Now that the mood for this game is rather positive for once, do you think FFXV will restore the glory of FF as a top tier franchise or at least go a long way in working towards that? Or do you think it'll still be subpar for a mainline FF game?

All going to depend on story execution I think....

Does anybody actually have a source for that claim? I just remember Tabata saying the second half was linear. I don't remember him backpedaling later.

Not I, just saw folks saying he'd made assurances on this front in the last couple of days, but not sure where...

Just hope the game sells pretty well.

I would hope for is respectability. Take steps to return it as a respected, credible franchise. Continue to do what FFXIV: A Realm Reborn did. Get people talking positively for once.

If this doesn't happen, I can't imagine how badly people will look at the IP. They have given the appearance that it is all of nothing with this game. =x

Ah, thanks for that! :) That sounds a lot better. Kinda like Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii).
One thing I don't understand though:

“Once the train sequence starts, the whole structure of the game changes drastically, where it’s really focused on the story developments, and developing in a fast-paced kind of fashion thereafter,” he said. “So you won’t be able to physically go back and forth between those two areas. That said, you will be able to go back to that open world environment through the menu, so you will still be able to experience the adventure that awaits you over there, which amounts to over 200 hours of gameplay.

Does he mean a fast travel feature? But what does "not physically go back and forth" mean?

Maybe that the linear part is post-time skip, and we can go back to 10yrs before through the menu?
It wouldn't make much sense context wise (like, how is it that i can go back in time and unlock things i didn't do before the time skip?), but its the first thing that comes to mind.

You won't be able to go through the whole train sequence again but you can fast travel back and forth between the two parts of the game?

Why doesn't he just call it fast travel then? It's a well known feature and well known term. Why is he being so roundabout in his explanation?
Also, as Philippo mentioned, that would not make much sense story- or gameplay-wise.

That actually seems like a very plausible explanation, but it begs the pressing question: what the heck is that train sequence then? Wasn't it already marketed during the Versus XIII years? Pretty intriguing what it might entail!

It is going to be hard to explain this time travel, definitely, so I hope they can come up with a sensible, grounded reason for it (something like Sin in FFX that facilitates some type of time travel), if it is indeed the case.

Mmm. I wonder what's with the sudden change, though... Did they always have the idea for all the abilities and whatnot, but kept it to that simpler four-way grid?

They probably just wanted to keep the demos on Gamescom, PAX, TGS etc. easy and simple. You couldn't play more than a couple of hours but they wanted you to already try out many of the abilities, so they integrated just some of the most interesting ones and let you earn them much faster. The full ascension grid, that we now see, was very likely intended to be like that from the beginning.

Hmm, fair enough. That makes plenty of sense. Seriously, though, it looks so damn good.

For those nitpicking about the graphics, there is only so much you can get out of weak Jaguars, 5GB RAM and HD7850-level GPU for an ambitious open-world game.

Looking at menu screens kinda makes me wish this game had gambits to better control the AI.

I get the feeling the Duscae region we've been seeing over and over is the only "open" region in this game, and the rest is just a linear path. I don't see ourselves being able to fly around the entire world in the carship.

Ooooh i really love the new Ascension's look, fits very well with the whole royal aesthetic.

Also, this way looks more like you'll have to move into specific paths in whole sections, while in the previous one it looked way more easy to fill all the grid.

Not just the royal aesthetic, they also kinda look like constellations, which fits the Plague of the Stars theme as well.

You can fly the world in the car ship and we've seen two open regions btw. The early chapters aren't duscae

Yeah, I've only just noticed that. But I had never seen the summon sequence for Ramuh before and got excited like a little girl! Ahah

I remember that moment: I was playing the demo, liked it quite a bit, and then I went to fight Behemoth. I lost all my hp and saw the button prompt for the summon. I pressed it, and nothing happened. At that moment I panicked mildly for a second or two and then BOOM! Ramuh summon happens and I instantly fell in love with the demo and the game!

Love the new Ascension layout.

But all this FFXV positivity is going to take down NeoGAF at this rate.

LMAOO.

Those graphical upgrades on ps4 seem unbelievable seeing how it was just a month ago. I need to see this for myself.

I have a similar feeling... :/ But the open world is indeed not just Duscae but also the Leide desert (where Hammerhead is located) and the Cleigne wood and swamplands.

Even Duscae is bigger than just the valley we know so well by now. There's a just as big region to the west of the crystal shard crater and again a big region to the south, towards the coast.

Of Cleigne we haven't seen much at all. That is the region which is dominated by this peculiar peak:

I think the PS4 Pro footage with the birch trees is from there:

So Lucis (Leide, Duscae, Cleigne) is pretty big and not just comprised of the Duscae valley. But I also wonder if there are as big regions beyond the sea after the player reached Altissia. There has to be though, right? If the linearity of FFXV only starts towards the end of the game and everything that plays out in Lucis is merely a third of the game, there has to be more.

One of the art directors said they still haven't shown ~70% of the world.

I remember that being 50%. ;) But that too would mean there have to be more open-world regions. They are just really good at keeping it under wraps. Which is a good thing, really.

I guess it also has to do with the more open world nature of the game. They can afford to show the same two maps over and over again without having to show the exact same gameplay. They can do different side activities, optional dungeons, some story mission, they have several hours worth of brand new footage without having to show later areas. In a more linear game, if they keep showing the same place, they'll keep showing the same gameplay, so they have to spoil some things to keep people excited.

The dungeon that made everyone go nuts at PAX is only a couple minutes away from Hammerhead, when you think about it.

Maybe they can't show it because these areas don't show up until after the time skip? I am not too worried, personsally, but we will see what happens!

I also want to see the direct feed. But the game is looking stunning compared to the Gamescom build.

Well Famitsu said we'll be seeing more of post time skip noctis soon so yeah.

If people don't want anything more spoiled I think it's time to go on a blackout

The people who can't update wouldn't be getting any of these changes except maybe the skill tree if that really was scaled down for the demo.

This feels like a really weird thing for any of us to be worrying over when we haven't played the game yet.

How stuff like this works is a thing you'll discover while playing.
