Put It In Your MAU-th: Pork Loin leading PS4/Xbone in NA

This thread reminded me of what I heard while in the indie game Comedy night(still one of the best $1 I ever spent) Guy in a tiger suit was going on about how he was not getting a console this Black Friday, how he is waiting for the much powerful Scorpion, even though the girl in the room with us was begging him to get a One now to play with her.

I'm thinking Microsoft will be like Sony in the last gen. I reckon Xbox one will probably overtake Sony in sales by the end of the gen with Scorpio. Close call though.

I agree, it's pretty nuts that Xbox pulled the turn around that it did this gen. Great consumer support with the backwards compatibility, and putting out a much more powerful machine than ps4pro. That being said, I'm firmly with Sony this gen, even if they are getting absolutely spanked by Microsoft with sales and product offerings; there aren't much difference in titles offered. Not going to jump ship mid-gen.

Huh? PS3 never caught the Xbox 360 in the US last gen and the Xbox one will never catch the PS4 WW this gen. Not really getting your comparison here.

Pretty much laid low this BF though I did happen to be to be one of the winner's circle who bought some loins at Costco. Picked up CoD as a gift too for a kid who never had a chance to enjoy Modern Welfare though.

A factor that might not be important to some but to me it is, is how the console looks. The original ps4 looked like a premium product while the slim ps4 just doesnt look good to me.

The original xbox one looked bad, bulky yet the slim looks really good. Hell i just bought the gears red bundle because i liked the way it looks and i don't even like xbox games.

You can't seem to handle the truth can you ?

What truth is that? That many, yourself included, don't know how to stay on topic?

I was never talking about worldwide sales or claiming that MS has any sort of chance worldwide. The discussion was around past NPD threads and US based black Friday musings. The equivalent of what is going here would be me going into a Media Create thread and talking about MS winning NPDs.

Why is there such an insecurity fed need to remind everyone that the PS4 is winning worldwide when nobody is arguing otherwise and when it isn't related to the thread topic?

I think a huge part of it is the Xbox One S is a very attractive console and looks very good in an ad. PS4 slim and Pro look like more of the same. MS is bringing a lot of Apple to their hardware strategy. Every time I see a Xbox One S, i want one, and have to remind myself its functionally near similar to my launch Bone.

I agree that worldwide is beside the point. We should stick just to the US, where PS4 has a big lead, and will still have it at the end of the year. Let's say Microsoft wins this holiday by the same huge margin they won 2014--that's a bigger win than anyone expects, but go ahead and grant it. And then say they go on to win every NPD month going forward, by the same margin they've averaged during their last 4 winning months. It would still take them until next December to pass PS4 in the US.

i don't think this factors in at all to the average consumer. have you seen people's garbage setups? and no i'm not talking about the gaf gaming setup thread ;)

Eh I think with a month like this. Price is the deciding factor. I don't think they are desperate for anything since they are more than likely hitting their margins revenue wise, and with the price being $250 that does most of the leg work.

Not to mention if you bought on at Gamestop or Best Buy you could get TLOUR and Ratchet with the system.

The only bundle offering Mass appeal is the Minecraft bundle and I'll say the Gears Bundle will handily outsell that. If anyone wants a console this Holiday they are going to get one.

I'm not sure sure having many different bundles makes that much difference. Price imo remains king.

I got the Gears of War 1TB bundle. Its a Christmas gift for the kids. I would have gotten the Minecraft one but I wanted the bigger hard drive.

Kids wanted/want a PS4. They could care less about a Pro. I want the Pro, lol.

If not for the Pro I probably would have gotten a PS4. But this way they can play with their cousin thats across town. He has an XBO also.

Price vs price its a wash with XBO S vs PS4 Slim. But like I said earlier the XBO deals were just better to me. That extra controller for free sealed it. And the bigger hard drive. And knowing the features of the XBO S, it makes it a better choice to me vs the PS4 slim.

I think this would be a silly takeaway.

The Scorpio is aimed at a very specific audience. It isn't meant to move extraordinary volume. It's to tap into the market that is willing to pay a premium for top of the line tech (as top of the line as you'll get in a console).

The PS4 Pro is, believe it or not, aimed at a similar audience. I still don't understand why people thought this would be a hit outside of people who already own PS4s. It's an upgrade for people who just have to have the best thing. There was not some army of people who skipped out on the PS4, skipped out on the PS4 slim, but were suddenly sold on a $400 machine.

If Sony and MS both have realistic expectations for who would buy these upgrades, I don't think there will be alarm or disappointment.

So you're telling me that in a holiday season where Sony released not one, not two, but three new product skus (Slim, Pro and PSVR) it should be within the realm of expectation that they should lose the HW NPDs in every single month?

(The fact that the Pro's audience is people who already have PS4s is precisely the point. These sales should be in addition to, rather than substitutes for, your normal holiday demand for consoles.)

Nobody is saying that the Pro should be outselling the Xbox by itself. But it, plus never-lower prices on the Slim, plus interest around PSVR, should be able to give them the marginal increase in sales sufficient to beat the Xbox.

And if the answer is really "no silly, you shouldn't expect the Pro to sell more than 50k units in its debut November" then the Pro REALLY has problems. If Sony isn't going to move more than 1m of these worldwide annually, what incentive will there be for developers to invest resources into investing in the platform? You'll see only the laziest implementations, and then it won't even be serving the niche enthusiast community well.

I definitely think people underestimate the effect of the aesthetic appeal of the XB1S.

It not only looks great, but it looks new in a way the PS4 Slim and Pro don't.

Really?

I think people over estimate its impact.

When people chat about consoles, no one talks about its looks. It's games/powa/services /etc. Basically everything else.

yep...its definitely not in the category of something you carry around with you in public like a phone, laptop, purse, shoes, etc. so the aesthetics are secondary.

$50 is plenty to sway people towards one console over another if your sole purchase criteria is price. Three years in how many 'brand fans' are left? Lots of people that are just now deciding to buy will not really care which console they get as long as it plays madden and CoD, and is good value. The Xbox one S has some fantastic bundles at the moment with MS basically giving away their first party content. As a consumer you see a good headline price and a bunch of free games meaning you don't need to spend any more for quite some time.

For that particular market, I doubt 4K bluray makes any difference at all. I would also be interested to see the attach rate - with MS bundling so any good games, will we see a big drop in attach rate from new customers

S looks cooler in images but in real life ps4 slim looked much better for my tastes. One S looked like a box (well yeah I know :p).

Both are broke now, and he wants a Vita. I told him about the Switch. Its back to square one now with him not really caring about the Switch, he wants a Vita.

I want the Switch first. lol. The Vita can wait.

Clearly, Black Friday sales data was rigged by the stores to put an american system at no.1.

I mean a dude had a girl begging to play games with him. Seems a massive miscalculation to pass that up in favor of waiting for Scorpio.

well, he could be an utterly devastating playboy and another girl would mean nothing to him.... he could wait for the scorpio.

My Best Buy on Friday had literally mountains of ps4 slims, pros, and various x1s bundles. Didn't see many ppl buying any or around the consoles in general. Most ppl were just checking out games and other sections of the store. Kinda weird. I thought they would be swarming the consoles.

I would post pics but I don't know how to using iPhone. Haven't been on here long.

Always been curious about this but is neogaf more of a NA forum? Because I often see discussions that only refers to the NA market. Like "This year Microsoft won the holiday season" when they actually sold less World Wide. Why is not the title instead "This year Microsoft won the holiday season in NA"? (as an example from previous years..)

Without digging too much Into the sales sometimes I am under the impression that xbox one are closing in on ps4 big time, when its not really happening taking global sales Into consuderation. Reading gaf can be missleading.

I'll say this: If Xbox takes November it's a disaster for the Pro, and will be a huge red flag for MS's Scorpio and "no more console generations" strategy.
The Huge red flag should be if Scorpio is to expensive. If it's anything more than 399 than it's in trouble anyway.

PS4 to Pro is a smallish upgrade
Xbox One to Scorpio is a pretty damn big upgrade

Microsoft's strategy would be more costly, while providing somewhat similar visual improvements to the casual eye. Then they've also given up a year of sales to the Pro as well when they could have gone a cheaper upgrade NOW and still achieved a similar outcome.
The thing that will live or die for Scorpio is the price.

Really?

I think people over estimate its impact.

Agreed, The Xbox One S is a beautiful looking console but I don't think the look of it is what determines how well it does.

Why? Sony have made many missteps with the pro that we already know they won't repeat with Scorpio.

And Sony also got cockblocked by the Scorpio announcement, not even the original xbone reveal had the presenters feeling so ashamed of the console. Cerny talking about the console sounded like an apology in advance. Ms is oozing with confidence when they present S and Scorpio. Well to be fair they were so confident in xbone to the point of arrogance, but anyway, the pro reveal was among one of the saddest gaming presentations I've seen.

Not really - it's very interesting how Scorpio will turn out - both use same AMD technology so they will have similar performance per Watt and per mm^2 of silicon. Unless 10nm process becomes available before end of year - we are looking at 200+ Watts apu that is roughtly 50% bigger than was PS4 Pro has inside. And the big question - will it have Jaguar or Zen?

Meanwhile PS5 will probably release in end of 2019 - by that time we should have new node and AMD zen apus with hbm on the market - so they will be easily able to put 9-10TFlops into 400$ box.

I could imagine the Pro sold the bulk of its numbers on launch.

Never has a post needed "In my opinion" more than this one.

Nobody gets cockblocked by a console that is a year away. If that was the case, everyone in the world would've waited for PS3. Not to mention the price point for PS4 will be much lower than what Scorpio costs when it comes out.

I always thought that the Pro model would be a nice bonus but not a big deal. I will continue to think the same about Scorpio. Especially because it plays the same games and the specs will put the price in the higher end. Unless they sell it at a loss, but I guess at some point they would also like to make some money with the gaming division.

One thing to remember is that PS4 has outsold XB1 almost 2 to 1, so PS4 sales are going to slow as many more people already have one.

XBox has also done some fierce discounting through the last year to catch up. They tend to do better during the holidays because MS has great bundles that coincide with a lot of 1st party and FPS releases. Sony spreads their exclusives out through the year and that has worked for them, too.

Curious to know if you have any issues with the tone of this thread? With all the MS cheerleading and chest thumping before we even have actual data.
Is being happy for new owners of xbox something that bothers you?

Why does positive news or a positive outlook for MS often bother people so much? There's always a 'you shouldnt be so happy for your xbox brand because...' comment and its sad.

Not in the US where we're focusing on.

Can I have the current US numbers?

I have two friends that bought a PS4 and their roomates (different houses) bought an XB1. No point in having two of the same console in the same house, I guess.

No actual advertised deals but there was a deal last Sunday pre-BF relating to target coupons to get the price down to 360+tax or lower. Amazon PMed the $360 price.

For Cyber Monday Bestbuy is bundling COD Legacy Edition. Target is offering more coupons which makes the pro between $320-340+tax. Amazon is Pming the $340. So basically they are all selling the Pro for around $340.

No offence but your posts are coming off like you're buying those consoles for yourself and your kids are just secondary. Not exactly the sort of mindset you should have when buying gifts IMO.

The gap is around 1.3mil or so in the US. Someone will be able to give you exacts though.

I can't imagine people flocking over coupons personally, but I think in relation to this thread, it's why we don't see the Pro at the top spots. I think the November NPD will be interesting. I would always imagine new hardware to win it by quite a substantial difference.
