What's pointing towards Sun/Moon Switch Edition?

I think that we will be pleasantly surprised by the launch output for the Switch. The Wii and Wii U launches were so abysmal, Nintendo must know they need to come out strong for what is basically their company reboot.

I mean, it's been 3 years since 3D World, so it is not a stretch to think that the new mario will be a launch game. That right there would solidify the switch as a Day 1 purchase for many.
Wii launched with a new Zelda and Wii sports. Launch window might not have been as good (honestly don't remember) but launch was very good.
If they can repeat Zelda again then it would be the best Nintendo console launch in over a decade.

Well I mean just in terms of games, it was bad. It was definitely propped up by the central gimmick and wii sports, but I think it was still universally considered a mediocre launch lineup.

i think it was considered to be generally okay. twilight princess had rave reviews and wii sports was a good showcase of the platform's potential. excite truck is also literally the best game of all-time, rounding out all of nintendo's offerings, and then there were third-party games that helped bolster it like rayman raving rabbids, metal slug anthology, and super monkey ball 3. at least, those were the six i got right away. then there was considerable downtime between launch and metroid prime 3, including minigame compilations and super paper mario.

can confirm

Honestly Twilight Princess alone is a bigger deal than 90% of launch games. On that front the Wii launch was fine.

Plus nowadays it's easy to undersell it, but Wii Sports was really impressive at the time. Playing it for the first time was so surreal.

One of my biggest Wii regrets is that even though I was aware of it from day 1, I never actually got around to playing Excite Truck. I heard great things about it though.

That's definitely not what you should be expecting. Pikmin 4 and Pokemon Sun / Moon are forum rumors more than anything. You should be expecting something from the Nintendo Land / Wii Play team though.

Myamoto said in a interview Pikmin 4 was close to finished (This was before the 3DS spinoff announcement, although I think they are different games). I agree the Pokemon Sun / Moon was a bit of a stretch. Any idea what kind of game the Nintendo Land Play might be developing?

It's time to accept that Retro is the DKC dev going forward. They won't work on anything else until the series stops selling.

Which also means that Nintendo still doesn't care about appealing to western gamers. sigh

What a dumb, presumptuous, and factually incorrect thing to say.

DKCTF took 3 years to make and struggled to sell 1 million after like 2 years.

I used Nintendo's previous two Nintendo Direct presentations for 3DS and Wii U launch and discuss potential launch dates for Switch in March. If anyone wants to listen: Link.

Interesting. Let's see what the date will be. Shame that it's such a long wait but it's great that it's been announced.

Wii launch was good to me. I remember I've bought Red Steel at dayone and I was impressed by the possibility of the Wiimote, also had a lot of fun playing it. Wii Sports was also incredible for that time and was included. Finished that, I've bought Zelda and Excite Trucks, both awesome games.

Yes, I hope Switch launch will be at least at this level and if Zelda BOTW is a launch game (pretty sure it will be), I'l be happy.

Don't see them only giving NA only 660k it's too small of a number for a big region like NA 800k 600k and 600k seems more like it. Also Nintendo stop Sunday releases because of Gamestop disinterested in having Midnight releases on a Sunday which is why the New 3ds Super Smash Bros 4 Pokemon R&S Splatoon all released on a Friday in NA.

I really, REALLY can't wait for this presentation. Nintendo doing something this big and showy is crazy. Plus I feel like from all we know about the time Nintendo has had to get a strong lineup in place (combined with Emily Roger's predictions about healthy software,) I feel like bombs are going to be dropping all over the place, and that's just the games. Who knows what other hardware or OS features will be revealed? I honestly never thought we would see this kind of fanfare and spectacle from Nintendo going forward.

Everything about the Switch's genesis thus far has been amazing to me. Awesome design, awesome potential, appeals a LOT to me, and now a giant presentation with a TriForce fortress where they are blowing the lid off this thing?

SHAMONE!!!!

Sorry, I just had to happy rant for a minute, friends.

i think zelda might be holiday 2017. the wii u version would obviously be a small release, which might be their only concern, but they could just make it a 'switch game' by delaying it further into the year.

or they could release it in the summer: hit with mario, splatoon, and a new ip at launch, and save zelda, pikmin 4, and smash bros. for the immediate months afterwards. mario kart seems like it would be a holiday title, but three years is enough to develop and complete it for launch or launch window as well.

I think Mario Kart is pretty imperative at launch, unless there's another big multiplayer game. They've got to sell that straight-out-of-the-box multiplayer aspect of the system.

And I think Zelda's gotta be there as well, just based on how long it's been in development, and how much it helped sell the Wii for more seasoned gamers, for instance.

I am hoping Mario Kart 8.5 is a pack in. It seems like a low-investment way to make the Switch reach a mainstream audience.

I really, really don't see Mario Kart not being at launch for two reasons:

1. Based on what we've seen from the trailer and heard from Emily Rogers, it's not a new game build fully from the ground up, it appears to be an enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 with new content.
2. And on that note, the Mario Kart 8 team must of had a lot of time on their hands. MK8's last DLC pack was all the way back in April 2015, over a year ago. That's plenty of time to add new characters, tracks and other extra goodies.

Point 2 is why I can see Smash Switch being delayed for a couple of months (contrary to Serkan Toto saying it would come at launch). Sakurai just wrapped up Corrin and Bayonetta at the beginning of this year and may need more time to add extra stuff (I really can't see them doing a straight port of Smash Wii U considering Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon are getting more content).

You also had stuff like DBZ Tenkaichi 2 showing that you could take games that existed on other consoles and improve upon them with motion controls.

It was a solid launch.

No way, Zelda has to be a launch game. I think the only reason it was even delayed was to move it to the Switch's launch date.

I don't think Zelda will miss launch...well, at least be out before November.
It's been in the works for and unless Nintendo got a huge game to replace it the launch line up of theirs is going to be rough
He didn't seem to be when he was arguing with me about it a couple of months before the Eurogamer leak
I think most people didn't think it was going to be a hybrid.
I didn't until the EG leak.
SMD64's leak didn't help despite him clearly reading too much into the information he got like he kept doing for months

But I'm guessing you also didn't adamantly argue against those who thought it might be, right? That's the difference

if the switch reveal is an indication, i think mario might be multiplayer like 3d world.

zelda's been listed as '2017' while switch is 'march 2017'. at e3 they were clarifying that there was no month set for zelda yet, only the year.

i think it could come out in march, but right now they could be weighing their options. it might not even be zelda that needs to be completed. perhaps there is a holiday 2017 game but right now the release date is iffy. they can push it back several months like they did with mario kart 8 and fill out the rest of the year accordingly.

Jan 12th US time huh? That's a Thursday, after the new year, meaning I get all my vacation and call-ins back.

I'm not sure if it's worth taking the day off work or not. It's not like I plan on finishing out the year at my current factory since I'm moving from OH to AZ next year...hmm...

We'll see. Impress me, Nintendo. You have my undivided attention on your next best thing.

I think the overall software output will be insane. I won't be surprise if we end up with 10 Nintendo 1st party games until the end of the year. Here is what I expect to be shown at the event:

-Zelda: Breath of the Wild
-3D Mario
-Mario Kart 1.5
-Splatoon 1.5
-Super Smash Bros + DLC
-Super Mario Maker
-Pikmin 4
-Retro Game (It's been a long time since Tropical Freeze)
-Pokken + DLC
-Pokemon Sun & Moon Port

What's even more crazy is the fact this lineup is expected and not far fetched at all, considering the information we have until the moment.

Oh shit, this would be a damn solid reveal. A damn solid lineup.

Actually checked his twitter a few hours ago and he ate some crow, but is still incredibly critical of the Switch.

I just checked too...and oh god, he's taken something horribly out of context

I really hope he doesn't cling to his "Switch is an accessory" theory, otherwise he's going to be let down once again...

This will be the first console I've planned on getting at launch in well, ever. That may change if launch games don't have a standout non Wii U port title sans BOTW, but as far as I'm concerned it's goin down come March launch for my wallet.

How is supermetaldave these days? And I havent seen 10k either

10k's fine. He was never had sources to begin with besides other insiders like Supermetaldave. He was back and forth between thinking Ninty was using an Nvidia chip while SMD kept telling him it was AMD.

Supermetaldave still thinks Nintendo is going to make a super powerful x86 console like the PS4. Poor soul.

They very well might make a super powerful console, but not for the next 5 years, at least.

I shared SMD's hopes, but in retrospect, it was more out of fear that Nintendo wasn't going to use the best mobile hardware they could get their hands on. That fear of mine was unsubstantiated, so now I'm waiting for January to really get an idea of what we're in for.

Switch was not meant to be an immediate solution to Nintendo's troubles, and unlike most people who discussed it at the time (SMD included) or discussing it now, I was very conscious of that. There is no silver bullet for all of Nintendo's problems and it's ridiculous to ever think or behave as though there is. But it appears to be a great first step in resolving some of their biggest issues, so I'm tenuously optimistic.

Jesus. Is he doing it on purpose or is he that bad at reading comprehension? Even taken out of context, the quote doesn't even mean what he says. "Them" =/= the Switch.

this is also what I'm expecting at the absolute minimum. tons of Wii U/3DS ports.

wouldn't be surprised if we saw a new 2D Mario or animal crossing, either. it's about time we got a new one of each.

also probably gonna get some outta nowhere third party games. I'm thinking an exclusive Platinum game, one or two games where third parties use Nintendo properties (think Hyrule Warriors or SMTxFE), and maybe a Square game.

We got a 2D Mario last year and Super Mario Run/Mario Maker 3DS later this year. Don't think we need a new one for awhile.
Platinum being on the list should mean they're working on something for it. Could be Neir or Grandblue though someone noted that Grandblue's publisher wasn't listed.
I think most of their teams are busy with the Rising team on Neir and Kamiya's team on Scalebound. Bayonetta 2's director is free, though...unless he's on Grandblue

I must have missed that one

note that I don't count level design tools or mobile games

the last real 2d mario made by a nintendo team was from 2012. we'll be coming up on 5 years since then. it's time for a new 2d mario.

and when I say new, I most certainly don't mean New Super Mario Bros. time to change that aesthetic up. it can live on via mobile or mario maker, but for nintendo's new 2d mario there needs to be a change.
