WSJ: NX to use carts. Analysts have said an announcement could be prior to TGS

When will Nintendo unveil the NX?

So..with games going at 50 GB and even pushing that further with hard disk installs. Where does that leave the NX?
I don't think it would be much a problem. DS cards were 8-512 MB, 3DS are 128MB-8GB. Extrapolating very simply from that, I would've guessed their next portable would have card sizes from 2GB-128GB, so NX should match or exceed that. And given this is not a regular portable necessarily following regular portable pricing for games, I wouldn't think all launch games need necessarily be at the low end as was the case for DS and 3DS.

128 GB NX game cards are not happening and frankly, not needed. 64 GB is already an expensive stretch that may be too costly.

128 GB is unlikely any time soon, though if the NX lasts 5 years it might be viable for late gen titles.

Earlier rumors suggested a 32 GB cart would be standard, and 32 GB is roughly 2/3rds the size of the Blu-Rays Sony and Microsoft use.

2/3rds is significantly better than the ~1/20th the average 32 MB N64 was compared to a PS1 CD, so I don't think those comparisons are in line. Hell, even the beloved Gamecube's miniDVDs were like 1/7th the storage of a PS2 DVD.

A real shame. There is a warmth you get when playing a game off a disc that you can't really replicate with flash based storage.

I feel no warmth towards drive noise and high load times. Part of the reason I'm almost entirely digital this gen.

If by "warmth" you mean the heat generated by moving parts, then yes.

If not, then what are you talking about?!

I wonder if they are going to opt for 3DS-sized cases or Wii Up-sized ones. Or somewhere in between?

I'd personally like to see something as tall (short) as the 3DS cases and as wide (narrow) as the PSP cases.

If they aren't even going to put physical manuals in the box anymore, and they aren't going to use discs, there's no need for a full-size case.

Having it before TGS but after Sony's reveal would be smart. Give Sony a week of mind share and then hijack the news cycle right before they get to show off the goods.

Yet Angel Studios, with the help of Factor 5, could make the entire two campaigns of Resident Evil 2 with all FMV's and voices on a 64 Mb N64 cartdrige.

But they should be putting physical manuals in the cases :p. I do miss those.

The amount of people taking that post seriously is simultaneously amusing and worrying.

Tbh, it doesn't sound like something someone wouldn't say lol, which is part of why it works as satire.

64MB, not 64 Mb (only very early titles like Mario 64 used 64Mb/8MB carts) but yes. RE2 was one of very few titles to use a 64 MB cart, and even that was only ~1/10th of a CD.

The N64 was really hamstrung by tiny file sizes, which minimized its ability to take advantage of its edge over the PS1 in other fields.

Ugh, I would love this. But too easy to lose smaller carts. BUT it would be really cool if the cases were modeled after NES or SNES carts... Just able to be opened to get at the real cart.
It would be funny if Nintendo flooded retail shelves with $5-10 retro games. Just look at that expansive, value-based library!

There is a joke about how really good are Nintendo compression tools. If there is someone who care about the memory management and how improve it to avoid game with a bloat of data, ironically is Nintendo.

I'm sure Nintendo NX data game is not going to be a problem.

That was amazing but don't forget that the audio in the FMVs sounded like they were coming out of an empty tin can. Still amazing though.

People keep saying that they don't use discs any more, because they download games on PS4/Xbox One.

Do me a favour, remove your HDD from your console, unscrew it from the enclosure, and look to see what your data is actually stored on.

It's a disc. It's been a disc all along.

Of course you haven't noticed the lack of warmth, even if you downloaded your game, it's still being played off a disc.

You'll only notice the change when you switch over to flash based storage.

You can even look up reports from people who use an SSD in their PS4.

I love the feel of paper, but honestly I'd rather they make a really nice digital manual experience that looks great on high-res screens and is really intuitive to navigate.

Yeah, you have a point. Frankly if NX doesn't use discs or is over $149, it's a no buy from me. I wish Nintendo still made hardware for the gamers, but I guess they're fine with exchanging the warmth of a nice disc for a couple of amiibo sales, smh

You do realize that everyone who plays video games in their free time is a "gamer," right? And that increasingly the expectation is for media content to be available on devices that aren't your TV, even when you're away from home?

Again, you can't use a disc for a hybrid device that's meant to be portable (see the PSP).

The cartridge need to be bigger enough to show the cover art well. This will help people to put more value in buying the cartridges.

Vita cartridges are awful. Far away from being the main problem with the system, but not helped anyway.

NX games won't be as big as PS4/XBO games anyway. They are primarily targeting 720p and they won't have as much RAM so textures should be smaller.

So no sale unless it's cheaper than a second hand PS3 from gamestop?

Realistic expectations.

Yes, sorry. In France, we use Mo instead of MB (Mega Octets), I'm always confused in English between MB and Mb.

Well sure I wouldn't expect them at launch. But it would be an extremely weird generation for a cart/card machine to never get cards that more than doubled the size of launch games.

Not reasonable at all. Discs are apparently not needed anymore for Nintendo's use and that price has zero chance of happening.

I have a feeling that Nintendo will just randomly in the next two weeks announce "NX Direct tomorrow". There won't be leaks because they're not going to send anything to the press ahead of time. I really hope it's going to happen soon.

I love the fact that the system will use cartridges. In my eyes this retains the value of games much longer, and adds to the collectability.

What what's been rumored I feel Nintendo is going back to its basics. An electronic toy to be enjoyed in company.

That day... oh man the hype and craziness. I do think it's only a week or two away.

could happen down the line. 3DS started off at 2 gigs and smash was 8 gigs iirc.

No, Smash was 1.2 GB and on a 2 GB card.

http://nintendonews.com/news/3ds/smash-bros-3ds-dlc-download-card/

No 3DS game has used an 8 GB card, and few have been 4 GB. It's relatively expensive. That's why 32 GB is probably the limit for the NX's gen anyways.

Follow the quotes. That post is agreeing with one that's rationalizing a joke post. Either you're responding to joke post or a raving lunatic.

Oh, I see.
