Man they're going to murder a whole lot more people in paranoid fits before they give up. Worst case scenario they might try and destroy the whole city rather than surrender.

The sooner the liberation efforts start getting underway, the better. Daesh is just going to get more horrific as time goes on, but I can barely stomach reading some of the stuff they're talking about. I wish the best to their victims and hope they can finally be free of Daesh soon.

That's good to hear; I knew they controlled a huge chunk of Syria, but I never saw it put on a map. That was (And still is) crazy unsettling.

PKK doesn't have an Air Force. They're an insurgency rebel group fighting for Kurdish independence in Turkey.

Turkey hates them and sees them as a bigger threat than ISIS.

Iraq formerly invited PKK and YPG to assist in liberating Mosul this week.

Turkey invited themselves to be involved in the operation.

LOL, what a mess.

I never thought their presence was so big. What is ISIS presence in Iraq?

Also, that Syria map looks like a clusterfuck... I am afraid that once ISIS is gone, the road to normalcy will be a little bit short of impossible

Mosul falling is pretty much guaranteed. ISIS fighters were fleeing the city before the offensive even began.

Let's hope the deserters are an indication that ISIS might implode by it self, at least in Mosul where most fighters know they can't win.

Though most of what ISIS controls is no-mans land, central Syria outside the metro areas is a string of loosely connected villages and desert.

They have a very concentrated presence. Mostly Al Raqqa and Dier El-Ezor

They will probably turn into another taliban. They will resort to terrorist acts and indirect tactics, but at least millions of people won't by under their power anymore. I hope they capture Mosul asap.

Perhaps in the hope that ISIS forces will just flee Mosul instead of trapping them in and making them fight to the death.

I wish the Iraqi forces luck and hope for as few deaths for them and the civilian population as possible. In the long term I hope that someday a solution the the ongoing sectarian violence is achieved, I feel it would go a long way to stomping out the future versions of ISIS whatever name they take on.

Education and economic stability are going to be the crucial to achieving those goals. It's a long, long road ahead.

The Wall Street Journal has an interesting line – which we cannot confirm – in its piece on the battle for Mosul, suggesting that Isis has decided to give up on the city.

A mid-ranking Islamic State commander said in an interview over Facebook that the group has made a tactical decision to partially abandon Mosul, recalling their “human resources” to Syria where they hope to strengthen their foothold. “There will be no big great epic battle in Mosul,” the commander said. “The tactic now is hit-and-run.”

ISIS have around 10,000 militants in Mosul city and further 5,000 in the suburbs.
I wonder, logistically, how challenging it would be for ISIS to pull their forces from Mosul and relocate to say Raqqa, for example.
Seems like ISIS would rather avoid big losses in Mosul and defend Raqqa to the last man with all of their forces in a siege that would take a very long time.

They have been saying the same thing in every city. First Tikrit, then Fallujah, then Ramadi. Read the accounts I listed in the OP. They buried their own commanders for fleeing the battles in other villages, and now they're saying "tactical retreat". Its clear they are completely done as an organized force. US took out their high ranking generals in an impressive way. They lost their #2s in quick succession, Baghdadi whereabouts unknown, and Minister of War Al Adnani (quite easily the face of ISIS propoganda) no more.

you have several thousand fighters advancing to Mosul so i guess the cheapest option to transport them would be a Toyota?

kidding, but fair point. I guess everyone can't spend the amount of gdp on its military that the US does

Edit: apparently scopes for the 50 cal snipers are too much also
