They are talking about a "slider" for Tomb Raider. Performance or increased visuals.

Did you really watch the presentation? Paragon was one of the best examples of the differences.

Weird, I watched the entire presentation, and I don't remember anything about Paragon. Both For Honor and Shadow or Mordor were mentioned looking better even at 1080p and why though.

guy from crystal D is talking right now.

Tomb raider has a slider.

1080p unlocked framerate
1080p locked with everything on
and 4k

so yes if you have a 1080p TV you will see benefits.

Seems like consoles are made or broken depending on its announcement and Sony should know this. They had some good stuff in there, but what a terrible conference. When you show freakin Shadow of Mordor on stage... smh.

Why are people upset that the PS4 pro is still basically a PS4, just with more visual pop and more stable framerates? It's like y'all were expecting a ps5 or something

Seems like people were expecting the Pro to be a PS5 when it was clear it was never going to be that.

Nah. Just failing to see the value proposition for 4K where market adoption of UHD is only 10% of households.

There's a reason this console exists. It was obviously not a next gen refresh.

Sony decided to beat around the bush on why they're making tbis device. 4K is a reason, but that cant be the driving factor.

Ok now if more developers do THIS then I'm coming back around on Pro. I am waiting on 4k until 65+ inch HDR sets are more affordable.

If most devs allow me to put a slider onto 1080p with all the bells and whistles on then I'm much more interested

y'all should be ashamed
What is the point of this console, jesus.

Aaaaand there goes the nail in that coffin. I'm done with this thing.

That is incredible. Really hope Microsoft isn't that idiotic.

Uh...what multiplayer games these days are below 60fps?

Even Uncharted sacrificed visual fidelity to get to 60fps in multiplayer.

The few games that are going for 30fps (Watch Dogs 2) are still targeting 30fps for single player as well, if the footage is anything to go by.

Same here. This is the first Dev to actually say this, while everyone else is making painfully obvious that they don't want to comment on it just yet.

Hopefully they push this for all modes. I want Bloodborne's framerates fixed and Destiny to have 60FPS for their competitive modes at least.

I'm kind of disappointed. If i don't have a certain type of TV, which i'll be not getting at least for a few years, the pro version doesn't offer me much.

Where was the "we're mandating 60fps for every ps4pro compatible game" moment? Most of the gaming community is crying for 60fps games for a while now, and it seems the big guys don't even acknowledge this.

"you can't sell 60fps through a stream though!" well, yeah, neither can you 4k!

Seriously though SONY, kill your TV business, it just drags innovation on Playstation side of things. We don't care that you want to sell your 4k TVs.

Okay, salt over.

So true but near pissed myself laughing!

Have you actually seen a movie with HDR on a 4K screen? It doesn't look quite the same as the HDR shit from years ago (think Oblivion).

No, but they are currently talking about Rise of the Tomb Raider in 4K.

Yeah mentioned that will unlock the framerate and we can have up to 45 fps if we want on a 1080p tv...wow sounds great....

Not allowing different frame rates to play each other just sounds like marketing bullshit anyway. Look at the history of PC online gaming. Look at crossplay.
Console gamers are not PC gamers. One of the reasons people play consoles instead of PCs is for the level playing field.

After this, I know hope Scorpio becomes a new gen with it's on exclusives with backwards capability and not have Xbox One hold back it's power like the Pro and regular PS4. The Pro was so disappointing today and I was anticipating this day so much :(

Pre-ordered on Amazon. Better looking PS4 games? An obvious yes.

All the disillusionment is priceless...we had the fing specs and presentation points for months. Why do people get so caught up in rumors? It's literally the same as the solid leak.

I called the name.

Kind of a boring conference with no excitement or enthusiasm from either the presenters or the audience. Mark Cerny is a lovely human being but I felt like he was talking me to sleep as he presented their technical vision. This is basically just an incremental and marginal upgrade to the PS4 that focuses on an upgrade to image quality and I can't be the only person in the universe that finds that notion exceptionally boring. To contrast with Microsoft I found the Scorpio reveal at E3 to be much more exciting. Now that's a worthy technological leap. This is just a slight boost to support 4K and HDR on televisions that are like, out of most people's price ranges. They presented a boring concept as boringly as possible.

Also MS are going to kill them in the power race and currently have the upper hand IMO. All Sony have going for them is an acceptable price and early launch.

Scorpio is the more exciting machine for the moment.

Thanks for the replies, guess I must've missed something then? What slider are you referring to? I mean, I cant see the benefits of HDR or 4k on my current set (as well via stream). One thing I'm clueless about as well is if I need a special hdr set to be able to see it even if my PS4 gets and firmware update, I guess I do?

So the Pro won't even reach 60? Lmao.

To be fair though this is surely game/developer dependent and I'm sure some/lots of games will do.

Also it obviously boils down to cost. The ps4 pro is £350. If I wanted to make a decent 1080p/60 medium spec pc, I'm looking at £500 plus (prob more like £800). I mean to buy a gtx 1060 minimum spec would cost £235 alone (and I can't even find any stock available).

Sony want to be in a market where they target that £350 customer and under. Wish they did a higher spec Steam Box myself!

If this is what you're hoping you've not been paying attention. It's not a new gen, its xbone, in 4k

Actually I think it's the other way around. People on here who want Destiny at 60fps for competitive play are fooling themselves, that sounds like a nightmare between all the people playing on OG ps4's at 30. It would cause an uproar, not to mention if they updated netcode for players running on PRO consoles to only play against PRO players to make it fair. That sounds like a nightmare of netcode and having a ID identifier put in for the players to be matched up on what version console they are on rather than just keeping it all the same Framerate and increasing IQ for pro players.

I can't possibly understand why people are mad at Sony over the ~no fps advantage~ on competitive games.

Higher FPS on competitive games can give a huge advantage over the others. If anything we should applaud them for thinking of all their user base when taking this sort of decision. It would definitely push more people to upgrade otherwise.
This.

And is over a year away probably. Sony announced a upgraded PS4 at an aggressive price for current and potentially new owners alike. Couple that with current install base and they are sitting rather pretty in my opinion.

I know for a fact I will be selling my 1TB to one of two folk in my work for around £200. So, £150 investment for a wee boost that will probably last me two years? I'm okay with that.

The Scorpio will likely interest me, but MS themselves have more or less said it will be a full 4K capable Xbox one. Hardly going to kill them, unless 4K sets costs plummet in the next year to utterly ridiculous levels. All this while Sony have a currently more powerful console on shelves for the best part of a year, along with that massive install base.

Sony could announce PS5 for 2018 at this rate.

Eh? The Pro is exactly as it had been rumored : A more powerful "version" of the current console, and not an entirely different beast. Those who are interested in the resolution and framerate enhacements, with all the bells and whistles, will opt for the Pro seeing that it costs only $399. The others will probably go for a Slim. Those of us who already have a PS4 will stick with it until the PS5 arrives...

For folks who keep saying "MS has won" I don't think you guys consider the bigger picture. MS is saying how awesome their console is from the back of the line. This console's generation race is over in general. I am not sure what MS is thinking but they should've announced it closer to this presentation and its probably going to be about a year late. The newer gaming generation won't be too far behind it and Sony has the bigger market share right now, they're in a perfect position to have a better, weaker or whatever console especially when you consider they're also launching first. As I noted, launching a console later than your competitor, especially almost by a year (remember that, PS3?) is going to hurt. I also wonder....I mean I cannot wait to see how much Scorpio will be lol...When you're bufing up graphical and processing power to the extent the Scorpio is, you're demanding alot of money from consumers.

The relatively low-key tone of the conference implied that Sony knows they've got a bit of a tough sell on their hands here.
How is it a "tough sell" in a market where 100$ premium was (and currently is) regularly charged for a small storage upgrade (companies have been doing this for 11 years in console space now).
And even looking at consumer electronic across the board (phones, tablets, etc.) this is an extremely rare case where the 100$ more expensive SKU has a tangible upgrade of any sort.

Let's put it this way, you can buy a 500GB slim for $299, or a 1TB Pro at $399. Or you can buy a slim and upgrade it's HDD for $50 but that's just daft.

Griss doesn't understand that its actually MS that will have a very tough sell come later next year when just about everyone will have what they already prefer and the Scorpio will only appeal to a minority. I honestly believe that the Scorpio will sell at a major loss but I could obviously be very wrong.

Posted in the other thread and I mentioned this the other night but was ignored.

The leaked presentation stated 1080p tv users would get extra graphical improvements if you don't have a 4k tv.

We've known this for months lmao.

Thanks for explaining the situation. I was sure Microsoft had won video game consoles and was worried.

It's insane isn't it. Some people here got themselves so worked up. Sony have downplayed this system from the start, it's all the pent up hype that's causing these reactions when the result was pretty clear if you just read between the lines of what Sony were saying earlier this year. It's also very obvious as to why this wasn't at E3, it's a hardware update - that's it. It doesn't need huge fanfare or a giant conference with tonnes of reveals. They put on the show for the core audience to say this is what you've been hearing about these last few months, this is what you can expect. Sony haven't dropped the ball or "lost it", people just need to adjust expectations when it comes to these things.

I dont get that either.

We just got the info, here it is, thats how it looks like, thats what it can.
End of the line.

And people scream about specs and no uhd bla bla bla

If you guys wait another month you will get all what you ask, and no one told you to pre order anyway so,

I know there's another thread for this discussion but surely it all depends on how many developers will update their games or bother to include such settings in the options, right?

Yes. Sony offers the option, but what devs do with it is entirely up to them. But most games are already scalable on PC. Developers decide on effort vs reward, and for most of them that is favourable for 1080p enhanced modes being offered than the other way around. (It's cheap and most people have 1080p sets so sales potential is there.)

Seems to me like they could have just done a Xbox One S style upgrade and added 4k upscalling and media to the PS4 slim and just skipped making the Pro until they can have a more meaningful upgrade

This. With Scorpio coming, this will be slaughtered (performance wise, especially if they put Zen instead of Jaguar).

So didn't House say they were going to talk about what the Pro will do for PSVR? Did I black out during that part?

Better graphics, better fidelity, better framerate.

All right, got it. I'll have to wait this one out for a bit and see how devs will approach this with both current and upgoming titles.

With Farpoint or what it's called they choose to upgrade visual fidelity. Devs could focus on frames if they want. I guess the minimum of 60 fps still stands? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

What do you say to someone who tells the following "Folks are going to optimize games on pro that it will run like garbage on base systems, slowly but surely"?

You say nothing because they are right, it will happen. First party games will lead the way, it's just a matter of time.
