it with a gamecube controller.

Besides that If it only had 4 to 5 of the best games, but they were emulated and played perfectly. Then i would be in.

I'd want the ability to disable AA like those recent N64 hacks.

Otherwise just give me Goemon 2 and Mario 64

I follow your rule about licensing issues OP so all Rare games except Donkey Kong games are out, which is obviously a huge lack.
Star Wars games are also out I guess. The Spider-man game would have been great too.

  1. Super Mario 64
  2. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time
  3. The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask
  4. Mario Kart 64
  5. Wave Race 64
  6. 1080 Snowboarding
  7. Star Fox 64
  8. F-Zero X
  9. Kirby 64
  10. Paper Mario
  11. Mario Party 2
  12. Mario Tennis
  13. Super Smash Bros
  14. Pokemon Puzzle League
  15. Pokemon Snap
  16. Donkey Kong 64

Why do you think the Star Wars games on N64 are very unlikely?
Nintendo was the original publisher for those games and all Nintendo has to do is to find an agreement with Disney for the license.

Yeah I think it's easily possible too.

I mean they just re-released the Super Star Wars games on PS4, which makes next to no sense, but it shows people at Lucas-Disney are open to re-releasing old content.

They wont be doing this.

Based on what?

At this point I'd actually call it inevitable.

Whether it's next year, two years from now... or 5-10 years from now. It will happen, unless the NES mini is some kind of bomb (lol).

Mario 64
Ocarina of Time
Majora's Mask
Goldeneye
Diddy Kong Racing
Mario Kart 64
Banjo Kazooie
Star Fox 64
Wave Race 64
WCW vs NWO Revenge

Keep it to 10 and sort out the licensing issues for a few of them...

I find it unlikely because in my eyes Disney seems to phase out everything they deemed non-canon. Just my personal opinion, though.

Goldeneye
Jet force Gemini
Perfect Dark
Wave Race
Cruisin USA
1080
San francisco rush
Mario 64
Mario Kart
War Gods
Pilotwings
Beatle adventure racing
Shadowman
Shadows of the Empire
Ocarnia of Time

Anybody saying Banjo-Kazooie is delusional. Microsoft own that. Diddy Kong Racing also wouldn't have a chance unless Banjo and Conker were removed (I would also have said Tiptup, had he not survived the cut in the DS port).

They're never going to release untouched Mario Party 1 again.

Which is infuriating, as the rubber sticks on Wii/Wii U controllers mean it would be fine. Also, I don't see why they couldn't have simply replaced joystick rotations for the games that required them with button presses. Hardy a monumental task, especially considering they went out of their way to implement Wii photo functionality into Pokemon Snap.

Microsoft has no reason to deny Nintendo access to Rare's catalogue if they're willing to put up the money.

Brand recognition.

Banjo, Joanna Dark, etc are all now Microsoft's property, and Microsoft didn't buy them all just so Nintendo could continue profiting from them/associating with them unless we're talking about a stupidly high, unrealistic amount of money. So there's no point in even entertaining it as a possibility.

My list of 30 would be:

FIRST PARTY

Super Mario 64
Paper Mario
Mario Kart 64
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Mario Party
Mario Party 2
Mario Party 3
Dr. Mario 64
Yoshi's Story
Donkey Kong 64
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Pokemon Snap
Pokemon Puzzle League
Starfox 64 / Lylat Wars
Super Smash. Bros.
F-Zero X
Pilotwings 64
1080 Snowboarding
Waverace 64

THIRD PARTY

Snowboard Kids
Snowboard Kids 2
Mischief Makers
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Goemon's Great Adventure / Mystical Ninja 2: Starring Goemon
Tetrisphere
Harvest Moon 64
Space Station Silicon Valley

Some of the third-party ones are probably wishful thinking though.

If it were cut to 20 (which would be understandable), then my list would be:

FIRST PARTY

Super Mario 64
Paper Mario
Mario Kart 64
Mario Golf
Mario Tennis
Mario Party
Yoshi's Story
Donkey Kong 64
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Pokemon Snap
Starfox 64 / Lylat Wars
Super Smash. Bros.
F-Zero X
Pilotwings 64

THIRD PARTY

Snowboard Kids
Mischief Makers
Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
Harvest Moon 64

I can see that if you're thinking of classic Disney licensed games... It doesn't seem like re-releasing NES Rescue Rangers or SNES Goof Troop is likely.

Everything with the Lucas catalog says otherwise though.

The fact that we have Grim Fandango HD, Day of the Tentacle HD and the Super Star Wars Trilogy on PS4 shows that someone at Lucas/Disney is unusually cooperative about legacy content.

Anybody saying Banjo-Kazooie is delusional. Microsoft own that. Diddy Kong Racing also wouldn't have a chance unless Banjo and Conker were removed (I would also have said Tiptup, had he not survived the cut in the DS port).
Let's remember that Microsoft just published a special version of Minecraft on Wii U, with Mario-centric content. MS and Nintendo just worked closely together.

The hard divisions between console holders aren't necessarily as strong as people think... If the right regime is in charge, they'll reach across the aisle to make some money and cross promote each others' brands.
