You either agreed with the views or didn't care enough about them (or the people they effected). I don't know how that's debatable.
The second group can possibly be reached without coddling or tolerating the hate. Hopefully. But honestly the ones who just sat out are probably more important to reach.

I agree. But people aren't necessarily scumbags for having different priorities. It depends on what those priorities are. If you voted for Trump because he wants to build a wall to keep mexicans out then yes, you are a scumbag. If you voted for him because you believe that climate change is a hoax, you are an idiot. If you voted for Trump because your livelihood has been destroyed and he said he'll do something about it, I understand.
But...
Regardless of which policy mattered to you, it came WITH the racist policy. You'd have to think "meh, not important"

I read up on the situation in rural america and it seems that a large part of it is in dire straights.There are no jobs, factories are closing, companies are leaving. The rust belt in particular was hit pretty hard. Is this accurate or have I been misinformed?
I've heard this before too many times, and even then there was a thread about on this very forum about someone who believed that was how it always was.
Who votes for someone who they believe is lying and being deceitful on purpose!?

I'm not sure I'd understand that, as he never actually had any real details on anything, but whatever.
Either way, I mean...it is what it is. Not caring enough about the lives of people affected by racism and hate speech is still a fact. Handwringing about how nicely you treat that is still parsing out how tolerant you want to be about that fact. It is the absolute wrong lesson to learn here.

I hope at least some lesson is learned because the whole world is heading down a seriously dark path. Extreme right-wing parties are gaining ground all over Europe, the UK exited the EU and the US elected Trump. We need some sort of change to defuse the situation. As it stands, another war is no longer an impossibility.

A lot of my friends are scrambling for excuses as to why they didn't vote: DNC screwed Bernie, system is rigged, both candidates are corrupt anyway, etc.

1) Don't pile on the guilt by name calling or blaming
2) You and them need to come to terms with the sickening reality and mobilize to see what can be done next.
3) Start energizing the your friends for the midterms - damage control

You don't. You accept the decision they made and you persuade them to actually vote for something that matter the next time they get the chance.
Congratulate them. They fucked the system. And thousands of people along with it. There are real life effects now, even before he sets foot into the office. The system needed and needs change, but I'd rather keep the system alive than risking the whole world.

Not voting is always personally the rational choice. One vote never* matters and you not voting does not make other people stay home as well.
If you want to invest effort in the election you'd be often more efficient in doing something to motivate or persuade others.
I always vote, but realize it is only out of principle.
This is such a load of fucking crap. There is more on the ballot than just the President of the United States, there are issues that will affect your local community greatly.
Trump won. There are no trolls anymore people really believe this type of shit.

I think that people saying we should not tolerate Trump's hate full-stop and those saying we should understand Trump supporters are constantly talking past one another. Trump undoubtedly ran on a platform of hate and anyone who voted for him undoubtedly carries some prejudice to allow them to make that vote. HOWEVER, not every single person who voted for Trump voted for him because of the hate, and may have voted for Democrats in the past. There is a segment of Trump's voting bloc that can be reasoned with and educated. Trump's hate should absolutely not be tolerated and taking action to make a stand against it involves changing the minds of some of the people who voted for him. Yelling at them and telling them they're in bed with the KKK, even when the KKK is dancing in the streets due to Trump's victory, may very well lead to a second term.

Well, the mass media was definitely not on his side. What is hilarious that despite all the hate, all those crazy claims and fantastic quotes he was able to defeat Hillary without her level of "background" support. (though I found it funny that people believe in russian hackers breaking through voting to elect Trump lololo)
And he ought to. After all everything he was doing was on the sole purpose to defeat Clinton's camp. If he was average candidate he would not make it for sure. Too much power disparity.
But his aggresive quotes, his insane claims - everything was for the sole purpose to successfullly oppose Clinton's propaganda. It was simply majestic. Democrates were simply obliterated. I am not sure when they will be able to get back on track now.
I am from the "other side of the moon" though I have always been USA supporter, it was painful to watch how weak it has became from the point of view of other major powers. I don't know what americans think from the inside, but for me as outsider it was pretty much obvious that America became a joke.
Clinton is competent? LoL. She might have the experience but...
Now with the republicans at the wheel at least USA will be tougher.
What I am afraid of that Trump won't be able to handle political level. Hope his advisors will help him with it.
P.S. I am actually not that tolerant so I am kinda support Trump's points too on that regard. We have similar issue in our country. At least minorities stay minor there lol
