Daisy Ridley Thought Rey’s Parentage Was Revealed in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

One of the big questions we had going into Star Wars: The Force Awakens was who, exactly, Rey could be related to… and one of the big questions we had coming out of Star Wars: The Force Awakens was still who, exactly, Rey could be related to. Although the character makes reference to a family that left her behind on Jakku, she doesn’t say who her parents are, and the film doesn’t spend much time dwelling on that aspect of her past.

Naturally, in the absence of confirmed info, tons of theories have sprung up. Fans have wondered if Rey could secretly be a Skywalker, a Kenobi, a Solo, a Palpatine, an Erso, or some combination of the above. But Rey herself, Daisy Ridley, apparently thought the answer was hiding in plain sight. The actress said she thought “a lot was answered in The Force Awakens,” and that it wasn’t until later that she realized fans were still in the dark about Rey’s heritage.

Ridley has promised in the past that Episode VIII would finally, at long last, reveal the truth about Rey’s parents. However, she admitted in a recent interview with Time Out London, she originally assumed the answer had been revealed in The Force Awakens.

I thought a lot was answered in ‘The Force Awakens’. Then after the screening I went for a drink with my agent and everyone, and we were chatting away and I realized that oh, in their minds it’s not answered at all!

Now that she knows we don’t know, however, she is determined to keep her lips sealed. At least until Episode VIII comes out next year.

I think curiosity is a wonderful thing. And I do find it quite funny that people keep asking about it. Just yesterday a guy asked to take a picture with me and went, “Is Luke your dad?” And I was like, “Chill out, you’ll see!”

Okay, let’s think this through. The fact that Ridley figured fans would figure out Rey’s parentage in The Force Awakens seems to suggest she’s related to a character we saw, or at least heard about, in that movie. That points to some of the more obvious suspects, like Leia, Luke, or Han. It seems unlikely she’s the child of Leia, given that Leia greets Rey like a stranger in the movie. That suggests she’s probably not Han Solo’s daughter, either, unless we’re to believe he had a kid he didn’t know about with another woman. Luke seems like the best possibility of the three, especially given that the film ends with the two of them together. But when and how would that have happened?

I still think she's Han/Leia daughter. It's the only way this story has some weight. Fighting your evil cousin doesn't have as much weight as fighting your evil, irredeemable brother.

I still hold fast to the idea that she can't possibly be Luke's daughter because of Maz's speech to her in the catacombs. Basically saying, "your parents left you but Luke won't" which wouldn't make sense at all if Luke was also her parent.

I honestly find the whole mystery around her parentage to be completely uninteresting. But then I kind of found her character to be uninteresting, so I guess it's natural.

I bet her father is Smegol or whatever his name is. Or its related to him in some way, or related to the old emperor.

Im sure luke had a vision about kylo going evil but he foolishly tried to change the will of the force and sent away his sister as a precaution
Why does Leia not recognize her? Idk bad directing?

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
Or more likely she is actually an orphan, whose parents are of no consequence.

I would love that but it's looking doubtful. It would be nice if the two main heroes of this story are fresh and have no direct connection to the past. It's a big universe afterall. You already got a huge connection with Kylo. If everyone is the kid of somebody from the OT, it starts getting silly...yes, silly even for Star Wars.

I'm not really into the mystery of her parents. For whatever reason, it doesn't get me excited. Same for Snoke.

It would make sense that she is 10 or so years younger and after Kylo Ren went crazy and on a kill spree, he took her to hide her to protect her like Obi Wan did with him, and lied to Leila and Han and told them she died in an accident or something so they don't find her.

Seriously, all the people ITT who said Luke, answer this please:

She can't be an orphan

This confirms that her parents are relevant to the story. Daisys belief that it was clear who it was in Awakens reinforces that fact.

It's probably Luke. no reason why it wouldn't be.

Easy: It's in the perennial sense that Luke isn't her father because he didn't raise her, but Luke the Jedi won't leave her because she is displaying such power.

I cannot cosign this enough. I don't think I've cared less about a protagonist and any possible mysteries that are tied to them.

I think there are indications that Rey might be Luke's daughter but i feel those are red herrings.

It feels to me more likely her parents aren't important. They left her, The Force and Luke won't.

It's pretty crazy how much discussion there is around Rey's parents considering there are only two possible choices: Luke/Mystery woman or Han/Leia

What's even crazier is that there isn't another woman to pair with Luke.

Or Obi-Wan's granddaughter ;)

If Rey's parentage is a mystery in TFA, and the answer is "Luke", then proper storytelling would have made Luke an actual character in that movie (rather than a Macguffin to drive the plot).

"No, I am your father" in ESB wouldn't have meant jack shit if Vader wasn't a main character in the previous film.
