Laura Dale: 2 Switch SKUs planned, UK Retailer GAME will sell at £199.99 and £249.99

So 300 euro if you actually want to play something, might explain that rather low 2M target.

2 million is low for what amounts to 2-3 weeks of sales? (The target was for end of fiscal year, IIRC, which would be March). And it's 250 with a potential pack in game. Not 300 to 'play something.'

anyway, lol game. keep on doing stupid things pls

It's extremely conservative for 2 weeks of launch sales.

its decent enough for 2 weeks but not huge, I'd suspect they wanted to lowball slightly so they have a number they can easily beat, i'd expect a launch shipment of about 2million which they'd probably hope to sell out straight away with 1 restock (maybe of a million) before the end of march

why not, we played with Wiimotes and nunchuks with just a cable joining them

The difference is we haven't seen any way to charge the joycons separately, while the wiimote just used AA batteries. It's been speculated that the joycon grip will act as a charger when they're not connected to the Switch itself.

It would be weird if you can't play while docked if the joycons need charging.

Ugh, not happy about this news. The two-SKU thing needs to go away.

$199 or $249 would have been the sweet spots. I suppose this is going to be like Wii U, where the cheaper option is obviously compromised in some way (such as 8GB of internal storage instead of 32GB), and represents an awful value compared to the more expensive option. Not to mention, if demand is high, it means some folks are going to be stuck with the compromised version if they don't feel like waiting.

They are coming off a system that just sold 15 million over years. Yes it was a failure, but 2 million isn't really conservative for two weeks of sales considering what they are coming off of.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
For Nintendo's sake, I hope the "basic" SKU is what is really pushed- if mass market sees this as a $250 console that's a huge win.

Where is the $300 coming from? $250 should be the max. Anything near $300 is suicide.

Anything higher than 150$ means they're doomed. /s

The Joycon's look to be smaller than the Wiimote and Nunchuck. I'm sure they're fine to use when you're on the go and using the portable as your screen but I think most people would prefer a larger pad when playing on the TV.

Besides, all the promotional pics so far have shown off the Joycons attached to the grip. i think it will be included. The grip probably costs them next to nothing and while it's no Pro controller, i'm sure it'll be "good enough" for most people.

the guy in the video seemed to be pretty comfortably playing with them separate, it really strikes me as a non essential that could be included in the premium and sold as an extra to the plebs

Nintendo has a new game for launch in the same vein as Wii sports and Nintendoland. They might bundle mk8 for the first holiday but not launch

only thing is there's no real input gimmick that they need to sell anyone on like they did with Wii and Wii U

Wii Sports was the motion control/wiimote tech demo

Nintendoland was the asymmetrical gaming/gamepad tech demo

Switch doesn't really need a tech demo to sell people on... Playing on the go, then playing at home on your TV. Zelda, or Skyrim, or GTA (or any MASSIVE, high budget open world game) being playable on the go is as much of a tech demo as you need, I think.

actually yeah charging them could be an issue that leads to grip being included for all

I agree they'll be comfortable, and it'll probably be the way I play the most, but the major reason to include the joycon grip (in my opinion) is for charging the joycons.

Unless there is some other way to charge them while being used in the split control scheme.

I think they could come up with some interesting gameplay revolving around the Switching gimmick. Like local multiplayer outside, maybe involving some streetpass functionality... Or potentially smartphone compatibility.

Wrong on the account that Nintendo can (and mostly likely will) use one of their mini-game series to showcase the 2 player anywhere feature, but also perhaps IR, Camera, Touch games (check out those patents). Nintendo can even make the mini-game comp like Nintendo Land where some games are for touch, some for joycon, and some for IR.

There is 0% chance that the grip is not included in the base SKU. Not only is it the first way we see someone playing in the teaser, but it's required for a traditional home console experience, which the Switch is being marketed as, at least in better part.

They are not going to be so obtuse as to not include it, folks. No, not even Nintendo.

The gimmick will be multiplayer mini games.

2 player Excitebike
2 player Wave Race
2 Player Duck Hunt
2 player Strategy Versus like Fire Emblem or Advance Wars

Can be a collection of mini games that work right out of the box for local multiplayer with Joy Cons.

its not required for the traditional experience at all, the buttons are all on the joycons

I'm pretty sure a previous rumor said that the grip would be included in all SKU's but it was the pro controller that they were undecided if it should be sold separately.

She's easily one of the most trustworthy news sources in game journalism, so I don't doubt Laura's on the money here.

Which is great news! Puts it below the WiiU and close enough the the 3DS to be make sense as a hybrid, and will hopefully be competitive with the PS4 Slim and XO S as long as the bundles are good.

I'm still not buying one at launch though. Until I'm absolutely certain Nintendo have got their suit together with 3rd parties and genre diversification in the game output I'm not handing over any cash outside of fire sale prices.

I got the WiiU for just around £120 and I still felt ripped off due to its anaemic library.
yup, i'm never buying a Nintendo anything at launch, but I've kinda given up on 3rd parties really showing up on Nintendo hardware anymore. I mean, I'm expecting this to be a console that has the level of support as 3DS, still not a console to play the next GTA or Mass Effect on, but different enough to have both it and a PS4 or PC. And if stuff like Bravery Default and all of Nintendo's games is coming out on Switch I think it's library will grow fast enough.

Traditional experience means a single pad, not two separated joycons.

He's right, there's no chance the grip won't come in every single SKU.

traditional to me means full complement of buttons and sticks, Wiimote and nunchuk was a far more comfortable way to play a split traditional pad (which is what the joy cons are) gives the best of both worlds, now i'm coming around to the idea of the grip being included for charging practicality reasons

Even if you factor out the comfort of the Joycons, charging them is the big reason for needing to include the Grip.

Without a dedicated charging port, it looks like they can only be charged when attached to the system. Since the Joycons attach to the grip via the same sliding connectors, you can probably charge them by attaching a charging cable to the grip. They're not going to force people to undock the system when playing at home just to charge the Joycons when they run out of juice.

Unless of course they're real crazy and the Joycons use disposable AA/AAA batteries....

Yes but that's you

Majority of people are used to one controller and not split into 2. The grip being included will make it easier to advertise this as a traditional console at home when attached to the grip.

I'd expect a larger SD card, yeah.

If I had to guess:

$249

-Switch w/dock
-Small SD card

$299

-Switch w/dock
-Larger SD card
-Pro Controller
-Bundled game

I wonder if that's realistic for only an extra $50. Or if the pro controller will come with the $249 SKU.

There's no reason for them to go with bundled SD cards this time around. They only did it with the 3DS because (afaik) it used a raw NAND chip with a separate controller, meaning it would have been potentially very difficult for them to offer SKUs with different capacities (they may have needed to produce different mainboards for each model). For the Wii U, however, they've used eMMC, which is a standardised form of flash memory which includes controller on-package and can cheaply and easily be swapped out for a different capacity (even from a different manufacturer if necessary). Hence why Wii U offered two models from day 1 which included different amounts of internal memory.

This time around Nintendo will either be using eMMC or (hopefully) UFS. eMMC is currently available in capacities up to 128GB, UFS up to 256GB, and UFS is capable of higher speeds than eMMC. Cost for UFS memory was about $7.25 for 32GB when the Galaxy S7 launched (a year before Switch), so probably below $5 for Switch, and lower again if they stick with eMMC. My guess is that we're looking at eMMC, with 32GB in the cheaper model and 128GB in the larger one. The cost difference to them should only be about $10, so it would be justifiable given the pack-in game. Ideally I'd like to see them use UFS, with 64GB in the base model and 256GB in the more expensive version, but I can't see them giving both that much extra memory and a pack-in game for an extra $/€/£ 50.

used to maybe, though I can easily see separated joycons becoming the control method of choice for most people fairly quickly
