Feels bad man. Pepe the frog has been listed as a hate symbol.

I thought the whole "Pepe is racist now" things were just a meme joke thing. I didn't think Pepe was actually used as some hate symbol.

Guess this is the sort of things Palmer Luckey's money goes towards? Turning sweet, innocent, rare memes into hate?

Adding a swastika to a pepe image doesn't make pepe a hate symbol. The hate symbol is still the swastika. It should be fairly obvious to most.

Now, if Trump gets elected, turns out to be Hitler v2 and also adds pepe to the american flag it would start to make sense to compare pepe to a swastika symbol. But i think we'd all have bigger problems than pepe to deal with at that point.

People in this thread are seriously misunderstanding what the ADL list is about. It's not supposed to be some kind of list of banned symbols or something like that, it's supposed to be a list of symbols that can be used to identify white supremacist people and organisations, because not all of their symbols are as blatant as the swastika.

Because they're so stigamatized, white supremacists form a somewhat hidden subculture that rely on dog whistles and abstract symbols to identify each other. Stuff like "88" or that triforce-looking thing are part of that. They're not inherently evil or something but if they use them the right way they can broadcast their allegiance without overtly revealing it to people who aren't white supremacists.

Pepe has been co-opted as one too - when used in specific contexts. Trump Pepe is one such context, overtly racist Pepe memes obviously another, and even heavy use of ordinary Pepe memes in say an otherwise very racist twitter feed can function as one too. Does that mean you should stop using Pepe memes because they're forever taboo now? No. Just recognise that they are being used as a dog whistle as well, and be a bit careful about not accidentally coming off that way - for your own sake, if nothing else.
Good point. Maybe people won't just add it onto everything now that they have to think about this first before they use Pepe in some context in a post. That's the upside to this.

It's time for people to stop thinking memes are the good guys. Memes are not the good guys.

Memes are the enemy.
Says the person with the anime avatar. 🙊

Except that is not how this site is viewed. When people view the symbols on that site, they see it as "well, that means racist/white supremacist now". The average person won't think "that COULD mean racist/white supremacist, but only in certain context by certain people". Yes, I did see they basically wrote "Pepe meme is racist, but only when it's used in racist content" on the site, but most people are going to ignore that.

I believe the site makes it clear that certain symbols (the weird thing that looks like the bloodborne hunter symbol for example) vary by context and shouldn't be immediately viewed as as symbol of racism.

Do people seriously not see the hundreds of alt-right shitheads using Pepe memes to say bigoted shit, or this just one of those "I'm gonna be deliberately obtuse because I can" things?

I don't because I am not around that material I assume. But my Facebook feed is full of non racist Pepe memes. Especially ones to do with gyms and lifting.

Kermit is next

Boy, people are pissed at the ADL about this.

Maybe they should take some of that anger and direct it towards the neo nazis that have co-opted the meme instead?

I know, but the average person won't see that, just see that it's on the site and will make judgement based on that.

I don't think you understand how many people have invested into rare Pepes. My stocks are plummeting because of this article.

The average person doesn't go to the ADL website. People that go there know what they're looking at.

This is just a case of people jumping to the defense of a bizarre and unfunny meme without understanding any of the context around the ADL.

And letting racists win that fight is the right thing to do? What's wrong with setting the record straight?

No.

Just in this case the record consists of how a band of faceless people spend their days steeped in bullshit. Can be fun silly harmless bullshit. Or pure trolling and hatred

It's just not worth it. And this is a battle you can never win, when a meme so easily turns to a racist champion it says all you need to say about internet culture. It is at best a steaming pile of shit with at times a thin veneer of harmlessness

Just not worth caring about, spend your time on something, a cause that can do some good, not fighting about what a silly meme means

Who cares what the "alt right" says in memes.

Who cares what the ADL says about memes.

A balanced approach.

Dat Boi is better anyway.

Like I know this can only be sarcasm... I hope. Dat Boi is the most forced meme in existence and only normies use it, while the rest just cringes whenever he appears.

Dat boi is way better than Pepe at least. You're saying Dat Boi not only isn't a white supremacist symbol, but repels white supremacists?

This is stupid.
I use it all the time as filler.
It's not a racist symbol by itself, it's the context that is.
If it says "gas the kikes, race war now" then yea, otherwise it's just a frog.

You can just as easily turn Doge into a racist symbol if you start writing racist things on it.

I feel like this is the next move. See how many memes you can get added to the ADL's list.

Probably to stop the poster being able to delete it and cry innocence.

That's not our job to worry about, but instead, happens is the propagation of a gif that shouldn't have any visibility. In fact, it would have been better if he did delete it.

Pepe is used as a dog whistle for alt-right members. It's why the dude yelling "pepe" at Hillarys speech was a call out to alt-right viewers, and why Pepe in that deplorables photoshop that Don Jr tweeted out was a clear call out to their white supremacist supporters.

Pepe is a lame, old AF meme anyways. Just let it go.

Lol I don't know, man. I kind of like Dat Boi better as a meme than Pepe. By saying that, I'm by no means saying that Dat Boi is the best meme, or high brow, etc etc etc.

I do not like living in the time where people are fighting a culture war over a frog who pees with his pants around his ankles.

Edit: I don't think Pepe is really used to "signal" anything, though. Nobody is getting a Pepe tattoo on their neck and meeting new white supremacist friends as a result of it. It's just a meme that white supremacists like to use for whatever reason, I guess because frogs are actually the most perfect bastion of whiteness imaginable? I have no clue.

Double Edit: The obtuseness people display over the fact that, yeah, white supremacists really like Pepe more than anybody else likes Pepe is very strange. Nobody is saying you can't use Pepe, just that you should be cognizant that there is a very reasonable chance that if you see Pepe affixed to a conservative meme for no apparent reason, the overwhelming likelihood is that the author had a white supremacist message.
