Persona 5 Famitsu Review Score: 39/40 (10/10/10/9)

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I hope 40 hrs of cutscenes that will make us incredibly attached to the characters.

And when the game ends, we roll around the bed thinking why the game is done and how much we want more.

Sounds a little too long honestly. Like, a single player game should not be 80h long. It took me 55-60h for Xenoblade, 65h for P5, 80h for P3 but please no longer than that. If anything, ~50h tends to be a really good length.

Persona 3 and 4 were ridiculously long if you bothered with most things... this seems in line with them. I don't see why this is surprising, I'd be worried if it was any lower

If I can beat P5 in 80 hours that would make it shorter than P4 for me.

Of course in a game like that I imagine play time varies per person quite a bit. I would not be surprised if P5 takes me over 100.

Will there be another Japanese reviews soon?

Only 80 Hours? they probably didn't play a lot of side content.

It took me around 80 hours to beat P3 and 4 for the first time so it's about right I guess.

P4G might still be longer than 5 just because of extra character/days/dungeon etc.

I still remember the huge cognitive dissonance I felt at the end of Persona 4...

I have to wonder, do Famitsu reviews get treated with the same suspicion and derision in Japan that they do in the west?

They do know how suspect they are right?

So do Famitsu scores matter now or not?
I'm confused with the reactions here depending on the scores.
partly joking

The OP says themselves that they're worthless on review value. That said, Famitsu is a big enough name for reference and a review is a review. If it were a middling score for Persona 5, I'm pretty sure we'd still have a thread.

I know you were speaking more of posters, but there will always be some excited over any high numbers for an anticipated title.

They got me last time, but not this time!

I have returned better and stronger. Through the ringer with you, Persona 5!

There's always the one mini game that will add 20 hours. Fishing in persona 4 was that for me. I can see myself doing 80 hours, only question is how long will it take me to jump back into new game plus.

I'm all for games that respect the player's time.

But if P5 is anything like P4, 80 hours sounds great to me. Gives you a chance to really sink into the world and live w/ the characters for a nice long while. That was the greatest success of 4 to me, the way it allowed and encouraged that.

Are Famitsu actually paid off for reviews or are people trying to be edgy? Don't follow them.

It's not just that.
The way Famitsu reviews work is that they review games based on how they feel people should perceive and react to them. For instance, if they feel that a particular game should be given more attention, they'll give it a high score. Several years ago, when the Japanese game industry started declining, they ramped up the number of perfect scores significantly, because they wanted people to start buying these games. So it's not necessarily that they're doing it just for money, but also for other reasons. Just not necessarily related to game quality.

Of course, they also do tend to give more favorable reviews to games whose companies have purchased a significant amount of ad content in the magazine as well.

In terms of review content, they have literally been pretty terrible since they started in the 80s. They're very short reviews that read like back-of-box quotes, giving very little useful information about a game.

Remind me, why was Famitsu ever seen as a reputable review outlet, and what changed that perception since?

Also, as many others have asked already, is there no other review outlet in Japan important enough to cover? I'm only aware of Dengeki or whatever it's called.

Good to see its 80 hours or so long. Hopefully that's full of stuff to do

I'm afraid it'll take me 120 hours because I still have to look up more uncommon kanji sometimes if it's text only.

Ugh, 80 hours. I'm guessing it will be just as bloated, repetitive and life draining as 3 & 4 were?

I'll probably pass. I'm enjoying TMS more than Persona anyways.

80 hours shouldn't be too surprising given the previous titles, but I still thought it would be shorter just because of the development costs being higher. Glad to know it's not the case. This will consume my life next year.

I guess we'll be getting a Persona 6 fairly soon to use those assets as much as possible.

Even better:
SMT V!

Famitsu confirms it's not better than Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Dragon Quest IX, series ruined, burn the world to the ground
again because we had that happen before in Persona 2: Innocent Sin's timeline

Did you play it on easy? 80 hours for p4 is normal for first runs.

Yeah, there's a video of all the social links up on youtube that's literally nearly 15 hours alone. That's without the actual story and gameplay. 40 hours on your first time doesn't really seem plausible unless you just skip a ton of crap which doesn't sound like a fun way to play.

80 hours is press time. Any normal gamer can shave 30-40 off of that. People said P4 was 80 and it's really more like 40-50 for any normal run.

Did you play on easy and ignore everything besides the main plot? No way those games are only 30-40 hours unless you're trying to intentionally hurry through it.

Here are the average completion times for Persona 3/Fes/Portable, Persona 4/Golden on how long to beat, without extras and just doing the main story.

Persona 3: ~84 hours
Persona 3 FES: ~80 hours and 30 minutes.
Persona 3 Portable: 68 hours and 30 minutes.
Persona 4: ~73 hours.
Persona 4 Golden: ~70 hours.

As you can see all of these are almost 80 hours except P3P, which makes sense because they removed anime cutscenes and 3D world exploration from that game, and as such it's more of a Visual Novel with point and click interface and 3D dungeons. I don't think it's feasible to beat console versions of P3/P4 and shortly, P5 in 50 hours unless you're intentionally skipping text/scenes/etc.

Spending 20+ hrs with your waifu.
I hope your relationship feels more unique this time, working your ass to max out her s.link and then everything gets boring afterwards because nothing is different..just a little description saying "you share a close bond with your girlfriend".

39/40 on Famitsu? 68 Metacritic in the west confirmed.

Why is it specifically Famitsu everyone on GAF rags on for paid-reviews when there is clear evidence going around that major gaming news sites in the west like IGN are also being paid off to give good scores?

Remember the days when Famitsu was treated as this hallowed and revered source in the West? It was almost like a legend, a treasure trove of gaming news and reviews that we had no access to.

Oh 90s.

Yeah, again, I don't think you can beat any version of P3 or P4 in 50 hours unless you're doing a speed run.

Also I hope that the Famitsu reviewer just played it fast, I mean, they're "reviewers" so it's they're job to spend a lot of times on games they might have to hurry to play them anyway.

I kind of want it to be ~95 hours for the average play time. :D

Kotaku article regarding famitsu

yeah, they gave MGS Peace Walker a perfect score. Don't get me wrong, Peace walker getting a perfect score is something i can live with, since i love that game. BUT, Famitsu product is in the game, and they also help with the marketing.... So yeah, can't blame other peoples for suspecting them of doing paid review.

Just out of curiousity how many do you know now, that you'll be able to play the Japanese release?

I haven't kept track of them, I just learn words and also kanji as a byproduct, not studying kanji alone :(

I know around 3000 words according to my flashcard software but the actual number is larger as that's not the only place I learn words from. When I get new ones a lot of them are "oh I know this one already".

But I've studied for 7 years now.
