yep this sure is real good scoops, really laying it all on the line there, no possible way to weasel out of this if it's wrong because it's just a random guess

""""""" i don't like ruining the surprises of what they're going to announce """"

yeah maybe because you don't know any????
Hasn't NateDrake had plenty of inside info before? Also, what's with the excessive punctuation?

Nate's a standup dude.
He isn't one to blurt out shit every week.
He's more believable to me than many of the others.

Phone reception is more important to me than human rights
5 hours is doable and acceptable. 8 would be amazing.

If it does that it might have a huge battery inside.

Yeah I trust Nate. Doesn't he have Nintendo press passes and invites to their events and stuff? And I think he's in touch with Emily and Laura and all those other people. He's always handled his Switch knowledge and things like that pretty respectably.

So the switch, as thin as it is, and as small as it is, is going to run Dark Souls 3 for 8 hours at respectable graphics?

I will like to see this black magic.

Would Nate really just make this stuff up for shits and giggles? Why are people calling him out? Thought he was pretty reputable around here.

Hasn't he provided some reliable information over the last year? I am not fully sure who to trust outside Emily Rogers and Laura Dale for Switch leaks.

Awesome news if true

If they're final dev kits, does that mean other things were improved as well? Such as storage or RAM?

You can run anything on almost anything with enough reduced quality... look at Xenoblade 3DS

That seems unlikely given that the Wii U Gamepad churns through its battery in 4 hours and it's just accepting a video signal. Maybe the devkit comes with a big chunky battery or something, but I'd be surprised if that number holds up for the final product.

Don't know if I buy it. If you're playing Skyrim on that device, I don't see how it wouldn't kill a battery in 3.5 hours.

What 3DS is 5-8 hours? I am lucky to get three with my New 3DS XL.
You can turn off the Wi Fi with 3 lightness and other stuff.

3DS can last up to five hours definetly, but the Gamepad has truly a very poor battery i was worried Switch would be the same :/

Just 5 hours is already pretty good. I'm getting about 7 hours playing only Smash 3DS without Wifi and 3D, and brightness set to medium on my 3DS XL.

Wii U gamepad has:

1. Small Battery. Puny. It is only 1500mAh.
2. The video signal is a constant 5Ghz Wi-Fi transmission. Plus the Bluetooth for the controller.

Watch Netflix on your cellphone and tell me how long the battery lasts. And mind you, it has a bigger battery.

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Isn't this really late for the dev kits to be going out?
The system is coming out around march isn't it?

It says final dev kit, which means there exist older dev kits, that the devs are working on all along. Think of the retail Switch as version 1.0, this kit being version 0.9 and previous kits are 0.8, 0.7 etc

My expectations are set at an average of 5 hours, which is fine. Unless you're playing the least taxing games/apps with lowest brightness settings then I doubt you'd get even close to 8.

It's still nice to set goals though. Good on Nintendo for not being satisfied with 3 hours.

I bet that's total life and not active life since tablets with big batteries can't hit that number with screen on alone (not counting gaming). I expect 3 hours gaming at most.

seems reasonable, its bigger than the new 3ds xl so they could fit a bigger battery, besides these numbers are probably with the lowest brightness no wifi and head phones, as stated above even the new3dsxl could achive similar number at those settings and the low end of the 3ds had to acount for 3d.

He says the Switch will have a battery range "close to the 3DS," and then says "meaning 5 to 8 hours" after a pause. Sounds like he was reading this straight from his source, because he reacts to the news itself right afterwards, specifically mentioning the 5-8 hour range again.

He also says this is obviously dependant on stuff like screen brightness and wi-fi settings and all that.

So this all sounds 100% feasible to me, which is great for Nintendo.

Harsh and....undeserved?

The dock rumor would lend more credence to this, I'd think.
Instead of having to make a machine that's supposed to run at medium spec all the time resulting in ugly TV visuals and poor battery life there could be the low setting for the portable mode and the high setting for the docked mode without worrying about battery life

To keep expectations in check, based on this information it's safe to say that, as most reasonable people expected, they are indeed using a FinFET process (likely 16nmFF), but only to reduce power consumption rather than to increase performance beyond the Tegra X1. Basically, we're getting a portable Shield TV with an extra gig of RAM and no Android overhead. Possibly the 128-bit RAM bus but that's up in the air. It's still more accurate to call it the weakest current-gen system than a super beefy Wii U, but in terms of power it falls about where you'd expect a PSP 3 would if it launched this year.

With that said, the fact that it uses USB-C does seem to indicate that it needs higher wattage than your typical handheld or even phone since I imagine that that Nintendo would save a few cents and use microUSB if they didn't need the extra wattage. It probably uses over 10W. If it really does boost up in the dock. it's probably something like 15W max for the whole unit while docked.

listen to the mad man
out of all the dumb and insanely vague rumors of the Switch, this is the hill you want to die on?

The whole point is that this is stupid-ass Nostradamus stuff. It's vague insider teasing that literally can't be disproven. If the battery is lower or higher it'll just be "well, I guess they <managed to make things more efficient> / <didn't quite hit their battery target>". It's the very worst kind of insider teasing, and it's combined with the absolute stupidest thing: "I know more but I'm not going to say because I want you guys to enjoy the surprise!" It's the same archetype every time.

Sometimes it's because the person is a fake insider just making inferences based on publicly available info and basic rational speculation about what a good decision would be. Other times it's because they have some connection to developers (although possibly random indie developers on the periphery who themselves are not in a position to know) but they just pass along every nugget of info they hear with no discretion as to sourcing or hearsay. Does it really matter which they are? Regardless, it's annoying as hell.

These figures do it repeatedly, over and over again, week in and week out, for years and eventually people just start thinking "yeah, they sound credible, after all they're saying what other sources have saying, and I think they were definitely kinda right about something once".

Exclusive Scoop: I Am An Insider and I know the Nintendo has some exciting News for the January meeting... I won't spoil it but... it will be... legend....ary...!!!!

If it's true, let's wait for the other specs because 5-8 hours, powerful and less than 300€ don't mesh together IMHO.

If it makes you feel better Nake has also said that the switch will be using a pascal based gpu and has repeatedly stood by that claim. Cant really wiggle outta that one.

I think you have Nate pegged completely wrong though
