Hit Japanese animation “Your Name” is headed to top of the China box office. It looks set to depose “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” after just one weekend.

“Your Name” scored a sensational $10.9 million in its Friday opening session from a wide release pattern of 66,000 screenings that attracted 2.77 million spectators.

That dropped “Fantastic Beasts” to a cooler $3.31 million in second place on 28,000 screenings. Its cumulative after 8 days is $60.4 million.

According to Maoyan.com, a popular Chinese film ticket website, box-office sales topped 70 million yuan (about $10 million) at around 8:30 p.m. on its first day.

China limits the number of foreign movies theaters can show each year and keeps tight control over which get distributed.

Permission to screen Shinkai’s blockbuster, first released in Japan in late August, came extremely quickly, industry sources said.

I highly encourage everyone to watch this movie if you get the chance, it's a really good movie and deserves all the success it is getting.

Anime bringing the world together.

it is a good film, a good animation film and a breath of fresh air compared to your usual disney animation thingy

My fantasy is that my girlfriend was actually a young high school girl.
Best movie I have seen in a theatre and in general in a long long time.

Please see it if you can. I have followed this director since he started. His previous films were good, but were lacking that extra something and were over dramatised, Your Name has that extra something and the over-dramatisation is on point. I've witnessed a director truly blossom.

wasnt this a hit in the UK as well?

Sleeper hit?

I dont know the background of the studio.

I watched it at the Odeon in Blackpool and did not expect the place to be as busy as it was, particularly as it was subtitled. The film itself was great. Just a shame the facilities were a bit naff.

I live in Bumblefuck, Nowhere, so it'll be a while before I can watch this. Will catch up on director's previous work in the meantime. I hear 5CMPS is really good.

I saw this last Saturday and was pleasantly surprised. Shinkai's films tend to be pretty but light on plot but this one actually has a rather meaty plot complete with one or two twists.

What do people who dont like anime think of this film?
I'm curious if there is a change of opinion regarding this film like spirited away and princess mononoke.

I wish american animated movies looked half as neat as stuff like this. Pixar ruined everything with its hideous ugly lifeless sterile art style.

That's great to hear because I wholeheartedly agree. His early efforts were always stunning, but ultimately forgettable. Looking forward to this now!

Glad that the first four deserve to be there, at least.

Now what's the next step in your master plan?
Would be nice to get an anime movie that made a bit of a splash in the USA. I know the DBZ Rebirth of Freeza movie did well but that was a limited short time release that seemed to cater to fans mostly though there are still a ton of DBZ fans

I have seen it when it was screened in Scotland.
It's a cute animation movie flick.

Though I'm still not sure what makes the movie so successful.

Remember the old days when people were convinced nothing from Japan would ever succeed in China?

Thats because those people are usually the ones that dont have any contact with Chinese besides reading some stories about stupid old people destroying japanese stuff...

Anime is huge in China. I would argue that One Piece is far bigger in China than everywhere else.

Watched it in the UK and the screening was probably 95% Japanese people, it was a really great experience and brought me back to being in Japan earlier this year :) Fantastic movie, definitely one where you wanna go in without knowing anything!

I don't... because I don't think that has ever been true.
They may spout hate towards there neighbours, but in reality they are, and have always been (also illegally) consuming Japanese products, be it Anime or cars.

Saw it here in China yesterday! Pretty full showing. Seems like people liked it. Especially near the end everyone was hooked!

But there is something that bugged me.

I checked online reviews for film, and one comment litterally said (in Chinese):
I will not watch this movie and give the Japanese money, so they can buy bullets, which might cost me or future generations.

I was like: The fuck. I wanted to post this on Twitter first, but was afraid It would go out of hand. But it's bugging me so much.

that guy was never going to watch the movie in the first place, he just wanted to get on his high horse to talk shit about the japanese, chinese nationalists are crazy, same as japanese nationalists and nationalists in general, when the only thing you've got going for you is pride in your country? you've probably got a sad fuckin life

surprised to hear this considering their relations nowadays

That matters very little to the general populace and a lot of the growing middle class still see Japanese goods as high-end products. Otherwise Japan wouldn't be brimming with Chinese tourists practically every day of the year.

I finally got to see the movie on my flight back from PSX. Needless to say it blew me away and might just place in my top 10-20 favorite movies ever. I need to watch it once more sometime in the near future.

Easily one of the most unique and well told love stories I have ever seen.

I see being a filthy weeb transcendes national boundaries.

hey all of east asia can hate each others guts but that doesn't mean they can't enjoy each others fine products

see: cheap chinese goods in korea and japan, anime in south korea and china and the south korean media machine in china and japan

Did this movie ever get a release in the West by the way? I hear it's really, really good and I don't want to resort to low quality internet streams.

Interesting that its crushing Moana in China, wonder if that has any effect on future greenlighting especially as China overtakes the USA as the biggest movie box office market.

I know a lot of people touted that Moana was great for NOT having a love interest and stuff but I've noticed in a lot of asian markets, that is considered a pretty important part of a "good movie". Although Zootopia didn't and i think it did really well worldwide?

yeah, though screenings might have pass through depending on where you live

in sydney (where i'm based), it went from a one day only thing to a four day only thing to a two week thing because of how much they underestimated demand

wait i didn't know they didn't want to release it? why not? i can watch it in kangarooland and people in new zealand can watch it too lol

They're going to release it in the US sometime next year, apparently. I don't know why they're dragging their feet so much. It premiered in July at Anime Expo, and there's a very limited LA run going on right now to qualify it for the Oscars, but we won't be seeing a general release for a while :/

I can't wait for this to get a decent dub. Any idea if it will and when? I'll settle to stream it in Japanese with subs if theres an option but whn I go to buy the Bluray I'd rather there be an English track. I hate reading in a film so visually dense and wonderful as a Makoto Shinkai film.

Funimation dubbed (is dubbing?) it. There's already a dub for UK I think? Dunno if it's the same dub or not.
