Sure, but key difference you don't spend a lot of time in the overworld of past FF. except for when you decide to grind. The world map back then were relatively small, because developers place a bigger emphasis on the points of interest. Very, very little sidequest revolve around the map, no random shiny loot to pick up.
Contrast this to FFXV which prides on being the first mainline Final Fantasy which is open world, sorta. Player is expected to be in the overworld for a larger portion of time, do a lot of exploration and sidequests on the overworld, and you can bet points of interests (actually meaningful one, not talking about random fishing pond and stuff) are going to be far less, and being open world game, you have mandatory filler content all over the place, including random loot to collect off the ground.
Now Episode Duscae had me really concerned that the overworld of FFXV would be too weak based on the level design there to make for a compelling open world experience, but recent footage gave me some hope at least.
