Namco censors Tales of Berseria despite insisting they won't

Time to vote with my wallet. I don't support censorship.

I was looking forward to the game, I guess I'll import it when it's cheap enough.

What? No it isn't. One would do way more damage and have a greater chance of killing you outright. It would completely chance your expectations of the event.

Its Like killing you with a gun to instead killing you with a rifle. You still dead.

What do you think will happen if they go and attempt to add back in content that was going to change the age rating initially?

Nothing. DLC is rated separately to the main game in cases like this. They can uncensor the game in optional DLC and still keep their Teen/Pegi 16 rating.

Just saw this, I do prefer the original scene but if that's the only change and it was done to keep the rating down then I don't really mind.

Yeah.

I'm glad they at least said something and didn't stay silent and are coming out and telling us that this is only thing they changed. (Obviously people will now check them on this when the game comes out though)

The game looks great.

lol ok so not a great comparison.

Lets just say the change in the scene is completely negligible. The result is pretty damn clear in both scenes....You're not going to be confused as to what the result was by any means. Changing the story is a huge stretch for what happened here haha.

The number of people stating they aren't going to buy the game over this ridiculous change to a single scene is absurd. If that is what you are going to base the entire experience of this game on then you must be a a very difficult person to please. It's not a big deal.

People in this thread have already explained how this scene is connected to other elements of the game.

Without stating spoilers here I can't be specific. But how in the world does that work? The end result of the scene is exactly the same. Did you watch the change? How does it alter the story?

People are over reacting.

My guess is that change was for a T rating. Which seems dumb because these kind of niche JRPGs aren't exactly mass-market fodder.

According to RPG Site, Bamco is considering an uncensor patch for the Steam version. If they do it then I guess I'll get it on PC instead.

Well, fuck the PS4 version then. Good thing I have a gaming PC that can handle this. I'll get it there if the uncensor patch comes to fruition.

Same. Make it happen NB. Nothing to lose since games on Steam don't have to be rated.
See, this is what I don't quite understand. The game is currently rated T for consoles and PC.

It's pre order page is already sitting on steam showing a ESRB T rating. According to Namco, that rating might not be true if they add the uncensor patch which I could see not being a problem if the Steam version didn't have a ESRB rating in the first place.

Are we saying there's a way to take back a rating once it's given or ignore the current rating posted for a platform?
Or are we simply saying Namco doesn't mind if the Steam version has to change it's rating?

I think legally speaking, they themselves are not offering a patch. Its more of a mod, a private thing released by someone in the dev team. Since the PC is an open platform, such a grey area can exist.

It's really quite a strange decision on part of whatever rating agency is responsible.

What is true is that they wouldn't need a rating for the PC version in the first place, given that they are not going to sell a physical version of it as far as I know.

There were people claiming they were boycotting Star Ocean 5 after a female character got given bigger underwear in the western release, this is no surprise

I'm impressed that they released a statement. And even more that they consider releasing a PC patch.
If it's really as simple as ppl say, then they should definitely do it.

I stand in shocked awe at the comprehensive understanding of nuance contained within these posts, and await more in the same vein.

I always return to the quote from a Star Ocean 5 producer about the outcry over the underwear. I think it's true in 99% of situations where people freak out over "censorship" when it's really absolutely nothing but a minor localization edit that in no way changes the game.

It’s fundamentally just a ratings issue. But as for Star Ocean, it’s not that different–it’s unfortunate that a lot of people took the change in a bigger way than intended and interpreted things in a way that haven’t actually happened. But the game hasn’t changed, and the size [of the character’s underwear] hasn’t really changed, it’s really not that different than what was originally created. The essence of the game is not that part, and I really want players to not focus on that, but the rest of the gameplay.

It kind of makes me sick how much people over react to every little thing, People boycotting games are actively hurt the developers and the chance of future game releases in the West doing this and they do it over things the developers themselves are fine with and many times actually help create all under the banner of "it changes the intent of the developers".

There's no need for responses like this, that particular change in no way affected the game, it's completely reasonable to say people were overreacting

This would have fixed Velvet's outfit enough for me (at the same time, I wouldn't want it as as censure) in the original version of the game. It's sort of what happens with Vaan from FFXII, his design is easily fixed and looks much better with a shirt on, Velvet's design would look much better with a complete red top (it really improves it for me, at least).

As someone who fights for and is completely okay with people hating on shitty outfits and wanting to see less of them, underboob is my kryptonite so I have no choice but to keep her in this outfit all game and pick my battles somewhere else.

Was looking at the Steam Tales of Symphonia page to see if anymore fixes were made official or fan made, and now I see Kaldaien is pissed off about people mad about this and won't get Tales of Berseria on PC. Instead he will get it for PS4 :S

You better release your shit good Bamco.

Edit: He also apparently made his profile private so all of the guides for modding the games are gone.

I guess people kept bothering him to promise to restore it.

Even though it's censored I actually thought the censored version was still well done. Sure the original was as brutal, but at least they didn't just cut away. They actually put more work into it to make it look good.

Reading his post history he's fine with the new version of the scene and pointed out that no tools exist that would allow one to swap scenes in Tales games. He stated that before reversing "censorship" even enters his radar his worries would be to fix stuff that doesn't work as intended, then improving performance. Cue fake outrage about him allowing censorship and prioritizing less important stuff, at which point he cancelled his Berseria Steam pre-order and stated he prefers to just play the game (on PS4) instead being confronted by the entitlements of the PC community, then made his profile private. (All my wording.) I say it's fully up to him how to spend his spare time and also think an ungrateful community don't deserve his (or anyone else') time.

Well, I hope Bamco learned from the past two ports and Berseria PC is a solid port right out of the gate. I guess everyone will be able to check that with the demo for that matter.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
People cancelling over something so trivial, even after Bamco releases an official statement directly addressing the issue? Come on.

Please tell me some of you guys are cancelling the collector's edition. Still trying to nab that
lol

The STEAM forums are VERY vitriolic in nature and people there feel entitled to the hard work modders put into fixing certain games. I really wish he didn't listen to fools online, but I understand him wanting to drop everything because of those ungrateful brats on there. I've posted fixes for DBCS, SFV, Naruto, etc. and I get messages from people that basically demand that I find another solution for them when that doesn't work. Needless to say I've gotten more thank yous than complaints. I just ignore the negative and or entitled whining.

Yeah this looks much better. I would be down with full pants as well.

To me, it is not a matter of being overly-sexualized--although I think that is a valid point--I just think the design looks like ass.

Finally saw the picture in question. I expected wayyyyyyy worse. Like blood everywhere type of thing. Instead it's stylized. That limbo gif is pretty similar.

My theory? Most people don't, just the ones with the "energy" to post about their grievances here.

Given how common the usual 'I don't support censorship/digital only release/dub only/sub only, therefore I won't buy this niche game' cycle is, I am inclined to agree with you
