The more I think about it the more bummed I'm getting about it. It's like I rode the hype I had coming off of Beyond into a brick wall.

Why can't we just have Star Trek: the Next-Next Generation.

I want an Enterprise and I don't want it to be set around the time of the original series, goddamnit.
Because in Canon (ST:O) Data went on to Captain the Enterpeise-E for 25 years or so, the Enterprise-F being captained by a war focused Andorian.

They can't overwrite ST:O as easily, and I have no interest in that Enterprise F monstrosity

Upside, inside out he's livin la vida loca, He'll push and pull you down, livin la vida loca
It still hurts that Pushing Daisies never got a 3rd season.
Same with Dead Like Me, but that one got a movie at least.

In the late 80's/early 90's an episode of TNG cost about 1.3 million to make, one of the most expensive shows on TV at the time. Star Trek ain't cheap. Breaking Bad is in the 2-3 million dollar/episode range. GoT in the 6+ range. But then a lot of episodes wind up being sitting around talking in nice sets a lot of the time. This wouldn't make it hte most expensive show produced - late seasons of ER and Friends ballooned out of control after actors started angling for higher wages.

6-7mln now would be very high, yeah. I guess it's possible if the network was really banking on this being a big hit. How many episodes is it getting?
Well, Netflix has already bought the global distribution rights so Paramount probably got at least a decent deal out of it (like WB did, since Netflix paid like $2M per "Gotham" episode)

WHAT THE FUCK??

Why Fuller, why?

He'll rather focus his attention on an adaptation of a critically acclaimed novel and a relaunch of a beloved classic anthology series which allows creative freedom, rather than deal with the bullshit of headlining a brand new entry in a franchise filled with entitled fans without any self-awareness who will insult him and his family if it does not meet the narrow expectation they have for it in their heads. Can you blame him?! :p

13, which probably makes it easier to spread that cost around as opposed to a full network season.

How did they get Data back?

The only glimmer to this is that Akiva Goldsman was involved in some of the best Fringe episodes:

In 2008, Goldsman joined the first season crew of the FOX horror/mystery series Fringe, as writer, director, and consulting producer. The first episode Goldsman directed and wrote was "Bad Dreams".[11][12] In its fifth season, Goldsman remained a consulting producer. Episodes he contributed to included:

"Bad Dreams" (01.17)
"The Road Not Taken" (01.19) (executive producer Jeff Pinkner and supervising producer J.R. Orci co-wrote a teleplay based on a story by Goldsman)
"There's More Than One of Everything" (01.20) (co-executive producer J.H. Wyman and Pinkner co-wrote a teleplay based on a story by Goldsman and executive producer Bryan Burk)
"A New Day in the Old Town" (02.01) (co-written by co-creator J.J. Abrams)
"Peter" (02.16) (co-showrunners Jeff Pinkner, J.H. Wyman, and supervising producer Josh Singer co-wrote a teleplay based on a story by Pinkner, Goldsman, Singer, and Wyman)
"Brown Betty" (02.20) (co-written by Wyman and Pinkner)
"Over There (Part 1)" (02.22) (co-written with Pinkner and Wyman)
"Over There (Part 2)" (02.23) (co-written by Pinkner and Wyman)
"Subject 13" (03.15) (co-written with Wyman and Pinkner)
"Stowaway" (03.17) (Danielle Dispaltro wrote a teleplay based on a story Pinkner, Goldsman, and Wyman)
"Lysergic Acid Diethylamide" (03.19) (Wyman and Pinkner co-wrote a teleplay based on a story by Wyman, Goldsman, and Pinkner)
"The Day We Died" (03.22) (Pinkner and Wyman co-wrote a teleplay based on a story Goldsman, Pinkner, and Wyman)
"Neither Here Nor There" (04.01) (Wyman and Pinkner co-wrote a teleplay based on a story Wyman, Goldsman, and Pinkner)
"Subject 9" (04.04) (co-written by Wyman and Pinkner)
"Making Angels" (04.11) (co-written with Wyman and Pinkner)
"Nothing as It Seems" (04.16) (co-written with Pinkner)
"Letters of Transit" (04.19) (co-written by Wyman and Pinkner)
"Brave New World (Part 1)" (04.21) (co-written by Wyman and Pinkner)
"Brave New World (Part 2)" (04.22) (co-written with Wyman and Pinkner)

On the one hand Westworld had a ton of production problems and delays, and so far the 4 episodes aired are some of the best TV I have seen on network TV. So I don't want to automatically dismiss Trek.

But it really dampers my enthusiasm, seems like they have been constantly making mistakes with this show from the reveal of the ship to the delays and now the showrunner stepping back a bit.

lol well when you put it like that i don't blame him

dealing with fanboys would be the worst.

Posting to subscribe. But it appears I'm already too late.

Also I don't understand why all the new Trek franchises want to be prequels during or before TOS. Even though much of the Galaxy has been broadly explored, there are still a lot of undiscovered areas or regions that had only a passing glance.

**Lite DS9/Voyager spoilers below**:
For example, DS9 only cracked the surface of the Gamma quadrant. And voyager zipped through 75% of the Delta quadrant making much of it essentially "fly over" country. There were no alliances set up with the Federation. There's fertile ground in both the Gamma and Delta quadrant for storylines, IMO.

Also DS9 proved that with good writing you can have a very interesting Star Trek series without the need for constant exploring. It would really be nice to have a post DS9 era Star Trek, but after 20 years, it looks like it's not going to happen for probably another 20 years.

Yeah it kind of seems like the obvious choice especially since this Star Trek is on CBS. Plus never watch the show regularly but didn't he used to write for the show. He probably wants to do something different.

That's too bad. Hopefully the new showrunners can do a good job.
Hopefully this gets things kicked into gear, it seems like Discovery wasn't making much progress.

Akiva Goldsman? How can this guy still get a job? Yes, I now he has an Oscar but his IMDB page is just hilarious.
I guess Uwe Boll isn't available anymore.

Oh well, Star Trek had a good run.

I don't think Star Trek Online is actually canon, though. It's like the novels. In its own timelime.

I was wondering how Fuller would balance his other commitments to running Discovery on a day to day basis, evidently he couldn't.

It's clear that they are trying to find a name actress to headline this show, hence the delay, supposedly Rachel McAdams was being touted for some big TV gigs in the past, maybe they could try and lure her?

Oooof, this has sure killed my hype a lot.

Ah well. Sounds like the production is a bit ooer anyway, and I'm still unsure of how well it'll do anyway. Spose they do have a Netflix deal for the rest of the world. I'll still probably end up watching it on Netflix here in the UK.

I'm still going to watch this because... c'mon it's new Star Trek and I even watched Enterprise, but yeah it's disappointing. My expectations were that it could have been something special. Guess it's time to get off the hype train and sit waiting at the hype bus stop instead.

Meh, I'll still still definitely watch it and still excited since there are a lot of other people involved and Fuller is still involved and the show is following his vision for Trek nonetheless which I trust. The only thing I hate about this is Akiva Goldsman joining... if it wasn't for that I wouldn't mind this much at all. I'd honestly take Rick Berman (yeah, yeah I know) over him any day.

Ugh. With him out, if this was on network tv, I still might've given it a shot. But it being on a subscription service, I'm going to wait on reviews.

Almost every new piece of news about this series is making me less and less excited. I'll still give the new show a chance, but losing Fuller as the showrunner fucking sucks.
