i love the idea that nintendo won't be splitting their software between two systems. i skipped so many great portable games just because my life doesn't really facilitate that kind of gaming.

The worst thing I can say about the name is that it isn't a make-believe brand.

Game Boy, Playstation, Xbox, Gamecube, Wii, DS, Dreamcast etc.

A large majority of history's most popular consoles have used naming conventions that seem to come from a place of creative originality. They're names that have a bit of a unique ring to them and bring to mind a creative playground that symbolizes the titles we partake in. Even the Wii, which is a pun, had an iconic spelling convention to itself. Switch, on the other hand, is the first console in a long time that resorts to just using a simple everyday word to define it's console - something that on first glance might be considered more "corporate" (the console's design itself even looks less "playful" than Nintendo's usual fair as well). I think that might be what makes it a bit awkward, and it doesn't help that "NX" still resonates in the minds of many since that was a pretty cool old-school era reminiscent title for the console to have.

Having said all that I think even the dumbest names throughout history have become embedded into the minds of many with time. Wii was considered a terrible name but now it's something of a legendary brand. Wii U, even though I'd still call it a dumb name, is something that is accepted nonetheless. Time will tell how "Switch" ages, but I think Switch will become one of the much easier names to grasp, and it's actually a name that justifies itself through the concept. It's something fresh and a little different, and I think it'll do just fine.

Great gimmick. I'm definitely sold but only because I want to play a new Zelda on a new console.

My main concern is battery though. Realistically the battery can't be more than 5-6hours right? That's probably the best we can hope for.

Battery won't be great. This is probably why they're going with the "it's a home console first" approach. They want to Lowe expectations about battery life.

God, I can't wait to get my cartridge of Shadow Warrior 2. Playing games like that in portable form will be nuts.

Went into the local game store to pick up my BF1 copy today. Pre-ordered the thing. I put 100 down. and 20 for the pro controller.

I am so weak.

"Interesting Nintendo says "can't comment now" when asked if Switch can run smartphone games."

hum, see what's next ? :p

Among the logos of the confirmed partners, DeNa is there. It would only make sense to have game slike Super Mario Run on the console. Imagine getting it for your smartphone and then having a small pop-up showing on your screen saying "Play this also on Switch", with a purchase link to the console. Marketing success 101

IMO it's their best marketing argument to get smartphone players to them...

Why would anyone buy a new device to play a game they just downloaded on their phone?

Dena said they were on the list because they are making the account system.

Then how was Splatoon running on there? Maybe they need disc backward compatibility?

It's not the same game as we currently have on Wii u. Inklings had hairstyles in the trailer for one thing. It's likely a remaster or an improved port with additional content or whatever you want to call it.

Maybe they're continuing from where they left the Wii u version in terms of content.

Or instead a link saying Play Mario Maker on Switch. People who love the game on smartphone and desire a more fuller experience.

Was assumed. Lacks the setup to emulate either, especially the Wii U - no second screen, different hardware architecture and radically different storage solution. I guess 3DS could have been done if somehow the joycons could also attach to the screen in portrait orientation, but alas.

300€ + game or 350€ + Pro controller + game could be a good price.

It's not something for run to the store, but is affordable and fits in Nintendo's policy of profitability.

The problem is that is too close to PS4 and XO or even a little higher than these.

My guess is DeNa is there because they are building the Switch store intfrastructure and possibly the OS?

Splatoon is very likely a sequel.

Not just the hair styles, but the addition of hand/leg gear, the upright/completely different weapon-dependent Inkling postures, the spawn changes, the different weapon designs, lighting changes, the new map, etc.

It looks to change way too much to be just a mere remaster or enhanced port.

Nintendo need to have a 2nd trailer.

Switch needs gimmicks for mass market
I'm talking
Touchscreen
Motion
Camera
And Mic

This time the theme should be Switch controls

Scene 1
Show a girl playing Nintendogs on the TV playing fetch using motion controls of the Joy Con.
Girl gets a call. Then goes out and undocks the Switch and now the girl takes the dog for a walk. The dog has a leash and she pets the dog with the touchscreen. Screen shows how many steps she has taken etc. She meets up with her boyfriend in the park and uses AR feature and watches the Dog run around in the park.

Scene 2
Guy plays Pikmin using Pointer controls at home on the TV. Guy then undocks the Switch and now plays Pikmin only using the touchscreen in the bus.

Scene 3
2 Switches are set up against eachother like the NBA part of the first trailer. 2 people here play tablet tennis and face off against each other using the motion controls.

Scene 4
Old man plays Brain Age using mic and touchscreen controls in on his desk.

Scene 5
Kid creates a level on Mario Maker using touchscreen on his ay back from school. Goes home and docks the Switch. Him and his brother grab a Joy Con each and play 2 player Mario Maker.
Stick to your day job...

Honestly, what makes me most happy by far about this is that when it is released we'll finally be at the stage where no games are developed for any hardware platforms anymore that greatly detract from me being able to enjoy them with their technical inadequacy.

Yes. You can create a game with nice enough graphics on Wii U if you stick to a simple style. A 3D game rendered at 400*240 will never look good to me.

Late to the party, but I fully subscribe to this. That's why I never was tempted by a 3ds despite enjoying Nintendo games.

And that's why I like what I see about Switch so far and I was on board with the idea since the first leaks.

Mario has already been 50-60$ for the past 10 years aside from the portable versions. Remember this is a home console first as foremost and is being sold as such. Competing with the mobile market and their mass of free/cheap games hasn't stopped people from paying 50/60$ for these games. WiiU flopped but its attach rate for its games was incredible. I dont think price of the games is going to be an issue. 60$ is standard for pretty much every game nowadays and people are willing to pay that price.

I think that you forget that the people that really want to pay a premium price to play nintendo games (mario, zelda, ech) are ONLY the ten millions that bought the wii u.

The average person will compare the Switch to another tablet and not with another gaming console.

Anyway we have lots of ifs and we don't have any real answers. Lets wait for specs, price and games before making any judgements.

I would asume is a port with some upgrades, to be honest.

Still would love they follow with the franchise and of course, would love to se a good single player mode.

The portability is the biggest thing for me. I want to take my console with me and have it be a reasonable size, so I was sold immediately.

Smart by Nintendo to go with cartridges. Flash media is SUPER cheap, so they'll be able to store whatever they want on those things. They're not limited at all by storage size (at least on the physical media), so we probably won't need much storage space on the device itself.

In the end I'm super excited for this. Most likely a day one purchase.

Those sound very minimal upgrades.

Last two rows on that image are all middle-ware providers.

Stop It

Perfectly able to grasp the inherent value of the fishing game.
This looks like a combination project between Nintendo and Nvidia.

It screams to me like the hardware has had heavy Nvidia influence and basically could be a customised version of where their Shield platform was heading.

In fact that's probably best for both sides. The Shield hardware has been excellent but the Android ecosystem is still not breaking out as a gaming platform. Nintendo can do gaming that's for sure and the hybrid is very much where I imagine Shield TV 2/K2 could have been albeit with Nintendo's expertise in design helping.

I'm going to reserve judgement until I see pricing and the support this gets. It's certainly looks different from the Xbox One and PS4 and could carve a niche, but it needs to be executed perfectly and get compelling software. If 323rd parties don't care about Switch, it won't gain traction.

I'm gonna say this now: if this system is not multitouch that can play very easy and cheap ports of mobile games (games kids love today) then Nintendo deserves to fail with this system. I'm confident it will have these features, but it's weird Nintendo is positioning this so hard as a console and they're completely ignoring the handheld aspect that will make this even more popular.

Adding new forms of gear implies that the game has a new set of skills and game balancing to accommodate for such. While some of the graphical and presentational changes might seem minimal as well they strike me as a little too explicit to be something anyone would bother doing for what is essentially a port.

Splatoon isn't really something that to me seems like it would demand a whole bunch out of a follow-up. With the presentational changes already in place and the implication that there might be a proper local multi/tournament setups for it, it'd be easy to bill this as straight-up sequel - unless they call it a remake, but I think there's more money in it for Nintendo in saying it's the former.

Does anyone have any idea if the controllers are still connected wirelessly even when attached to the unit or is it a wireless connection 100% of the time?

No idea, but perhaps ... the Joy-Con (L) and (R) connect to the Joy-Con Grip or Switch console using a 4-prong port providing both a data and power connection. So as long as the Joy-Con (L) and (R) are connected ( to either the Joy-Con Grip or Switch console ) they are automatically recharged ( when necessary ).

I just saw that they announced this... it's interesting that's for sure and I think the thing would have been adored and loved by all before the first iPhone. I can see this being more popular in Japan. OH and if this doesn't have a touchscreen shame on Nintendo. Children under 15 expect touchscreens. In fact, if devices don't have them their first thought is to throw them back on the table they picked them up from.

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
Since the game would be running directly off of the internal guts of the Switch (not the dock), there should be zero input lag. It's not streaming.

EDIT: did FIFA come out on Wii U or are you taking the piss?
Fifa 13, it's awesome off TV, while it struggles to keep a correct framerate on TV.

I wish we had more info, but I'm guessing two things. One: not everything is finalized. Two: Nintendo is being very cautious about rolling out information to make sure people "understand" the system.

Looking for meaning in GAF
It looks really good. Playing on just the wii u game pad was really comfortable because you could play it anywhere and without taking up a TV screen if someone else was using the TV.

This seems like a great way to build on that. It also fits some of the other things Iiked, like separate left and right controllers.

I love the concept of this so much. In September I started working as a teacher and my time for gaming all but entirely disappeared. Now I can extend my gaming sessions by just taking the game I don't have enough time with at home along with me on my commute? Day one!

I just hope the specs or battery life don't let it down too much.

Laptop/bookbag usage is certainly regional. I take public transportation to/from New York City every day where ~95% of people always have a bag and either tablet/kindle with them. If you're in the middle of the country driving to work, there is no need to have a bag, but then when are you playing this anyways?

This looks stupid. Does anyone see the situations in the trailer actually happening in real life? No one's sitting around to play shit on a tiny screen with micro controllers in the middle of a social setting. It's too big and single task to compete with mobile phones in the handheld market as well.

This is going to bomb hard, and they won't have handheld to prop them up because they've thrown all their eggs into one basket.

I'll still but it cause I'm a sucka and that Mario footage have me 64 vibes. But how many people are like me?
