NES Classic Edition Thread: Now You're Playing With Power* *Sold Separately in Europe

I'm really happy with how the games look and play. The menu is fantastic though I wish there were a way to go to the home menu without hitting the reset button.

There is. I think I've seen Jose Otero from NVC do it on the Wii pro controller using the home button.

Got mine today. I have a weird issue I was wondering if anyone here could help with.

My receiver is Denon AVR-S920W. The NES Classic works on the back HDMI ports, but I get no video when plugging it into the front HDMI port. That leads me to believe the front port isn't playing nice with the signal, but I have no idea what could be doing this. Any tips?

I'm only asking because it's way easier to plug it into the front for quick play sessions.

Nintendo if you're reading this, here's how to advertise the NES Classic

I got mine today and set it up... Man, talk about nostalgia! I was totally marking out when I was inspecting the console and the controller. I love that the power button on the console is just like the original hardware where it clicks in halfway when it's on. I just wish the bay door opened, maybe had a fake game cartridge in there. It would've been a nice touch.

If I had just one complaint - besides some of the game choices and the super short controller cords - it's that I can't seem to get it to work being fed through my Xbox One's HDMI-IN port. Does that work for anyone else? I'm hoping maybe it's just a setting somewhere in my XB1's preferences to make it function.

A poster earlier mentioned hooking his Mini through both HDMI and an USB port on his Xbox One, so it is possible.

Would've been awesome if the 30 games were on a cartridge instead.

I was hoping the other thread(s) would be for buying talk, and this one would be for people who have it.

Anyway, I really love this thing, even though you can get more games on an emulator, the whole experience is pretty great. I've been playing Double Dragon II with my son and Bubble Bobble, and jumping between CastleVania, ninja Gaiden and Zelda. I'm actually trying to do the 2nd quest, something I've never done before and holy crap, it's hard.

I'm having problems with HDMI on it too. My receiver is obviously getting some kind of signal because the Denon logo that's on screen when it's not displaying anything disappears, but nothing ever happens. Tried multiple cables and all the ports. The receiver's never had a problem with set-top boxes, modern consoles, Macs, PCs, even a Raspberry Pi.

It works fine plugged directly into the TV, which is a pain.

Edit: Just looked on AVS and it seems we're not the only ones.

SNAP. Good to know! I'm super confused about what it could be, the symptoms are identical. Wonder if it's HDCP? The front port has "HDCP 2.2 / 4K". Is the 1080P source messing with it? So confusing. Hope we can figure out a solution!

Agreed. Although now, I'm eager to find a second controller. Any suggestions on the Wii classic controller front (best value/availability)?

I finally set the NES Classic up on my Samsung and I'm having good fun.

I've been somewhat obsessed with Super C but may start playing some of the single player only games. Namely, planning to spam save states as needed to work through GnG and Ninja Gaiden.

Got mine in today from my Best Buy order. Only issue I have is with my Visio sound bar.. menu music works fine but once a game is selected the audio cuts out every so many seconds. I have seen others with this issue.. just have to play the audio through the tv speakers.

I'm loving the NES Mini. So good that it plays in 60Hz. The original NES was 50Hz for us UK PAL owners.

Yep, that is definitely the biggest selling point for me, and it would be for any other "mini" consoles they'd release. NTSC folks don't know how good they have had it all these years, being able to play all classic games out of the box as they were intended.

(Though on the flipside the high quality of emulation used here is making me extra sad that we almost certainly won't be getting more NES games in their full glory through USB updates or DLC, like...Castlevania 3, Contra, Faxanadu, Ice Hockey etc. etc. The more games I could play legally at 60hz, the better!)

You could just get an NTSC NES or Famicom and play the games in 60Hz legitimately? Most PAL games had no adjustments and run exactly right in 60Hz. Heck or just grab an NTSC Wii and get many of the games on Virtual Console in 60Hz legitimately.

That said, if I were Nintendo I would do a volume 2 of the NES Mini before moving on to the SNES. It could be in top-loader form to avoid confusion between the two. If they worked out a way to do a cheap Zapper on modern TVs (maybe just Wii Remote style), even if it upped the price, the crowds would go even more nuts than this time IMO.

Believe me, I've often considered going down that rabbit hole, even with regards to getting a Japanese Wii for its phenomenal VC library (though Windjammers - a big draw for me - and perhaps other games have been removed again in the last years unfortunately) but I always got cold feet thinking about the power situation where Europe needs 220 Volt and the US and Japan I believe less. Without some kind of step-down converter you'd fry the console, I always thought.

You'd also need a CRT TV for the optimal old school effect, which I don't have space for, or a Framemeister-like device I think to get the image quality the mini NES provides on a modern TV. Also, the ship has really sailed on getting anything retro by Nintendo for affordable prices, which is why I'm so glad that this thing exists. A top loader mini NES 2 would also be great.

funny how they correct it on this but not on virtual console where you're paying a premium per game compared to this

Indeed, that should have been corrected years ago on the Wii when people started complaining.

Though going by the quite ignorant production manager mentioned a few pages ago, I get a strong feeling most things Nintendo does in this area is simply the easiest thing they can do, which in terms of VC is just to stick to each region's own releases because of copyright and localisation differences etc., while in terms of the mini NES it might have been to simply copy the US games for some reason. The lengths that their (rabid?) fans would go through for any sort of authentic and collectible product also seems to be underestimated again and again by the upper management. Again, IF this production manager was indeed not playing dumb with regards to why the mini NES is a hot seller when the Wii (U) VC offers a similar (but not as good for us here in Europe) experience.

This concern is completely irrelevant because all Nintendo consoles have external power supplies. You simply get a local power supply, plug it in and you're rolling. You can get a suitable local power supply for all retro consoles for under $10 nowadays too.

For Wii you don't even need a Japanese console, with homebrew most early Wii models (the first 40-50 million or so manuafactured) can be changed into a Japanese console with an app called 'AnyRegionChanger'. With full Japanese shop access.

You'd also need a CRT TV for the optimal old school effect, which I don't have space for, or a Framemeister-like device I think to get the image quality the mini NES provides on a modern TV. Wii Looks very good on modern screens since it can put out 480p, but yes a CRT or framemesiter is the best for older consoles. The Famicom/NES is also a special example since an RGB mod is very expensive for it.

And if going the Japanese route, Famicom and Super Famicom are still very affordable outside of some key titles. You can get all the Marios for $1 each cart only, for example. It really only gets nuts if going for genuinely rare stuff or complete in box. Unfortunately for me I collect complete in box ;)

Well it's now Wednesday; my bestbuy.com order is still in "Preparing" status, and the delivery date is still Friday the 18th.

Man I gotta get one of these NES and an old school CRT. Is there an HDMI converter to coax so I can make this truly old school?

The RF converter can be found online so all I need is that HDMI converter. :)

What is wrong with you.

The entire point of this is to NOT have to use CRT, but if you want go CRT so bad why on Earth are you looking to convert HDMI down to coax??? Composite man, composite. If you're gonna go CRT ditch the NES Classic and just get an NES and embrace retro gaming entirely!

Well at least they've started to offer 60Hz versions with Wii U, after we used Miiverse to make some noise about the issue, but it ain't perfect.

DKC and DKC3 are 60 while DKC2 is 50 for example.

And Balloon Fight, the game that started the campaign, got a modified 50Hz that plays in 60Hz ROM rather than just the native 60Hz version.

Funny anecdote I heard from a coworker this morning: His wife managed to snag a Wal-Mart order for the NES Classic yesterday during the prearranged time, but the order defaulted to in-store pickup. She assumed it would be canceled shortly, but instead she received an email 45 minutes later that the order was ready for pickup!

My coworker rushed over to the local Wal-Mart -- just in case -- and sure enough, they had an NES Classic waiting there for him. Too good to be true, but true nonetheless!

Isn't that EXACTLY how in-store pick up works? Why is this surprising?

My Target order shipped last Friday and is still in transit to a UPS facility. No scheduled delivery date either.

Meanwhile Target shipped my PS4 Pro using the same service on the 9th and it came the next day *shrugs*. Wonder if my box got "lost" lol

Mine just changed to backordered, with a new date of Dec. 7th. I am extremely pissed because I stopped trying to get one from other venues all this time. What a terrible company.

Mine shipped last Wednesday (from Arizona to Utah) and it's finally going to get here today. All I can say is FedEx Smartpost is a terrible service (they hand it off to USPS for final delivery and that handoff can take a long time - especially with a holiday weekend). So you're not alone.

Have they been putting these up daily too?
Along the unit, yeah.
But works exactly like Amazon:
-No Add to Cart button most of the time
-When it does appear, Add to Cart may either add nothing or let you know is no longer in stock, or tell you they don't ship to your state.

DeathoftheEndless

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!
I got my system and extra controller in the mail yesterday. I knew the controller cords would be short, but I still laughed when I saw them.

I played a game of Tecmo Bowl, which was pretty fun. I threw two interceptions before I figured out how passing worked and lost the game by giving up a running touchdown on the last play of the game. I might as well have been the real Bears team.

I suck at Dr. Mario. The difficulty ramps quickly and it gets stressful.

Just got a Famicom Mini. Controllers are so much better than the standard NES controller - it's small enough that they just melt into your hands.

Looks like shop bots are preventing us normal folk from buying online:

http://www.i4u.com/2016/11/117589/walmart-nes-classic-5pm-sale-under-tai-ding-scalper-bot-attack

Bots become a problem of Holiday shopping of hard to find items. Automated shopping scripts have been a problem since a while now in the sneaker scene. Now a new bot is targeting the Walmart online store. A bot script named Tai Ding is circulating that has automated shopping on Walmart's online store for any item.

A shopping bot script can complete a transaction in less than a second. It is basically as fast as the online shop is letting complete the purchase. Until a human shopper moves the mouse on the buy button, the bots already snagged up all inventory. A scalper under the pseudonym Mike Friend used the Tai Ding bot to buy multiple NES Classic consoles worth of about $500 yesterday. Mike Friend posted a screenshot of the order confirmations on Twitter.
