A polite discourse amongst friends on the importance of MP-elements in No Man's Sky

It's a valid question. A game where you have no way of even looking at a map will require copious amounts of work to... see each other? What's in that? It's never been what the game's been about, and while I agree that the vague "well, there's a kind of multiplayer, but we don't want to spoil it" might have had us think we'd be able to see each other, it's a perfectly valid question to ask what you feel is missing from the game, besides being able to see each other.

Thank you

Why did they cover it up then?

Guys.

You can play with other people....just not online.

Thread is A+ material, bunch of lunatics in here. If nothing else it sure has been fun watching people make idiots of themselves.

I'm thinking no multiplayer since there is no PS+ requirement.

I don't really understand why people are defending the devs here. You can like the devs and admit that they fucked up the messaging on this issue, which they clearly did.

Nobody would've thought you couldn't see other players prior to release based on what we were told by the dev team. We were made to believe it was unlikely but possible.

It turns out it's, as of right now, not possible.

By saying "A little bit" he meant that you could name planets "Poop" and someone might potentially see that planet.

Hey, I landed on planet Poop today! Then I went to its moon "Balls". I am not happy with the guy who's discovered many of the systems I'm in.

Im going with the theory they wanted to stealth patch stuff in later on the thought this would not happen for some weeks.

its kind of interesting how angry people are getting over this when you've got something like the pendant in dark souls 1
in ds it just inspired people to dig into the game and figure out stuff
but in nms's case everyone is just calling them liars because they've been super vague about stuff. maybe they just want people to dig in more and theres a reason?
i dont know

the 2 players that ran into each other were clearly there at different times of day. maybe there's time travel in the game because of all the lightspeed flying? or alternate dimensions. i dont know. this just makes me curious, instead of upset

I'd love an answer to all this, but man do I wish like hell we lived in a universe where people had even a modicum of patience while waiting and didn't resort to flipping their shit immediately.

What is it with the ridiculous comparisons? Players were hoping the pendant does something. It was a red herring in the end. No big deal. No Man's Sky lacks functionality that many players expected to be part of the game.

Wow...

Maybe we should get that chalk board out and add "time travel" and "alternate dimensions" to the things that explain NMS' non-working MP.

Seek victory, not fairness
When the servers are up (and you can tell even in game as it tells you in the options menu) absolutely 0 packets are sent when you fly or walk around. It's going to be easier for more people to do packet capture of PC so expect more people to notice, but if you have a PS4 plug it into a box running Wireshark and start dumping the data. There's no netcode for 'pal around with friends'.

This one sealed the deal for me. I'm just waiting to see how they handle it from here.

Haha, this is a great way of putting just how hyperbolic this entire thread is. We have a perfectly functioning game wherein multiplayer is barely feasible, even if it did currently work or was implemented or whatever the case might be, but here you have people flipping their shits for four thousand posts about how people have been lying. Can we just all relax? The game is 100% functional. It's a great game. The fuck are we upset about? Not being able to see each other currently?

How can anybody deny that this was a blatant lie by Hello Games and Sean Murray? I don't think people understand how much cooler this universe is when there is the slim chance of running into somebody.
