Nintendo Switch Presentation - January 12th

I want the digital backwards compatibility so badly. Not having a Wii U, that is a deal breaker for me. (Wii U still costs too much considering that I'm interested in just few games, and I don't really like the console)

There is no way the basic package price is over 299, it would be basically DoA. Even 299 seems pushing it, but a pack in game would offset it somehow.

They aren't likely to be able to hit 199, so my bet is 249, the same as Wii release price, but I can see a 199 handheld only SKU down the line once the supply chain is not stressed.

The Mii aesthetic is pretty ugly as is the name. So plastic, so generic, so cutesy in a bad way and I'm a man with a bad case of polymorphous perversity :p.

Yeah, I think that contributes also to me growing to dislike them. Mii was perfect for the Wii. And for 3ds. But now seems like a relic from the past. Even on Wii U. Everything else got such nice upgrades, just look at all the other characters in Mario Kart 8 that the Mii just don't fit anymore. Maybe Nintendo will upgrade them somehow to the HD era.

Nintendo Land failed to sell the concept, the other games also weren't a big enough draw in themselves. Wii Sports did sell the concept, plus there was new Zelda as a back up. Switch doesn't really have a concept besides "take anywhere" and pretty much any high quality game can sell that. Doesn't need to be tailored to any specific hardware quirk.

Right. Not only was Nintendo Land (one of my favorite games on Wii U and maybe ever) a botched attempt as far as drawing in appeal, but also NSMBU was hot on the heels of NSMB2 and didn't visually distinguish itself massively from its predecessors, beyond being in HD. Together the two titles provided no significant appeal for the system as unique games whose appeal is conveyed clearly and easily, not to mention the confusing concept of the system itself.

Looking back, seeing how well Smash, MK8, Splatoon and SMM did for Wii U, if those were Y1 games I think Wii U based on momentum would have sold up to 5-10M more units. Especially depending on how they positioned each release. Hindsight is at least 20/40 though so I presume this is a large part of why some or all of those titles seem to be hitting switch much earlier in the console's lifespan. Zelda has a heck of a lot of buzz around it but the franchise prior to E3 this year was not so huge at the moment compared to the other titles above, at least if we look at both the West and Japan. I hope BOTW will do incredibly well, and I think it's poised for massive success, but if for some reason it landed less well it won't hurt Nintendo to have these recently heavy hitters at bat.

So anyone excited that the beginning of 2017 will actually be exciting for Nintendo fans for the first time in a while? The last few years has been so dreary at the beginning of the year. A few big releases here and there and a few ok directs, but overall so little news and just long waits between the holidays and E3. This next year is going to be fun!

Didn't Liam Robertson leak things before?

I just watched a podcast he did a few days ago and he said he knows for a fact that Retro Studios is not working on a new Metroid game

This is big news and it's exactly what I expected.

I know Emily said they weren't doing any Metroid or DK related games, I believe.

Edit. He also said he believes it will be a new IP because of who's rumored to be working with them.

Woah.

I'll always remember him for being the guy that was full of shit and made the Smash Bros. community think we were gonna get Shovel Knight as a DLC character.

But, if we give Liam the benefit of the doubt in this case and also go by this post here, I guess that means Retro's gonna be making yet another Fucking Donkey Kong.

Great news!

EDIT:

Emily herself said that she doesn't exactly trust that rumor.

I was thinking that maybe Retro were offered to do a racing game considering they did the retro tracks for Mario Kart 7 although that was more of a... "Quick we need to get Mario Kart 7 out to save the 3DS".

And unless they really spent 3+ years on a racing game, it's probably something else.

I made an edit. He was very sure they're not working on Metroid for a fact and then he said he believes they're working on a new IP based on a rumor he's heard of them working with someone else.

Not sure who this someone else could be. Maybe a western third party dev?

I kind of hope it's not F-Zero only because I'm not that kind of racing fan lol. Selfishly, I'll take anything else over F-Zero from Retro.

They got to choose between Sakurai and Inafune.

It's a joke but unless it's a well-known developer it'd be hard to imagine they are co-developing with another Studio for a new IP.

That sounds a bit click-baity as far as rumors go... he's heard that they're working with someone else, but can't explain that more? Does he mean a company or person? Different director, producer?

It's a very weirdly phrased rumor, I wouldn't put too much stock into it right now.

Of course this could also just be me being in denial about how they aren't working on StarTropics...

Edit: also how does "new IP because of who's rumored to be working with them" make any sense? Unless he means different IP, not new IP.

I don't have anything against Miis, I just don't like when they include them in games that have nothing to do with them, they were cool on Nintendoland, Miiverse, but totally out of place on Smash, Sonic, Mario, etc... IMO.
How were they out of place in Smash, a game filled with characters from other Nintendo games (with a few third party guests)?

I use to give no shit about Miis. Hated them on the Wii, confused in smash and mario kart.

Tomodachi life changed my perception of them and they have become Nintendo to me like other IPs to an extent.

This is where he said it. They were talking about what may be shown at the January event and Retro was brought up.

Maturity, bitches.
An ugly Mii owner blames the Miis, but the truth is, the real problem is their artistic ability.

As a owner of a degree in the art of Miis, my collection of Miimitations are a sight to behold.

Price?
Additionally, it really surprises me how many people think the Switch will be ~$299. The minimum I think it'll be is $349 with smart money saying it'll be $399 for a base model and $449 for a large storage model. Yes, this is a Nintendo system, but it's also a tablet, and it wouldn't surprise me if they attempted to price it in tablet range. I would be pleased as punch if it were $299, but I'm not holding my breath.

This is completely out of touch with reality :D

Which is important to this question. I meant it in a broad sense, i.e. portability concerns, such as size but also battery life, etc. I take your point about specs, though, insofar as it doesn't bleed over into the above.
Any 3DS publisher that thinks Switch will do much worse than a plain handheld successor is betting differently than 3DS's top publisher, though. If Nintendo thought it was a real worry, they'd have no good reason to even try this hybrid route.

Significantly different architecturally, not orders of magnitude more powerful, and lacking the second screen--Wii U emulation on this thing just isn't a reasonable expectation.

Yeah, they absolutely fit in with characters like R.O.B. and Mr. Game & Watch.

I had a dream Retro were working on a spiritual sequel to Goldeneye/Perfect Dark and some of the old Rare guys were helping out with the development.

You're the last one to need any reassurance on this topic, but I just also want to point to my reply to MoonFrog above, here, insofar as I think I saw Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on one of those upscalers and it looked amazing as is. Wouldn't surprise me if that was one of the most HD-ready first (second?) party games on 3DS.

I sense some sort of Moon-bias in this post.

Also, your PMs. Read them :D Plllzzzzzzz^^

This alone guarantees a stronger start for Switch than Wii U ever had a chance to have. People know Zelda is coming. Very soon. And they've seen it. And they're still exicted lol.

Wii launch, you had seen Mario Galaxy already. That was always on the schedule, Zelda was launch. With Wii U you only had this vague "too good to be true maybe going multiplat later" Bayonetta 2 looming in the background and some ominous "new monolithsoft project" (talking pre-launch, so before they even showed the infamous X teaser). There was nothing from the top shelf besides Pikmin 3 to really concretely look forward to at the time.

Things are already different now.

Tablet range is like... $50 to 700. I'm sure it'll be in there.

Closest product to Switch is the Shield Tablet, though, which launched at $300 and has been $200 since last year.

Retro is making another Donkey Kong Country, but starring Miis instead.

I don't even give a fuck. Retro making Donkey Kong whatever = sign me the fuck up! Watch all the other video games crying in the corner like last time.

Quick distinction, they provided environment art to the retro tracks. They didn't actually program anything. Either way, I doubt Nintendo has Retro Studios working on a racing game. They reserve non-Mario Kart racers to a smaller budget. If it even clears publishing!

They said price was a big issue with Wii U. No way they gonna make the same mistake again. PS4 and X1 are already far below 299€. With inferior hardware and fewer games, they will not price the Switch out of the market.
Wii U essentially launched at $350 with how unappealing they made the Basic unit. Launching at $299 with a pack in could work though they will be dangerously close to PS4 Slim. $250 is recommended but they can't make it a bad value system if they do the deluxe thing again.
I still maintain that Switch will be 250 max, and that's with a pack in new IP. But I wouldn't be surprised if they went for the killer punch even lower than that.
I think 250 is a great price, $300 is also possible, though. Either way I'd also recommend a pack in

Well, I guess ports will be my last hope.

You're putting way too few titles into each year, in particular the launch year where we're bound to get 2-3 titles at launch.

Breath of the Wild
3D Mario
Splatoon 2
Mario Kart 9
Retro Studios' project

Animal Crossing
Pikmin 4

Personally I would like to see both a new Metroid Prime and a new Donkey Kong Country from Retro on the Switch.

The problem is, Retro isn't that large a developer. They can only really make one game every few years.

That's what makes people rather apprehensive about the prospect of a new DKC game by them. If they put resources into that, it would take away from being able to make a new Metroid game or an all new IP altogether.

I'm seeing PS4 Slim with 1 free game for £230 in the UK

Nintendo should be aiming for a £200 price point to compete. In the US that would be $250.

Liam Robertson has not always been reliable in the past. He seems to have a tendency to jump the gun with uncertain or speculative things from his sources. What Retro is working on is still up in the air at this point.

This wasn't about ports so much as VC things. But specifically ALBW: no way, don't see it.

Well, what reason is there to not make 3DS VC or ports if they could run? Wii U has almost every Zelda ever on it, why not have everything from both there and 3DS on Switch? These games are evergreen sellers, may as well get them on the system if they can. Some of the VC games will potentially be only playable on the go (DS VC for example). Unless they use IR to mirror touch for those but I don't know how much effort that is.

Hmm, read more ramblings about Zelda not being at launch. I don't like this.

Where at?

She also said on Twitter she wasn't confident in her Retro Studios rumor because it came from second hand sources.

Unlike her Switch/NX info which came directly from people working on NX/Switch.

Yeah. At this point everyone is seeing BOTW as the big launch title for Nintendo Switch. It'll be a huge letdown if the game doesn't launch when NS does and it could affect the initial sales since everyone is looking forward to play it on day one after the BOTW footage shown on the First Look trailer of the Switch. It makes me wonder if the game is still going into serious development problems or Nintendo simply wants to outdone themselves and make the greatest game ever and they are taking their time with it.

As upset as I'd be if Zelda isn't at launch, I could deal with it if 3D Mario is coming on day one.

If neither hits launch, WTF

Also, MAN, if BotW isn't at launch, Wii U owners continue to get screwed over, as they'll be waiting even longer for this game to release on their system.
