Except Ori is a metroidvania, whereas this game is just a collectathon.
Artificially gating off areas with collectibles to pad time (the reviewer says you have to get EVERY single one) and finish the game, is a crappy design.
You do not need to get every collectible. You dont need to get any of the 50 audio logs. You dont need to collect a single upgrade part (the little boxes, of which there are hundreds). The only thing you NEED to get are the non-basic cores, a lot of which come through normal course of play.
The sub 6 reviews just sound like whining to me. I'm 8 hours into the game and loving it. The long loading times is shitty for sure, and that alone knocks it down at least a full point for me, but I'd still give it a 7.5-8/10. 4/10 for this game is insane. That's lower than a lot of FAR worse games have gotten.
If you like metroidvanias and 3rd person adventure games, you'll probably dig ReCore unless you're just a jaded, overly cynical, impossible to please, entitlement-generation gamer.
which forced me to spend considerable time hoofing it back and forth from the nearest fast travel point to swap out one corebot for another.
Pause game, hit Y to fast travel to crawler. Switch bots. Fast travel back to the nearest fast travel point to the prismatic core youre after. There are TONS of fast travel points. Most prismatic cores are within 10-15 seconds' walking distance of one. The only 'time hoofing it' you should be doing is the loading screens, which I will admit are the game's biggest flaw. The hyperbole about "hoofing it" is just ridiculous.
Also re: gameplay being repetitive - So every shooter on the planet is repetitive. I mean all you do is run forward and shoot shit, over and over and over until the end. The gameplay moment to moment is great. I especially love the platforming bits when you use the spider bot. The camera movement really gives you a good sense of momentum.
which means that if you’re heading for a specific spot, you need to keep pulling up the map screen to see where you are relative to your destination.
Which takes less than half a second. Seriously, this is nitpicking at its finest. Ironically, the one thing in this game that loads REALLY fast is the map. You hit the button to pull it up and it's opened nearly instantly. A lot of games take a second or two to load the map, but ReCore's map loads immediately. I get that a lot of the people writing these reviews need hand-holding to get through a game, but those of us that grew up playing games without waypoints, trails of bread crumbs, and hand-holding are doing just fine in ReCore.
Curious, is the review scale shifting away from the American grading system? Some of the lower scores seem a bit harsh for the writing that accompanies them. I would think a 4 would be near unplayable, not just poorly designed and long load times.
If it is shifting, that's fine, as long as it's consistent. Sucks for games caught on the cusp, but I may still look into this game if they're able to address the loading times.
The review system is changing, but it isn't remotely consistent. There are a LOT of games far more deserving of lower scores that have scored higher than Recore. This game doesnt come close to warranting a 4/10 (or less in a few reviewers' warped reality). Even the strictest review shouldnt go below 6/10 for this game. You're absolutely right that a 4/10 should be nearly unplayable, and this game is not on that level. Anything from a 6/10 to 8/10 would be much more realistic.
This tells a lot more about the gaming journalists than it says about the game really. Go pick and play and anyone can see the game is no where near the trash they painted, on the contrary it's a great game with a few issues that keep it from being incredible all around.
This 100%. ReCore is a good game that could have been great, or maybe a great game that could have been incredible. It certainly isn't the trash some reviewers are claiming it is. And I am starting to think ReCore might just be a good litmus test for exposing reviewers' biases.
In terms of story, it's kinda refreshing not seeing any zombies, soldiers, or aliens as the main enemy or related to the story. Also, I'm already enjoying having Mack the mechanical dog at my side and really looking forward to continuing my recore journey with him. Controls were very tight and responsive with my xbox one controller and didn't have any lag when fighting baddies or the boss.
...
back to the reviewers, not sure about anyone else but I'm finding that game reviews online is become worse than movie critic reviews. Maybe its time neogaf has a review section just for gaffer game reviews with a unique scoring system and easy for users to find a game.
my advice, for 40 bucks (US)/50 bucks in Canada, its a no brainer if you games like mega man/Metroid/or tomb raider. what's even better is that you get the pc & xbox one version.
Agreed, and GAF-only reviews isn't a bad idea!
Through the first dungeon. Graphics, performance and animation are roooouuuggghhh
The game however is super fun, the combat is ok, the exploration is pretty good and the platforming is very good.
Super happy with this purchase
See, even a mod gets it. Game isn't without its flaws, but it sure as shit isn't a 4/10 'garbage tier' game some of these reviewers are claiming it to be. I guess controversy gets da clicks, though.
