Nintendo Switch Partners - Bethesda, Atlus, Capcom, EA, Epic, Unity, more

We're talking about third-party support.

Could you care to explain why some 3rd parties with historic of antagonism against Nintendo like EA, Take-Two, Epic and Bethesda decided to support Switch after it's biggest flop when they ignored for most of the time it's most succesful platform of all time (Wii)?

Yamauchi was well known to be hard boiled and unfriendly to third-parties. He said he deliberately ordered the N64 to be hard to developed to repel untalented third-parties away. Iwata followed that strictly unfriendly management style toward third-parties at his tenure, especially against western devs. No secret why western support shrinked considerably toward GameCube days.

Devs aren't stupid. They won't ignore a userbase of >100 million because "the hardware is bad" or whatever. The reason why devs ignored Wii was because they had issues with Nintendo and their management. Otherwise, they would have mass supported it. Devs are now supporting Nintendo because there isn't someone in the head of the company antagonizing them.
Yea I'm sure all western developers hated Iwata. And it's a premature conclusion. We don't know the amount of support the switch will actually have until it's been out for a while.

Of course it's more complex but here are two reasons:

The Wii couldn't run ps360 games even if it wanted to.

The Wii U sold like shit and was hard to port to.

While this has my interest i seriously can not see myself playing games from some of these publishers on that controller layout. I will be having to move my hand to press some of those buttons above what is usually the stick used for camera control. What idiot thought it would be wise to stick those right above it rather than slightly off to the side like an xbox/ps4 layout.

Its going to drive me mental.

You can play any game with the Switch Pro Controller. There are options for your tastes.

Sometimes it looks like people are kind of uncomfortable about the possibility of Nintendo getting even a tiny third party support.
Why not persona 5? "lol no"
Monster hunter? "Yeah now with HD assets it sure won't stay exclusive"
Ff7r? "ho not likely because reasons"
Re7? "nope"

Sigh...

We are just surprised that after WiiU people still fall for a list like this.

Thats 3DS , this is Wii U

screenshot2016-10-211afl8e.png

This was 2012 right? That list is pretty barren especially before the system came out.

Let's hope the third parties actually stick with Nintendo this time.

I think people are looking at this wrong.

Yes, the WiiU had terrible 3rd party support. I can't imagine anyone is debating that.

But the 3DS had very good support (not as good as the DS but nothing did).

Those companies that supported the 3DS will likely continue on to the Switch. I can't think of a compelling reason they wouldn't. In fact with Vita likely not getting a successor, I can see more devs moving their support to the switch.

Western 3rd party I can understand the trepidation. Even when the DS was in beast mode they ignored it. And I can see a lot of them dropping the platform if the sales aren't there. But if the sales ARE there and they have common engines to port to, why wouldn't they support the switch? Unless the bad blood is indeed thicker than money.

They don't deserve the benefit of the doubt regarding third parties. They have said in the past that they will have constant third parties games than nothing. I think it's more of I will believe it when I see it if Nintendo actually keeps the third parties releasing games because historically they don't have the support since the N64.

3DS, DS and Gameboy Advance shows u that their handheld had crazy good third parties support.

Certainly progress but remember Bethesda came out and said that wasn't a game coming to NX and they have nothing to announce.

They specifically said it wasn't "confirmed", I wouldn't be surprised if they announced it anyway when Nintendo has its blowout in January.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Certainly progress but remember Bethesda came out and said that wasn't a game coming to NX and they have nothing to announce.

Likely already part of the marketing. Like when companies already decided to localize a game but say " Well if enough people ask for it or bring it up we might do something about it".

PS: None of the games shown in the teaser were "confirmed" - NIntendo didnt confirm a new Mario, Splatoon etc. either nor did Take 2 confirm NBA2k.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Seems like a bit of it is fluff just to pad out that wall.

"unity"? Ok

That one mention of Unity on the wall single-handedly represents dramatically more third-party support than all the big publishers listed put together.

Because the context surrounding these situations is completely different and the level of success of a previous system doesn't rate in the full list of considerations going into these decisions? "It's because Yamauchi and Iwata died" is just spectacularly poor analysis.

To add to that, they could simply like what they see with the hardware and are genuinely excited. The past is the past and as long as a new opportunity presents itself, that warrants another look at their options.

So, if I'm getting this right, this is the comparison:

That Wii U list is absolutely abysmal! Holy cow, it's even worse than I remembered.

In hindsight, E3 2012 was an even bigger disaster for Nintendo that it seemed at the time...and it felt pretty horrible even in the moment.

Really need Person 5 on this thing - i dont know how involved Atlus already is but man it would be awesome if they dont wait until the "Fes" type update for a Switch version.

I know Two Tribes mentioned they would be looking at future consoles on top of PS4 after they canned Rive for Wii U.

I'd love to see that happen and along with Yooka Laylee.

The more I think about it, I would like to play Red Dead 2 on this as well. I doubt it's coming, but it would be happy if it was.

I wanted to say it really sucks ass these third party devs still can't talk about what games they have coming to N Switch...that's like my only letdown since we seemingly have to wait another 2.5 months for news lol

Huh?

Because the context surrounding these situations is completely different and the level of success of a previous system doesn't rate in the full list of considerations going into these decisions? "It's because Yamauchi and Iwata died" is just spectacularly poor analysis.

The difference is that the new management isn't antagonizing third-parties or sounding arrogant the way they were back when. Yes, Iwata was antagonistic toward third-parties with quotes like this:

Satoru Iwata said:
We don't believe in overwhelming third party support. Frequently, developers use our platforms solely for their own self-interests, so it's hard to form management relationships.

and this:

Satoru Iwata said:
If the next generation platforms are going to create even more gorgeous looking games using further enhanced functionality, and if that next-gen market can still expand the games industry, then I'm afraid that third-parties may not support Nintendo

and this

Satoru Iwata said:
We just don't care too much about what other companies are doing or are trying to do.

Yamauchi admitted at the 2001 Space World event that he had deliberately ordered the N64 be difficult to develop for. The intention behind this was to discourage untalented third-party developers from releasing poor-quality games

I'm glad Kimishima is avoiding doing statements and decisions like this. [so far]

I expect most of these companies to come out with atleast 1 game in the first 8 months and this is what I would bet on for each company.

  • 505 Games - Rocket League, Freaktown
  • Activision Publishing, Inc. - Skylanders Versus, 2 Obligatory Movie tie ins (Power Rangers, Fast 8 and Transformers the most likely), King's next mobile entry.
  • ARC SYSTEM WORKS Co., Ltd. - New IP
  • ATLUS CO., LTD. - [2 of these 3] Etrian spinoff, Devil spinoff, Persona Spinoff
  • BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Inc. - 3 Obligatory Anime tie Ins. I expect trash but I'm hoping for FLCL being one of them.
  • Bethesda - Skyrim, Fallout Shelter Switch, TES: Legends, Dishonored 2 Complete edition
  • CAPCOM CO., LTD. - [2 of these 4] Ace Attorney, Monster Hunter, Powerstone (or a spiritual successor), New IP.
  • Codemasters® - F1 2017

  • Epic Games Inc. - Fortnite
  • Frozenbyte - Shadwen
  • GameTrust - 1 or 2 unknown Indie projects
  • Gungho Online Entertainment, Inc. - ports of 3 of their recently made mobile games
  • HAMSTER Corporation - ports of retro arcade games
  • INTI CREATES CO., LTD. - Azure Striker Gunvolt port
  • KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD. - Toukiden 2
  • Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd. - PES 2018, PES Club Manager
  • LEVEL-5 Inc. - Ni No Kuni 2
  • Marvelous Inc. - Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star
  • Maximum Games, LLC - Farming Simulator 17
  • Nippon Ichi Software, Inc. - 3 Sequels 1 New IP (these guys churn out games yearly so don't expect much)
  • SEGA Games Co., Ltd. - Obviously the 2 Sonic games.
  • Spike Chunsoft Co., Ltd. -Danganronpa:spinnoff
  • SQUARE ENIX CO., LTD. Final Fantasy Type-0 Online, Dragon Quest spinoff, new IP
  • Starbreeze Studios - The Walking Dead
  • Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. - Sports games
  • Telltale Games - 2 collections of their existing franchise games made in the last 1.5 years
  • Tokyo RPG Factory Co., Ltd. - Port of Setsuna
  • UBISOFT - Just Dance, New IP (party centric)

  • THQ Nordic - Most likely won't have a game but if they did it would be Battle Chasers.
  • TT Games - I guess nothing will be made in the time frame but I'm unsure of what will be considered a tent-pole movie franchise. For example if Dr Strange blows up to be the next Matrix and Marvel sees Strange as the beginning to replacing the Avengers then I could see a Lego Strange game shoved out in the time frame.
  • Electronic Arts - I'm guessing nothing will be made in the time frame but if there was it would be one of their mobile titles.
  • GRASSHOPPER MANUFACTURE INC.- Nothing will be made in the time frame.
  • FromSoftware, Inc. - Nothing will be made in the time frame.
  • Parity Bit Inc. Nothing will be made in the time frame.
  • PlatinumGames Inc. Nothing will be made in the time frame.
  • Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment - Nothing will be made in the time frame.

I'll imagine they'll give the system one game each og Nintendo is lucky, if those games sell well they'll continue support id not theu'll ditch, I doubt they'll try too hard to ensure success

We are just surprised that after WiiU people still fall for a list like this.

So you want us to be pessimistic and just outright refuse to give these devs more than a year on the console right on the spot? Or just be happy its getting as much more support right out the gate than it did with its two other console launches combined.

I don't see any wisdom in having your brand in a promo video just for kicks. Skyrim might be off the table, but SOMETHING is, and Bethesda isn't exactly well-known for tailor-making experiences for a single piece of hardware, are they?

So, if I'm getting this right, this is the comparison:

MWV2jxf.png

"But we've seen this all before"? Nah, it's exceptionally clear that we haven't.

I hope people note how attractive a mix between 3DS and Vita libraries will be. A fuckton of Japanese support means a fuckton of original software.

3DS side gets the pokemon market, Vita side gets the Waifu market.

You're not looking at the last gasp of Nintendo hardware, you're looking at the last gasp of the Japanese centred ecosystem.

Even the PS4 went all Xbox 360 on us.

The "Skyrim is not confirmed" is the exact same scenario as it was for Dragon Quest XI back in time. And it was confirmed months later. But there was still a lot of pessimists who convinced themselves that it wasn't coming.

Skyrim is coming. No one is allowed to talk about the games they're making for it, which is why there were no game announcements at all...even from Nintendo. There's no way in hell they'd show it in that video if it wasn't coming.

The Switch will probably get games from all of those partners, the only company that didn't support the Wii U outside of VC was Konami and that "Tetris Online" thing, although there is Puyo Puyo Tetris in Japan.

Most of those companies will at least bring "test" games to the console, and some of those partners are purely for software (like Autodesk and havok)

I don't know why people keep saying "but Wii U had the same thing too".

No it didn't. The proof is there when it showed like 10 companies were supporting it only. This list is HUGE. The Switch will definitely be successful and get more third party support than Wii U. SKYRIM alone is better than pretty much any third party game on Wii U.

I think if they can get the big releases that Nintendo doesn't cover then they'll be OK. If it's all party games and weird Japanese titles, the library will be too narrow like Wii U.

Needs at a minimum the yearly sports games, COD/Battlefield and the bigger third party series. I'm thinking multiplayer is going to be a focus so the more big multiplayer games they can get the better.

Wii U had launch games from Koei Tecmo and Activision.

Yeah. Platinum is also not on that list but Wonderful 101 was one of the first of the actual games shown off (despite it not making launch).

There are also some companies not on the Switch list that have come forward since the reveal. (like Zoink Games and Shin'en).

Uhhhhh.... sorry bro.

After the wiiu disaster the simple existence of that list is a miracle

Third parties want as many viable platforms as possible, they don't care who makes it or what their history is if they can sell product there.

Nowadays more than ever.
If people buy games on the Switch and its fairly easy / cheap to port games to it (as all signs seem to suggest it is) it'll have third parties on board.

It does say "sampling" at the top. I wonder what the entire list looks like...

They didn't say that at all. Why are NDAs so hard to understand? It's obvious Nintendo wants the focus to be on the system itself right now. They haven't even announced any of their games officially yet.

My initial reaction was that it was all just PR-talk for NDA's and not being allowed to officially annouce it. This was just a teaser trailer of sorts at the end of the day - I doubt either Nintendo or Bethesda would want to leave what many would consider a pretty big announcement (regardless if it's a remaster of a 5 year old game) as a side-note to some three minute video.

If nothing's said when Nintendo come to actually doing the main Switch Direct (for lack of a better term), then we can start asking questions.
