Forza Horizon 3 PC Performance Thread

So, this is a thing to keep in mind if you have framerate problems:

The framerate breaks apart on my home and work PC...whenever there is a window open in the background. Doesn't matter what it displays or if it's using any actual power. When I Alt+Tab, minimize it and return to the game: 60fps! The bigger the window, the bigger the FPS drops.

I have never encountered something like that. If your PC should be able to run the game smoothly but isn't: Try that.

....lol. Amazing

I really wanted to test this tonight, but didn't want to spend another $40 to do so. i7-4790K, GTX 980Ti FTW, 32GB, 4K. Hopefully it's good. Otherwise I'll just go with stability on the XB1.

Well lovely it keeps crashing all the time after that first horizon festival upgrade. Also twice locked my PC so I can't do anything but hit the restart button. I don't remember that happening with any other game in years.

Ey, but exclusive fullscreen mode has a few problems so borderless is the future they said....

Is performance really not that good on a 2500K and a 1080? We have the same setup and I cant play til midnight. My 2500K is at 4.6GHz, not sure what yours is at.

Seems like the games doesn't use multiple cores properly so in CPU heavy situation the framerate tanks.

It would be interesting to see if performance decreases when you disable cores. For all we know it's a single threaded game.

MS has probably sold a million S models. Nvidia has sold more cards than that, even if MS has sold 2 million S. PC guys have been buying 4K HDTVs since day 1 since we've the ability to display native and really the only people getting any benefit for the last two years. Point is both are very small numbers in the grand scheme of things and I'd wager more PC guys have a PC hooked up to Pascal card with a UHD TV and more importantly HDR and UHD native work very well together so the best way to utilize a UHD TV is through PC.

I've had a PC hooked to a HDTV since 2009

Anyway, it's being worked on and a bunch of games are in the list and I'm sure many will follow suit once it gets going.

Get solid 60 on the High preset with a 970 and 4690k when driving around in freeroam, drops to 45-50 when there are more cars present (races). Goes back to 60 if you manage to get into the top 3.
Good motivation to win the races. :p

edit: played a bit more, getting BIG drops in cities

It's just development resources. Very few people not only have the right video card (need HDMI 2.0a + HDCP 2.2) but also a 2015 or 2016 4k TV with HDR10 implementation. That limits it to the 950/960, 1060, 1070, 1080, Titan X Pascal and AMD 470/480 for the most part plus a TV that supports HDR10 properly in PC mode at 60 Hz. It sucks, but even the GOW4 developers said they aren't implementing PC HDR unless there is big demand for it and the GOW4 port looks really well done. Supposedly all Maxwell cards "support" HDR but there aren't any HDR monitors so that limits it to cards with full HDMI2.0a/HDCP 2.2 support to connect to 4k TVs.

I'd buy this argument if there were millions of Xbox Ones capable of displaying HDR in the wild, and that version wasn't supporting it either, but the exact opposite happens to be the case.

need some screenshots, pls. the wait is unbearable..

Not that it should matter.. but are you setting this for the application settings itself or at the global level?

Tried both, both just crash the game..well not even crash it just starts up with the Forza Horizon logo and just closes.

So I am stuck with the stuttering.

Are there any performance differences between having the game installed on an SSD and a regular hard drive? Besides loading times of course. And is there an easy way to transfer the game from my hard drive to my SSD without having to redownload the entire thing?

The game doesnt unlock for another 6 hours for me but you guys are really scaring me. My specs are :
nvidia gtx 1070
i7 6700k
16 gigs of ram at 3,000 mhz

Was hoping I would be getting above 90 fps maxed out at 1080p, but now I think I need to lower my expectations.

Will be trying this if I experience any issues after the game unlocks.

The best you can hope for in this ultra demanding game @1080p with your rig is 25-30fps at medium settings. Keep your expectations in check.

Got a frametime chart from afterburner you could post?

I don't like activating sweeping, opaque software settings that fuck with the how the GPU outputs, but Framerate Smoothing is an absolutely essential thing to have enabled in this for me. The hitching with it off makes the game borderline unplayable.

Sadly I'll be passing on this. Most anticipated title next to BF1, too. I just cant play racing games w/ random stutter, especially at 60fps. Even just cruising around w/ stutter is..I can't do it. Immersion breaking, yada yada.

Praying for a miracle patch.

Yeah, I'm the same. The whole reason I went digital here is for a PC version at a locked 60 (at 1080p too, so not beastly settings). If it turns out the game can't provide that for me, I'll be sticking with the xbone copy. I hate that it's 30fps, but at least it's more or less rock solid.

My game loads up only sometimes. I click the icon, then the logo appears in the small window as if it's loading. It has roughly a 1/5 chance of working, otherwise it just closes the window. Very strange as it's not consistent at all.

Never mind. Maybe it didn't lol

What I do want to know though is why is my VIP or my cars not activated? Game is acting like I just have the standard edition when I bought the Ultimate edition

@HeliosT10:

Not sure if the team is aware but it seems that Horizon 3 has the same bug Apex had at launch, where when using 4K (Nvidia DSR in my case), the photomode seems to be 1080p still as it's noticeably blurrier than gameplay right now.

My PC version finally unlocked.

i5 3570K, 16GB, GTX 1070

I'm getting around 50-55fps at 1440p in ultra settings. I'd be happy enough with that if it wasn't for the stuttering.

Lowered my settings, even set at 30fps - still stuttering. Doesn't seem to be linked to frame rate/performance.

My game is so bad I wish I had stuttering. My game feels like it's just skipping huge frames. It feels like an extremely laggy online match. Turning down everything to low doesn't even help in the slightest.

Gsync 144hz, i7 5820k 4.2ghz, 16gb ram, 980ti

Man, I'm worried this game is gonna be a shitfest on my 8GB of RAM. Have a 2500K and GTX 1080 as well. Is anyone running with 8 and having issues?

Honestly I would just upgrade to 16GB regardless, RAM is cheap these days. 8GB is pretty borderline for a lot of the higher end games these days, and it doesn't make sense to bottleneck your 1080 like that.

Lock fps to 48 and make sure frame rate smoothing is on, when I had frame rate unlocked it was an absolute mess and it was still pretty bad at 72fps lock

Have you got framerate smoothing turned on? That fixed 99% of the stutter for me, pretty much same system as you except 6700K and installed on SSD. Without framerate smoothing on it's a stuttering mess for me.

I have 16GB on the way from PCCG, but sounds like the issues arent to do with RAM. Might just need some tweak in a patch coming on release day?

(1070 and a 6700k), for me the game performs best with everything ultra, downsampling from 2880x1620 to 1080p, FXAA ON, MSSA at 2x, framerate smoothing on, vsync off. But framerate locked at 48 fps. Locking at 48 fps seems to make everything run super smooth with no drops. Game looks and runs amazing, no drops in the city or anywhere. With unlocked / variable frame rate, or even locking at 72 I get a bunch of stutter and frame drops. 48 feels great. Give it a try.
