The Mass Effect Community Thread

Forgive the dumb questions, but I was hoping to jump into the ME series this Fall. I snagged a PS3 and was hoping to start next week. Should I read Mass Effect: Revelation before trying the game?

Is the PS3 version of the series really that bad?

Not terrible ports but 360 was the smoother performing experience.

2 has some rough loading times is probably the biggest issue on ps3.

Please be Andromeda stuff...

No. There is no way it is.

Shinobi came specifically into the Mass Effect thread to ask if we were excited about tomorrow, which is the day of the Playstation event.

Its very obvious there is nothing to see...

that was sarcasm if it wasn't obvious

I still don't believe that we'll see anything serious until N7 day.

But maybe Sony is doing a partnership deal with ME? First shot at DLC?

Actually tomorrow would be a much better day than N7 day. The Sony event will have a much bigger media presence.

N7 day is really more or less just another day.

If they do it today I'd be surprised, simply because it would be lost in the noise of the Neo reveal and the like.

The advantage of N7 day is that it's a day in which it would dominate the news cycle. I mean, what the hell else is there for gaming sites to talk about in the beginning of November?

^ Works at Bioware Montreal.

Mac Walters and Aaron Flynn liked it.

I think it's quite probable that we'll see something today.

Oh goodness. Here I am laying in bed getting all hyped up for I'm not quite sure what.

Story trailer with a release date maybe? Anyway, can't wait.

Just as long as there is no exclusivity DLC/pre-purchase deal with Sony...

I'm seeing certain people count down to N7 day.

Wonder why.

edit: It'd be disappointing if it was revealed at the PS even- like god damn, show off your game on a good platform for fucks sake, lets see this shit at 4k 60fps.

It wouldn't be lost in the noise at all. It probably won't be the big thing that gets talked about, but it wouldn't be forgotten by any means.

On another note:
Why do so many give a shit about the "best time?"

what does it really matter if it is shown now OR on N7 day?

Or....

or...

I'd say if they can show us something at the Sony presser that will create buzz since it will have a wide reach and then follow it up on N7 day.

However, I am not inclined to believe they would confirm a remaster for the original trilogy as it wouldn't make much sense to talk about a last gen game for a new gen console.

Any hints or teases from Bioware people for today? Or are we going in there blind?

Shinobi, I hope for your sake it's either a story or gameplay trailer! :p

That looked awesome, can't wait to see more. Wanted to see some combat, but hey! First gameplay video!

Those fucking animations man, they were so shit and yet they made me nostalgic for Mass Effect.

Never change Mass Effect and your shitty animations.

I know it was a pre-alpha build, but the squadmates suddenly showing up at the side of the protagonist out of nowhere made me burst out laughing

The animations looked really smooth and flowed together nicely. I'm in the market for a 4k monitor specifically for this game and all of the neon/futuristic lighting is sure to make everything stand out at a high resolution. The faces looked really good too. I can't wait to customize my character!

It's "pre-alpha," but is probably closer to (if not at) beta. Game companies love trotting out stuff that's far into development and slapping "pre-alpha" on it.

The slow walking and the jetpack landing break were cringe inducing. Also the vault-over-cover animation is still in I see lol

Now to go back to sleep until N7 day.

So many negative people in that other thread... I thought it was fine for what it was...which was basically a "tech demo" for the new PS4, rather than a trailer showing how the game plays in general.
Animations didn't look THAT terrible either, certainly better than previous ME games and the latest Deus Ex lol.

This. I loved it but you can't get that out in the other threads because everyone is just being extremely negative tonight.

Can't wait to see more.

That's the thing, when comparing it to the other Mass Effect titles you definitely see improvement. Obviously there's still a lot yet to be seen, but going in I knew to expect a "tech demo" if anything so I wasn't disappointed. I came away happy with what I saw. To even see the game at this point is nice lol.

Yeah, it's just a tech demo for 4K. So the reasonable thing to expect is a demonstration for 4K.

However Mass Effect fans are not known for being reasonable. They have crossed that line such a long time ago they can't even see it anymore. Bioware should have known what kind of reception this would have gotten, they might have been pushed a bit to do it.

The only thing I can agree with , is that the aethetics look very very, cheap and generic. That level is everything I hate about sci fi. Definently not a good sign. I hope I'm wrong. However I'm starting to worry. Help.

Game's much farther along than "pre-alpha" at this point. That was just a visual showcase to show the graphics.
Yeah, AFAIK it's playable start to finish. I'm dying to see this run on quad-sli 1080s just to make my face melt.
Combat too- biotic charge mid jump pls

I should still plan to get this on PC, right?

especially with an i7 6700k and 980 Ti, eh? I don't think PS4 Pro is coming close to those specs...

They really are struggling to show off this game. Jimmies are going to be severely rustled if they fail to make an impressive showing on N7 day.

Yes, this is what it feels like to me.

The negativity does seem overblown in isolation - but this is not an isolated thing. All we've been getting for years is key art, talking heads, mood-setting trailers and a couple of tech demos.

This is a game with an ultra-passionate fanbase who want to see Mass Effect climb back to glory after the divisive ME3.

These breadcrumbs of information, with half-hearted 'clues' to discuss on social media, aren't selling it. Trying to keep track of this fluff is not setting the imagination on fire. I really want to be hyped for this but, outside of fond memories and the brand name, I just can't find it in me to get excited.

Guess the only thing that keeps me hopeful is the leaked survey that actually contained something substantial about the gameplay/storyline. Since then, it's just been more of this.

Maybe it's not wise trying to get hyped over nothing. They will show it when it's ready.

Wondering the same thing, but with a gtx 970. I've got it in my brain that the PS4 pro is right around that neighborhood.
The 970 performs the same-ish as a stock 480 which itself is better than the PS4's GPU; and 980 should easily outclass it. If you're both using Intel CPUs then it's no contest.

Because it's s no win situation for Bioware.

No matter how much or how little they show people will complain. They could show a lot more and people would nitpick to no end.

If I were them I'd keep everything close to the vest until they feel the time is right. That's really the safest plan.

Yeah, I get this and agree... although my interpretion of 'close to the vest' would be something akin to Fallout 4 or Civilization VI, not releasing footage, trailers and 10 minute segments at major events but fair enough, less detail means less nitpicking.

My post was in response to people saying they didn't understand where the negativity / apathy comes from. Right or wrong, I think it's understandable considering the way this game has been positioned and promoted so far. It doesn't exactly exude confidence from the outside looking in.

This is generally what I think. In theory there is some sort of middle ground that they could hit between showing stuff and not showing too much, but I just don't know if that's even a realistic spot for them to hit at this point.

They first showed stuff at E3 2014 and officially revealed it at E3 2015. We knew they were planning a new ME in 2012. It's just such a long time. My preference would have been to just not reveal the game until E3 2016, but that's a losing proposition too and probably a terrible idea given the survey leak.

What difference does it make if they start to market it now or a few months from now? It's not like you can buy the game until next year, so I'm really not understanding why this is an issue. I can get wanting information but this "if they don't release stuff now, then I won't get excited" thing makes no sense whatsoever.

The difference is that, since we've known about this game for years, showing more stuff sooner allays fears that there have been major problems in development and lets a very cynical fanbase have a lot of information to look over and assess to see if the game is worth their time and money. That's why the survey leak was so huge for this game - it was literally the only concrete information we had after EA jerked us around with conceptual trailers and short dev diaries.

I agree with this. I get that they want to take a Fallout 4 style approach with the marketing, but it's kinda too late for that.

I don't know about you guys but my hype level is through the roof for this. Looked absolutely amazing in my eyes. Not perfect, but its imperfections are what makes it mass effect.

I agree. I love the repurposed fade bridge effect from Dragon Age. It has a very alien look in Mass Effect, almost Reaper-like.

With the new interview revealing that both the female and male leads are canon and both are in the game (as siblings), I'm beginning to realize one thing:

Bioware doesn't really understand how a Fallout 4-style reveal works.

I seriously think it's in the best interests to just clam up, tell people to wait for N7 day, and then reveal all then. I'm not sure this trickle of information stuff is working.
