Dark Souls III DLC: Ashes of Ariandel - review thread

I thought there were three bosses?
The snow-lady with a scythe, the dude that whips himself, and some random dude with a big wolf.
But I guess one of them was just an elite enemy/mini-boss?

I wouldn't say it's dead but I do agree with him, more new takes on the formula. Another 1 off game with the art I posted above and and gameplay tweaks is what I'm looking forward to, or any other, dark, weird and otherworldly setting.

Yep. I am glad they are giving us the arena for pvp and some more DLC but I do agree I am ready for something new. I just want the combat style and PvP to continue. The setting and stuff can change.

Yeah I'm still waiting to hear some criticism besides "it's short." It's weird that people are so down on it when that's the only "bad" thing I've seen mentioned in this thread? Peeve seems to think highly of it based on his tweets.

this isn't a problem to me really. I'm gonna take my time exploring, playing slow, enjoying the atmosphere (i'm really curious because big M mentioned a "gothic vibe" in a interview, and i love gothic novels)

The scythe lady and guy with bowl both attack you in the second phase.

scythe lady is stage 1 of that fight, kill her and the whip guy gets angry and revives her and you fight them both at once with a shared health bar, kill them and she'll revive again but buffed like 3rd form Maria with black flame attacks

Then there's the hobo and the wolf as a single fight

He's really not wrong. Dark souls 3 was already woefully derivative as it stands. By the time i finished it I felt completely satiated by the series. It was pretty much clear just looking at the area design that they'd ran out of ideas with where to take the series. Another castle, another swamp, another volcano basin, another crypt...I mean at this point if from can't even find an answer to the question "what does this series have left to say?", I think it's best to let her down while she's in good standing. Move on to something else, BB proved the audience will move with the developer.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the info.

Franchise is dead, new stuff please.

Aside from being needlessly hyperbolic, this is super easy to say following three straight years of Souls releases--the best of the bunch making some pretty drastic changes to base formula.

In 3-5 years when we get DeS2, BB2, DS4, or some totally new Souls-esque game you and most people feeling a bit burnt out will be frothing for new one. Wait & see.

We're getting a new dark fantasy ARPG within the next few years but it's a new IP so I'm excited for that.

I played DS3 more than all the other games released this year combined, the length is fine by me as long as the areas are well designed and can be fun for invasions.

Last Year I spent more time on the Old Hunters than every other none-Bloodborne game combined as well, I'm not concerned about the length here.

how to spoil 101.

Why though? Won't a From Developed Dark fantasy ARPG still have so much Souls DNA that those burnt out would still be burnt out? Personally I would love a Mythological setting. Brighter and more colorful with Gods and beasts and cities that still have people alive in them. I'd love to see what From could do with that setting.

dark fantasy is just a setting, they can do many things with it. Des and Das were different in many aspects. I personally can't wait for a new dark fantasy from game because it is my favourite setting.

edit: sorry i meant medieval dark fantasy.

I mean, Bloodborne is different enough for me not to feel burnt out, make another jump from Bloodborne and ds3 to something new, change a few mechanics, keep the best parts of the world design and create a new world. Dark fantasy can cover soooooooooo many things, Bloodborne is Dark Fantasy, but it's a Gothic horror type of Dark Fantasy, Darksiders is dark fantasy, but an entirely different type of Dark Fantasy from Dark Souls and etc. But yeah I'd prefer From continue to delve into the weird. They're also developing a kids game so there's always room for brighter there

Not sure if insult or compliment but I mean, it's behind a hefty spoiler tag :p and they asked

Don't have a PS4 so I never got to play Bloodborne to see how different it was. Hopefully the new game is a good departure.

Man, not thrilled to see the time it takes to beat the DLC and the reviews. I might just wait for both of them to come out so they'll go on sale.

Man, if you ever get the chance, play it. Bloodborne was thereason I got a ps4, incredible game though GAF over hyped it to hell and back daily as if it was the second coming of Jesus Christ. But that game and the Witcher 3 made me fall in love with gaming again
which made me broke

I was wondering if anyone with an Xbox could help me out. I just purchased the season pass, and I don't see an option to download the DLC. Does anyone know what I need to do to play/download the expansion? Thanks for the help!

Bloodborne is literally the only reason I still have a PS4. I'm not telling you to go out and buy a console for it like I stupidly did, but once the standard ps4 dips a bit to 150$ used or something like that it might be worth it.

Did I saw praise for the Frigid Outskirts in the previous page? That was so shit it isn't even funny. I never rage on games and that area with the deers coming from the blizzard almost made me throw the controller on the wall. It wasn't hard or anything it was just badly designed unfair shit and after all you had to fight a boss you fought earlier only two at the same time... How can anyone praise that area? It was an embarrassment for the series.

I don't even remember a sale for Bloodborne's DLC or Dark Souls 2's. I got the DLC for Dark Souls 1 a whopping $5 less. I'm just gonna go ahead and buy the season pass now.

Playing unlocked is one of the most effective ways to PvP in DS2. You can aim ultra weapons too.

You could aim while neutral, but you couldn't out of a roll, or while swinging.

I actually made videos a while ago to demonstrate what I mean in one of the DS2 vs DS1/DeS/BB threads:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d9OoC0HvELQ

Compared to Bloodborne (and it works the same way in Dark Souls 3, DeS & DaS, although it's more fluid in DS3 & BB):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cb0MWa8kCH4

Keep in mind that in the DS2 video, I was aiming towards the camera in every attempt, but the game was only nudging the character towards that direction.

Look it up the "Ashes of Ariendel" dlc in the store, it should have an install option of you have the season pass.

Dark Souls has had its time, really getting worn out now, and this is coming from someone who loved the franchise more than any other, 3 is at the point where the series is starting to go stale.

Is this still up on the X1 store and if so after downloading it is it live? If so gonna jump back in on this and finish up my 100% achievements since all I need is 1 easy ending and some of covenant items that I can't recall name of the specific ones at the moment. Anyone aware if they raised the drop rate for some of those or not?

Covenants are still broken, but there's speculation that you can get them in the DLC arena.

Well said. These 2 DLC packs will be the cherry on top, Ashen one.

Dont agree. The game is intentionally trying to close the storyline and the callbacks were a part of it(That final boss!) The actual level design in the game was strong as ever. The problem was not enough time has passsed since the release of DS1 for us to feel nostalgic at being able to revisit these place(Like Shadow Moses in MGS4).
It just came off as fanservice. Especially if you didn't care about story.

I understand what you mean, but you could absolutely steer an ultra weapon's attack after you hit the button. Not a rolling attack, but the others. We're completely off topic btw.

2 bosses is fine
because each of them have 2 enemies
imo.
Besides,it's not like the previous dlcs had 10 bosses each or something.
Artorias:4
Sunken king:3
Iron king:3
Ivory king:3
The only thing that worries me is the length of the dlc and i hope you can meet new npcs.

Thnx, Ugh that's disappointing because I remember the ones I still need were ones that could drop off enemies in poison swamp area and the drop rates were ridiculous. That's the only reason I haven't 100% it yet because the grind for them is gonna be a pain in the ass. At least I'll have access to the dlc area right away though since I never finished 3rd ending because it wouldn't of got me the 100% without the covenant drops anyway.

Even if it is a bit short on content like I'm reading a lot of places any amount of more Souls content is always awesome in my book.

Do we have impressions of the story already?

Why is it that everyone who gets to play early doesn't give a shit about it? >_<

EDIT: Eleum Loyce is shit, btw.

Shulva for life.

I remember seeing this videos and even trying them myself but, when actually playing it doesn't really matter

I _guess_ it would matter more in BB which is a little faster paced but in the Souls games with its more deliberate, slower pace, it is just a curiosity to me

the thing that really threw me off when playing again DS1 this year was the lack of diagonal rolling while locked on. that shit killed me a few times until someone pointed out to me it wasn't possible until DS2

I agree, that's easily my least favorite area in any Souls/Bloodbourne hands down and I've completed all of them. I didn't find it difficult either and just like you I think the whole design of the area enemies and way you tackled the whole area and encounters was just bad. At least it was an optional area even though there is no such thing as optional in a Souls/Bloodbourne game for dedicated players lol.
