Nintendo First-Party Thread: The Teams, The Games, The Future

Yeah, this can be their supposed 3DS successor (who said this and where, Kimishima or a rep?) that's very Japan-focused. I don't think Japanese gamers will care at all for the dock. Just make sure all Japanese games are still made for the dock in mind which I think is the point.
I also think Nintendo wants Japan to care for the dock but is setting it up so it doesn't matter if they don't. They're trying a similar technique to Wii U to encourage Japanese at-TV gaming, while also being able to sell the thing as a portable even if that fails. But I still think they'd like it to succeed. That's the Famicom market and I think they still care about it, given all the effort these last 15 years with Wii and then (fruitlessly) with Wii U. Think that was half seeking revenge on Sony in a failing market and half just wanting to save that market, even when N64 set them up to do well in west along lines Xbox would go on to take.

Outside of Retro, Headstrong and Next Level, their western development division is very underwhelming and insuficient, and still those devs make games that looks very close to Nintendo's own titles aesthetics or even their own IP's. They should have more internal devs appealing to the western crowd, like they did in the SNES and N64 days.

They might have secured Tantalus Media (Australia) into that small fold. But we definitely need a western developer making a Nintendo racer and FPS to compliment the usual IPs.

For those who notice the missing production teams (6# and #8), one of them is the Brain Age team, the other might be the Wii Sports / Nintendo Land team. I'm not sure if Goro Abe (WarioWare) is getting an internal production group or an external management group.

They helped develop Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Mario Kart, Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon, Paper Mario RPGs and various different WarioWare games as well as Fire Emblem and Advance Wars in the past. Certainly more diverse than what they're doing right now.

And over this time, Metroid is burn in the hell it deserved, No one remember Tetris Attack, Wario Ware is dead as well as Advance War while FE is such a huge thing now.

No one give a crap about diversity if it flop bruh.

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their Switch.

The words I want to see is new switch versions of pilotwings wave racer animal crossing new toad game cruisin and hotly rumoured a new l uigis mansion.

What do you want?
Frankly, now that an open-world Zelda is coming, my new #1 fantasy game is a 2.5D Super Metroid-style Metroid game. I certainly won't complain about a new Metroid Prime of course, but pesonally Super Metroid >>> any Metroid Prime game all day err day.

Aside from the more common names, I would love to see a new Pro Wrestling by Syn Sophia and Punch Out by NLG. Please Nintendo. Punch Out Wii was fantastic, and I'd love to have a good wrestling game on a current system.

Subbed. Thank you so much, Ninja, for creating this thread, and thank you to all who are intelligently contributing. Threads like these are why I joined GAF in the first place; I feel really proud to be surrounded by enthusiasts and experts.

The things I'll be most excited about are Spla2n, a new Rhythm Heaven, Monster Hunter, a new Pokken Tournament, 3D Mario and Mario Kart, and all of the solid Wii U ports and VC titles. I can't wait to make this my ultimate all-in-one Nintendo machine.

Yes I am with you there, with regard to making switch the ultimate nintendo all in one machine. I am not all about specs etc give me fun gameplay anyday but come on nintendo get those all important red party games to get everyone buying and supporting your next gen console.

Well. I guess Noise isn't coming back to roost any time soon. Bizarre that they made not-custom robo for Squenix.

I did hear something about TOSE preferring to remain uncredited. Too bad that Starfy is a jointly-owned IP.

I don't think the IP/ Trademark is co-owned, they just get game copyright credits with Nintendo. I could be wrong but that's often how Nintendo does it.

I've always understood Starfi to be one of the few co-owned Nintendo properties along with Kirby (HAL) and Pokémon (Game Freak/Creatures).

I didn't realize there were so many separate teams. It's really nice to have that all laid out. Thanks a bunch, OP!

The fact that the vast majority of these teams will be working on a single platform (while some will possibly work on mobile) makes me really excited, in all honesty. It's clear that the Wii U and 3DS have modest lineups for the end of their lifespans of game systems, with the latter having okay support and the former looking as if it'd been mostly abandoned. I won't be surprised if Nintendo has A LOT to talk about in January and beyond in terms of the projects their teams are working on.

Switch should be great. There are clearly a large number of internal developers at Nintendo working on projects for the system, whether these projects were completely tailored to that new hardware or were moved over from Wii U once Nintendo saw the writing on the wall.

I'm most excited to see what Retro is working on, and I'm sure I'm not alone. But I also wonder what the Mario Kart and Splatoon teams are working on beyond just enhanced Switch versions of MK8 and Splatoon (I recognize that MK9 and Splatoon 2 are likely at some point). That said, those series will likely continue to be Nintendo's bread and butter so I doubt we'll see something new from them. But, after the brilliance of those games, can we really ask for anything more risky? Let them do what they've already done so well.

This leaves a lot of question marks for the other teams, but that's what keeps me so involved and enticed as a Nintendo fan. There's potential for interesting content both familiar and new. The wait until Q1 and Q2 (for further updates) will be painful if only because I'm so damn curious.

Nintendo should easily release updated versions of Super Mario Maker, Super Mario 3D World, Super Smash Bros., Splatoon, Captain Toad and Mario Kart 8 for Switch. This should be one of the easiest decisions for Nintendo to make.

Not to worry because as seen in the Switch's reveal trailer, Nintendo already has the bolded covered. Smash is heavily rumored as well.

Smash Bros, Mario Kart, and Splatoon are important because of their multilplayer communities. Single player (or local multiplayer) games would nice at some point, but they don't have the same value to Nintendo. You also don't want to flood the console with retail ports.

Solid thread. Subbed. Quite a lot to keep track of and I'm sure Switch has a lot in the pipeline that we have not yet seen.

A lot of my interest is in Monolith Soft and Retro Studios though, not the more central teams.

Wow, this thread actually made me google Brownie Brown. Never saw their logo anymore and now I discovered they changed names.

Shame. Their GBA/DS games were all pretty solid.

This is what makes Switch a good move for Nintendo and Intelligent Systems. Over time as games required more resources to develop, developer's output and diversity has decreased. Nintendo's most succesful consoles, in terms of marketshare, were well supported by Nintendo such as the NES, SNES, and Wii. The major problem has been that they have had to support both handheld and consoles as every Nintendo device post-SNES has had major software droughts.

I'm excited for what games Intelligent Systems will release for Switch as they now won't have to worry about releasing different entries in the same franchise on handhelds and consoles so they could expand their portfolio. Not to say that this means instant success for Nintendo. However, I'm interested in seeing Nintendo's output especially since SSB(probably), MK, Zelda, 3D Mario, and Splatoon appear to be releasing early in the Switch's life cycle. While some of those will likely have followup DLC; I don't think the DLC will take all staff resources to support. I recall hearing rumors that Nintendo wanted to support the younger staff in developing new ips and heading projects.

Another benefit of the unified platform is lateral technology experience distribution.

What one team builds and implements will be readily much more useful to a lot more teams than before. So games will advance faster and better on one game than before.

Nintendo is a co-owner of the actual IP.

No, that is misreported nonsense all coming from that one horror site years ago. We have no evidence that this is actually the case. They only co-own the games that were made since IV. Like how they don't own the Bayonetta IP but Bayo2 is locked down with them.

I still can't believe that Nintendo has such a few western teams, and basically Retro is the only relevant one (I am talking strictly 1st party here). They desperately need at least 2-3 western teams in the vein of Retro to diversify their output, or at least expand Retro so they can work on multiple projects and new IPs.

Do you not understand the years and the work he put in to get to that position? What kind of disrespect is this

I understand how/why he got there. I also understand he forgot how to make the series that was his former claim to fame. I don't care about Wario Ware, or Tomodachi, or Rhythm Heaven or Miitomo, or whatever casual fart button game he comes up with. I care about Metroid. But it's clear that he no longer does.

From my perspective it seems pretty evident that Nintendo is only marginally interested in Western game development. They had multiple opportunities to buy out faltering game studios or build completely new ones over the last decade but they didn't. I think it's very misguided but what do I know.

Please never disrespect Rhythm Heaven like that again.

I wonder, do you think Intelligent Systems have had enough time to show us a Fire Emblem in January?

The series is moving to HD for the first time. I'm really excited.

I would assume they have a hand in FE on Mobile, so I'm not expecting anything.

........dissing wario ware....... u are dead to me.T_T(U know what, u all Metroid fans is really making me hating the series even moar lol.)

Their experience with Rare and Retro employee exodus scared them badly. After Metroid Prime, many of the devs of that game move out of the company which makes all the training and employees development goes to the drain. At least in Japan, employees rarely move out of the company so they can hold the talent with them as long as possible.

When it comes to both Rare and Retro, I think people really, really exaggerate about how many people they lost.

In Rare's case, people like to say "ALL THE GOOD PEOPLE LEFT AROUND 2001" or whatever, but that's not really the case. It's true that a lot of the team that worked on Goldeneye and Perfect Dark left to form Free Radical, but that's pretty much it. All the other key people, such as Tim and Chris Stamper, Gregg Mayles, Chris Suthorland, Chris Seavor, Grant Kirkhope, and what not were still there by the time Rare was bought out by Microsoft. It wasn't until afterwards that a lot of them began to slowly leave, but they were all there under Rare's tenure with Nintendo.

Likewise, how many really important people left Retro, exactly? Just Mark Pacini and some artists, right? People act like it was such a devastating blow to Retro and now they can't make a new Metroid Prime or whatever, but I think that's silly. Mr. Pacini admitted in an interview that Metroid Prime was essentially a game that came from the east and the west. He literally admitted that if it weren't for Nintendo's guidance, the game wouldn't of turned out nearly as good. It goes to show, just look at the games he was involved with over at Armature, such as Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate or ReCore.

Any word if Nintendo:

1) Will have some of their smaller developers collaborate together on larger scale projects. Several of their smaller Japanese developers are past Square-Enix and Sega employees that worked on the Mana, Chrono Trigger, Shining, Super Mario RPG, and Dragon Quest series. They are probably too small to work on large scale projects like those on their own, but maybe if they were partnered, it would be possible. We have already seen some evidence of this with Vanpool and Good Feel assisting Alpha Dream on various Mario & Luigi titles.

2) Is looking to licence IPs from third parties and let some of their contract developers who have had pervious experience with them work on them. Some examples would be Good Feel (Castlevania, Goemon, Contra), Arzest or Prope (Sonic), Valhalla Game Studios (Ninja Gaiden, Rygar), Inticreates (Megaman), Grezzo (Mana), NDCube (Hudson IPs), etc.
