Discoveries possibly not being saved in No Man's Sky

I stepped off my spaceship and looked around. It was an unnamed planet but felt all too familiar. The gravity felt the same as that planet I had once visited but that's just because every planet's gravity is the same in this game.

As I walked around, I spotted an animal I recognized. It was unnamed. "Wow. Independent origins of life have created the same animal," I thought. "This is huge for the scientific community."
Then when you realized where you were, that is when things really went to shit.

Well, people are discovering other people's planets with named discoveries. I wonder if it has anything to do with the server issues in the first couple of weeks.

Thinking this
Also wondering if they were connected when discovering or after the fact or even at all.

Damn NeoGAF is super toxic these days. Shit posting all over the damn place.

Instead of reading comments, people are just jumping on this shitpost bandwagon and running away with it.

What are some of the shit posts that are inaccurate bc the poster didn't read comments?

Get on the hate page man it always happens when a game has backlash like this it becomes cool to insult instead reading.

Just checked mine all up even after server issues had first day

Not OP but if you cannot see the blatant shitposting that goes on in some.... most of these threads then there's no helping you.

Example right above me

But you implied if a poster simply read the comments they wouldn't have shit posted. The post above you seems fairly accurate. I doubt his/her opinion would change had they read the comments.

that's not a shitpost, that's fact.

it is fundamentally flawed and broken, so that makes it a disaster.

Honestly I would hope people would put 2 and 2 together from reading that most likely from Server issues.
They were down most that first week. Nothing got uploaded unless it popped up online real quick.
I monitored the status in my Discoveries page for periods of time.

Also the fact people do have theirs still uploaded makes this all a bunch of SERVER ISSUES

that's not a shitpost, that's fact.

Was this thread talking about just in general? No it was addressing an issue SOME people have ran into

Smells faintly of rancid stilton.
"There is a non buggy version of the game, but the chances of playing it are so slim it may never happen!"
They make so hard to return to your starting planet, my guess with zillions of planets to explore they never thought anyone would attempt to return to the starting planet. Much like they thought people wouldn't attempt to find each other the first few hours.
It not Hello Games fault, game development is hard and stress full. Will people just leave this poor independent developer alone.....

Dude has gone full Crossing Eden for this game.

I resent that!

jk lvu Eden if ur reading

*swoops back into thread*

"... So you guys are all exaggerating this!"

I'm 230 planets and 74 star systems in, went back to my first planet, everything was still uploaded and discovered like it should be.

What I suspect happens is that the server is what keeps track of all the planets you've discovered and doesn't endlessly save it locally to keep the filesize down (especially on PS4 I can see that being important)

However, early at launch the servers were hammered so some might not have gone through.

That'll be it.

I can't wait until 2 weeks later we discover that planets are also faked and the game isn't even really a game, just an elaborate animated gif.

And one month later it turns out the .GIF was actually just a really long SnapChat and you lose it forever

As mentioned elsewhere, the servers were down pretty much the entire first week, perhaps longer.

Chances are nothing you uploaded from then will be present.

Hiya!

When the first thread was made about people not being able to see each other, here are some of the posts from the first few pages:

This could be server problems, let's not make definitive statements.

Certainly not a great sign though

I thought I read that you couldn't? Is there a source to a quote where he says you can?

I thought they strongly emphasized multiplayer was never really a thing.

I mean, if there's a 0.01% chance to encounter another player, then it wouldn't be worth investing in the multiplayer infrastructure to allow players to meet.

Pretty sure he had said that you shouldn't expect a multiplayer experience months ago, but hype blinded people.

What's also possible is that currently it's bugged and doesn't properly put people in the lobby as he explained it before.
Or it could just be servers overloaded because day 1?

I'm not going to draw the conclusion yet it's simply not in the game. A bit too prematurely imo.

Yeah, they never confirmed that you could. People assumed.

I'm sorry but that's on them. It's never been advertised and only addressed when the question was brought up.

Why would something that has a 0.00001% chance of occurring be a big selling point to any reasonable person?

The box even just says "Single Player

Someone in the OT said one of them had NAT type 3 so that could explain why they never saw each other.

For some reason, people feel a need to immediately rush to Hello Games' defense rather than question whether a feature is working properly or not.

Also if this is a server issue, isn't that a big fucking problem too? Didn't they say you could play offline and that your discoveries would be uploaded when you got online?

Anybody thinking we're never going to hear from this guy again?

Sure. Likely through posts regarding game updates. Probably not so much in terms of interviews or other media appearances, at least not in the near term. Anybody out there spoiling for a message board yell-fest with someone from HG will likely just have to keep screaming into the voice however. I don't think we're going to see any AMAs in the future. Which is fine honestly. It'd just be a waste of time when they could be working on the game.

Question: If you were to play entirely offline, does it record/store your discoveries locally? I know you can still "upload" them for the credit, but does it actually save anything?

I don't know where it stores things, you'd have to ask the PC crowd, but I can confirm that I played 72 hours offline across two systems and multiple planets, and my discoveries-- particularly flora, fauna, and waypoints-- were all still there, so the data was getting saved somewhere.

Can the negative threads be considered User Generated Content?

Every tantrum procedural

Two patches released and it is still constantly crashing,if that is not a disaster, what is. I will not even get into Sean's lies.

Well, yeah, but we didn't have posts like this:

That's like having a post saying "Hey, on the first day I met my mate, too, and we were both standing there. It works fine." IIRC nobody said anything like that back then?

Also if this is a server issue, isn't that a big fucking problem too? Didn't they say you could play offline and that your discoveries would be uploaded when you got online?

Yeah, it's pretty fucking shit. I'm not defending that. Never did! (Edit: though evidently for some people it has uploaded retrospectively, so who knows.)

Now I'm away for a weekend of Edinburgh Fringe Festival debauchery.

Have a wonderful time, chaps.

Because the amount of threads, time and effort taken to continue to go after this game is like really strange.

Shit, I don't think even Watch Dogs had it's backlash last as long as this, it's been two weeks and people are still making threads about shit is most likely not even the developers fault.

This entire fiasco is fucking strange, but I kinda understand it. It's kinda like that scene in the show Billions, where one character explains that the public loves a coming up story, but will instantly turn on that same person because the public loves a fall from grace story just as much.

Ive been on a planet that had named animals and plants but the system or planet itself wasnt na,ed.

So obviously this feature is working but probably has server issues as i always appear offline.

Would make sense why in only ever came across 2 or 3 systems already discovered by someone else in 40 some hours of playtime. Those were also early on in the Atlas path, so I probably got there soon after that player discovered them and they hadn't gotten wiped yet.

Yes it is strange that developer can lie up until a few months before a game is released and public turn on said developer...

I've come across that many times. You can "discover" something locally i.e. get there first, but if you don't connect online and upload your discovery someone else can swoop in and get the naming credit. I definitely named systems that already had planets named, or named a planet that had 50% of its fauna discovered and named, etc...

I used to think that this type of massive lies can only be achieved by AAA big ass publishers/developers but it's sad that now this has starting to reach indie developers as well : /

It was bound to find its way into the Indie scene eventually

The game is kelly bundy. It can only learn so much at one time! Learn one new thing and the old thing gets forced out.

I don't think that's a fair comparison. Kelly Bundy started as someone who was reasonably savvy despite her poor book smarts and used a lot of snarky humour. Then she got dumber and more cartoonish as time went on. Did No Man's Sky get downgraded?

Is it a stretch that Sean lied about certain aspects in this game, this may just be another one of his lies.

But it isn't as proven by those of us who still have them there.
This isn't a lie
This isn't about crashes
This thread was addressing what some people found in their own games that wont applies to everyone.
