Will you be able to play with your friends?

is a fundamentally different question to

Is it possible to see another player character in your game in realtime?

The first question - the one in the gif - has many interpretations. Being able to play in the same universe, on one couch, etc. Yes, it's dumb but that's how it is.

Watch Colbert's interview at around 0:10

He says, yes it's possible to see others

the mental gymnastics in this thread would win a gold at Rio.

They'll miss those couple of hundred sales
Instead of missing a couple of thousand sales. That's the point. That's why they keep quiet during the critical release phase.

Too bad they are going to pay with a good chunk of their reputation instead.

Sean Murray should run for an elected office if we are accepting the fact that you can interpret questions multiple way as a reason for why he did not deny in-game multiplayer.

Either that or he should be in Rio winning Gold

If the planets are procedurally generated, it was impossible for this game to be multiplayer. Only way they could have done it is with players being in separate instancing that shared info at that point, but not entire universe being generated by all players at the same time.

You're not remotely understanding how this game works.

New question:

Since we can apparently start closer to one another than we thought possible, if you don't start playing the game until like 2017, is there a chance someone could discover/name your starting planets before you get a chance to yourself?

Because, it would suck if planets/creatures in your first few solar systems are already named by nearby players.

Already happened

One time I downloaded a torrent, it was so nice to have met all of those people.

Anyone else have heartwarming memories of meeting other people online?

The planets aren't actively being procedurally generated... the seed has been hatched, they are already generated; everyones game has the same exact planets. All 18 quintillion of them.

But he said you can see each others characters as well as grief each other in game.

Oh come on.

I think they'll work on it after the next patch is done, the game needs it. If not, it's a missed opportunity and a major disappointment. Or maybe it is indeed a server issue, which seems more likely considering Sean's reaction on twitter.

After seeing the sticker on those boxes and the last minute "it's single player, guys" tweet; it seems they haven't even implemented seeing other people in the game yet. Or they have no intention to, period.

Which is a pretty shitty thing to tell people the day before your game comes out.

When was the earliest announcement that you wouldn't need PS+ to play the game?

If it was a while back, then logic would say that's when people should have thrown up flags and freaked out like they are now since MP isn't possible without PS+.

It seems most people knew it didn't require PS+, but news sites had a slow news day recently and reiterated the news.

FAKE EDIT:
Some quick checks show many saying it's not as of a year ago:

My guess is they were working on it and came to the conclusion at the last minute that it wasn't ready for release.

I guess we shall see.

Guys I'm not defending that and neither saying it was meant this way.

Just that it would not be first time anybody did this.

This is just the lawyer speaking.

As I said earlier: he looks very reluctant and uncomfortable when giving answers about the MP. Same with how he delivered the "little bit" line afterwards about the griefing. Almost as if he knows he is bullshitting.
By griefing, he probably means you can rename your friend's planet to something that will piss them off.

No. NMS has online multiplayer like how Final Fantasy on NES has online multiplayer simply because people can visit the same places.

Hey guys, anyone up for some Witcher 3 mutliplayer? Let's meet up in White Orchard.

Tremendous. And brutal. But totally on point good sir!

I think I'll play me some Chrono Trigger multiplayer tonight. I'll call up my buddy, put him on speaker phone, and tell him to meet me in game, and we can spiritually fight Lavos together!

Why is this thread 78 pages? What did I miss? So can you see other people in the game or not? :)

Not.

Where are you? I can't see you.

I always though the chance of someone landing onto a planet you were on and seeing them mining about would have been really cool. I suppose it will just have to stay in my imagination.

I get it from your POV. You are explaining how others can view the situation and not your personal one.

WHAT!!!

Now THAT pisses me off.

If someone can NINJA TAG your own damn starting planet, on DAY FUCKING 1, then I have a problem.

Screw MEETING someone face-to-face. I personally wanted to RENAME my way to the center of the galaxy. THAT was most assuredly a HUGE feature I wanted for myself.

18 quintillion planets... astronomical chances of finding other people or their discoveries.

...ON DAY ONE?!?!?!?!

I'm slowly creeping to the "WTF Sean???" side all of a sudden...

I'm procedurally generating anger. This is not good. Need coffee STAT!

So, then why hasn't Sean and HG simply said this from the beginning?

We now have multiple streams showing that it is impossible to see other players in game, and we have packet monitors that prove position data is not transmitted in game, so we now know definitively that NMS is a single player game with an online universe of names for objects.

So why the obscurity about that all of these years? Why not just say that from the start so that expectations were in line all the way? Why be so coy and unspecific about whether or not we can meet people in game, or play with friends? I don't get the need to be secretive about a key feature of the game, that only serves to deceive and upset people in the end and it certainly hasn't added any value to the release impressions or buzz.

Very poor marketing decisions from Sean and gang on this topic. Very poor.

I'm getting the sense that Sean is taken aback that he had to clarify the issue this close to launch. As if he thought he had more time, even infinite time, to tease players with the carrot on a stick of one day stumbling across another traveler, to keep that mystery alive.

As if players weren't going to sniff out the net code and just use communication outside the game to arrange meetups that are otherwise impossible using just the game's tools.

I know that he's said that it was going to be a rare event and that it was meant as a SP experience, but once the game is in gamers' hands that's not really his call anymore.

Some people need to really calm down. On the cover of the box, it is advertised as a single player.

Nope. The dev has said repeatedly that you will be able to play this game as in a multiplayer mode. He has said you'll even be able to grief other players.

So no. We will not calm down until this mess is sorted out.

This is fucking legendary.

This is going down in the NeoGAF history books.

It's a valid question. A game where you have no way of even looking at a map will require copious amounts of work to... see each other? What's in that? It's never been what the game's been about, and while I agree that the vague "well, there's a kind of multiplayer, but we don't want to spoil it" might have had us think we'd be able to see each other, it's a perfectly valid question to ask what you feel is missing from the game, besides being able to see each other.
