Buyer Beware: Buying a Sony 4K TV for you 4K gaming needs; Adds Incredible Lag

Buyer Beware for those that this matters too

If you are 9/10 where it doesnt, get the Best Buy $200 4K special then

----------------------------------------------------------
The entire line of their 2015 4K TV lineup and most of the 2016 lineup, adds incredible lag to 4K (only) gaming, and of course 4K+HDR gaming.

The have release a patch to bring down 4K HDR gaming (still over 50ms), 4K non HDR is still suffering.

Not only that Sony forum mods are actively deleting any discussion threads mentioning it on the boards

Are these numbers after the patch?

Did the patch affect all of the tvs listed?

Where is the flagship TV? Sony Z9D

And these lag numbers are the very reason I'm waiting to buy a 4K tv. Hopefully next year's models have better input lag.

I don't understand. I have the X850D, and in game mode ther eis no way the input lag is that high. If it is, then apparently I just don't give a shit about input lag, because it's never once bothered me

This info is old. Sony released a firmware update late last month to reduce input lag. They also release instructions on how to further reduce it as well.

My 850c is fine. Have you actually used any of the TVs or are you just basing this off of tech specs?

Incredible lag? Highest value there is just over 1/10th of a second.

Anything less than that is not noticeable for 99% of people.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
I'm waiting to see what next year brings us in terms of TV's on all fronts. That and it will knock down the prices on current models.

Exactly. People have been complaining about the input lag on the LG OLEDB6. I just bought one last week and have been gaming on it in 4K - some games in HDR. It's fine, and the image looks spectacular.

Huh? The average person would absolutely notice 60-100 ms. Why defend this?

Ok, they can notice it but they don't care.
I'm "tired" of "fixing" friends setups everytime they buy a new tv or console and play with all kind of "enhanced quality" filters crap from TVs and without Game mode.

The reaction is "ok it feels better, maybe?"

X800D seems more than fine. Just do a bit of research before you buy.

Also, why act like this is just a Sony thing? There are dozens of TV manufacturers out there. Buyer beware? Lol.

uh, thumper in 4k works fine on my 55" XD8005 so i dunno whats so "Incredible"

The numbers.

30ms to 50-60ms is incredible. If it matters to you or not is another thing

Oh I did????

Anyway I made the thread because Sony is actively suppressing the discussion on their forums. Is any other Manufacturer doing that? If so, you should make a thered

Huh. I was just looking at the linked thread in the OP on the Sony forums just last night since one of Sony's TV was on sale yesterday. Thanks to that thread my decision was swift. I stayed very far away from the model itself. I also saw last night apparently you made other threads that were getting closed and locked. That is wak.

This truly is not a good look for Sony. They are pushing their take on 4K HDR Gaming with the Pro yet their TV's are struggling with input lag. I take it the Consumer teams and Gaming teams did not have any internal discussions with each other whatsoever.

4K has been fine on my X830C.

Saying that if I'm outside of game mode the input lag at least doubles and the difference is huge, pretty much unplayable for me. Pretty certain even the average gamer could notice how 'behind' it is.

OP claims all Sony TVs and has the 800D in his first post that clearly has good input lag comparatively. Wtf?

Also why single out one brand? Almost all 4K HDR TVs are bad for this.

Why such an inconclusive list? There are quiet a few TVs that it's best not to buy if you're interested in gaming in 4K/HDR in their current state, it's probably simpler to create a list of TVs that are actually recommend to buy for this purpose.

Personally, I'd still recommend that people wait a year or two for things to settle down if they really want a decent HDR TV for gaming.

I just don't get why you single them out? You should have made a thread called 'BUYER BEWARE - LOOK AT A SPEC SHEET BEFORE BUYING A TV' and called it a day. And lo and behold, there's a thread specifically for that purpose on the front page right now.

I said why, They are deleting the discussion from their official channels, anybody else doing that?

Best bet for anyone: Wait 6-12 months before picking up a 4K/HDR set.

Agree!

Depends on the game. You can forget to do any competitive gaming with this amount of input lag (anything past 50ms), but of course it's fine if you're playing singleplayer RPG's. You'll still notice it though. Racing games, fighting games, FPS games? You'll be at a severe disadvantage. And it'll be very noticable if you're going to be using it as a PC monitor with a mouse.

You can tell yourself that it doesn't matter to you, but that's probably because you have nothing to compare it to.

I got around 20ms on my 2014 Sony 1080p TV and going to a TV with over twice the amount of lag would be instantly noticable, just like it was noticable when i switched from a ~40ms TV to my current 20ms Sony.

Sony and Samsung are two of the biggest actors right now when it comes to 4K TV's. Samsung is known to have great input lag in their current TV's, even with HDR+4K. Pushing people away from Sony and towards Samsung is good advice.

Huh, I've got a X900C and didn't notice any input lag. I've been enjoying a variety of games in 4K HDR and they look and feel great to me.

Guess everybody has a different tolerance for these things.

The number of people going to fall for Song deals in going to be crazy. This is one of the reasons I'm only looking for a particular Samsung and Vizio models on sale. Even then I feel like I should wait a year until the tech is ready.
Regardless, the Sony input lag surprised me at how bad it was compared to the other two.

Then you should change your title that paints a picture very clearly that ALL models are bad. Sounds like you have an agenda? You should have made a better thread that had all TVs. Although it appears that is already made here.

My TV is a few years old and a simple google doesnt bring much up, how would I check the input lag?

Is there a chance Sony releases a FW patch to reduce the lag even further?

dunno, I created a topic at the sony community support forum 2 months ago and it had nearly 1000 posts and no answer from sony. Just yesterday they shunk to a new low and deleted my topic and any similar topic created by other users. Shady company, I say don't buy their tv period regardless what how they are.

I was hesitant in pulling the trigger at the Amazon deal so I checked up a lot on the Sony X800D specs. I did not see the lag mentioned anywhere on the sony model but the nits comparison (for HDR) against the Samsung KS7000 (ks8000 us model) made me decide on shelling out a bit more and go for that one.

Glad I made the right choice.

Most people can't tell tbh. The set they are using right now probably has that much. Especially if for whatever reason they have one of those motion interpolation modes turned on.

My bro was playing sfv for the longest time without using game mode. Until one day I happened to be over and wanted to try his fight stick. I was like wtf and thought the stick was defective. Turns out it was just the amount of lag on his tv with game mode off. He's like platinum level in the game too. Lol

Look Im a Sony fan, but its more like Sony has the agenda not me or others. They are the ones suppressing the information on their official forums.

You should always research your TV before buying. I singled out Sony because of their actions, if another TV manufacture is doing that add it to the thread please

If you are happy with it, let it go.
What if you suddenly discover that your TV has 60ms of input lag?

Exactly. I think people forget this is a niche topic within an already niche community (gaming).

Edit: not to say I wouldn't want to talk about it since I myself am deciding between low input lag sets: 800d vs ks8000, depending on the tier of pricing I want to spend.
