NeoGAF Votes: Most Anticipated Games of 2017

1. Mass Effect: Andromeda: It is suprising that Andromeda ended up being my top pick. I did enjoy ME3 somewhat, but it wasn't nearly as good as 1 or 2 and the ending left a real bad taste. But time has passed and the fact that the game is set on different galaxy means a clean state.
2. Red Dead Redemption 2: There are two things preventing RDR2 being my top 1 pick. First is my exhaustion of open world games. Second is the fact that it (probably) is directly related to RDR. I hoped for totally seperate sequel in the series. Still RDR was one of my favorite games last gen so RDR2 deserves spot 2.
3. Persona 5: Sorry Persona 5, you should have released this year. Too many years of hype already.
I still love you
4. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony: I really liked D1 and D2 was ok. We will probably be getting more of the same, but at least it is still different from other games.
5. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy: New stuff from my favorite studio. U4 really sparked my interest in Uncharted series again, so it is good to get more and it is great to see Chloe again.
6. Horizon: Zero Dawn: So much potential, but open world games don't interest me that much anymore. I hope they will nail it.
7. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix: I loved KH1 back in the day, but for some reason didn't play any of the other games. Been waiting for the PS4 reveal for ages.
8. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: Haven't had Nintendo console for ages, but might get Switch. Guess it is time to play Zelda too again.
9. Pyre: Haven't seen much of it, but it doesn't seem as interesting as Bastion or Transistor. Yet it is by Supergiant Games, so I think it will be good.
10. What Remains of Edith Finch: The trailer looked cool

1. Persona 5:
Man, those countdown streams were fun, weren't they? November 2013, when that elderly woman showed up to troll the viewers, followed by the surreal unveiling of Persona 4 "Unbelivable! Could you imagine the step? He's genius!" Dancing All Night, along with Teddie's endless rambling seemingly drawing things to a close... before that 55:555 timer popped up and revealed Persona 5 at the end. Or that February 2015 stream where everyone was blown away by the first footage of the game, which made sure to flaunt all the style it possibly could. The lengthy wait and ample delays have definitely worn on me, but the sixth entry in my favorite series is nearly at hand. Hopefully.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild:
I've been entranced by this game ever since that big showing at E3. What really gets me the most is just how every situation can be tackled in a myriad of ways. Seems as if the only limit is the player's imagination. The game's world looks very nice as well. It looks like it'll be enjoyable to get lost in.

3. Sonic Mania:
It looks to be taking all the right cues from the classic Sonic games, and the soundtrack is absolutely on point. Sonic 2 was the first game I ever played, so if Sonic Mania ends up radical, that'd be radical.

4. Gravity Rush 2:
I'm buying a PS4 for this game. Well, there are many other games on PS4 I'd like to play as well, but I've gotta be there for the sequel to my favorite Vita game. Seeing how stunning the game looks visually causes me to nod my head in approval. If the combat is improved, and if the story/premise is more intimately explored, Kat will be golden 👌

5. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd:
Kevin Graham.

6. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony:
While I'm not as thrilled about this series as I was 2 years ago, I'm still fairly excited to go on another of Kodaka's wild, despair-infused rides. It's my hope that by dropping the baggage from Danganronpa 1-3, V3 can provide some fresh experiences within its murder mysteries, courtroom shenanigans and overall plot.

7. Hatsune Miku: Project Diva Future Tone:
These games are pretty addicting. And really colorful. Tossing in 200+ songs will keep me playing for a while.

1. Legend of Zelda - Breath of the Wild : It looks great, and it's a new approach for the series. I can only hope that a Switch is easily available in time for Zelda's release.
2. Persona 5 : My wife and I loved Persona 4, then went back to play P3. We were absolutely obsessed with the series a few years ago, and we're greatly anticipating P5 to play together.
3. Ni no Kuni II - Revenant Kingdom : I loved the first one and the original on DS that I imported years ago. I'm really curious to see how different this one is since collecting and battling with familiars was absent from the recent trailers. I'm also wondering if it will utilize the Wizard's Companion spellbook, or if it will have one at all.
4. Yooka-Laylee : One of the smoothest Kickstarters that I can think of (sans the Wii U cancellation for some). I loved Rare's N64 era games, and have been hyped for this one since backing it.

1. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue - Has completely new content and what essentially is a teaser for KH3 so yeah I'm pretty hyped for it.
2. South Park: The Fractured But Whole - Loved Stick of Truth so I'm hoping this one is as good or better.
3. Resident Evil VII - After playing the Beginning Hour demo in VR, it has now become an insta-buy.
4. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 Remix Collection - With this I'll finally be able to have all the games (some in cutscene form) on one system, which for Kingdom Hearts is pretty much a goddamn miracle.
5. Sonic Mania - Looks like a Sonic game pulled straight out from the late 90s so yeah definitely want to play this.
6. Horizon Zero Dawn - Looks good from all the footage we've seen and Guerilla games usually puts out decent stuff.
7. Crash Bandicoot N-Sane Trilogy - Art style maybe a little off putting at first but I'm sure I'll get over it once I play it. Especially the Crash 2 levels.
8. Project Sonic 2017 - Hoping this follows in Sonic Generations' footsteps and not Sonic Boom's
9. 999 + VLR Collection on PS4 - VLR is GOAT and having a HD port of 999 doesn't hurt either. Maybe if this sells they can afford to give ZTD a decent ending though that is probably wishful thinking.

There should be more tampons in gaming
1. Horizon; Zero Dawn
2. Nioh
3. Zelda; Breath of the Wild
4. Red Dead Redemption 2
5. Nier; Automata

That's all I got. Wish I could list things like RE Remake 2, God of War, Death Stranding and The Last of Us pt. 2 but I can't

2017 Most Anticipated Games:

1. Mass Effect: Andromeda : A follow-up to my favorite game series of all time. Really excited to finally see Mass Effect built for current gen hardware, and what that potentially means for the scope of the game (environments and explorable areas). This has been my most anticipated game for several years now, and I look forward to finally getting my hands on it

2. Star Wars Battlefront 2 : I passed on Batlefront; I liked the beta, but not enough to purchase when factoring in the scope and content of the game. Battlefront 2 having a campaign, makes me immediately more interested. On top of that I'm sure there will be an even more robust multiplayer portion, taking learning's from the first game. That makes Battlefront 2 a really compelling package

3. Red Dead Redemption 2 : During my play through of RDR, I became bored or frustrated often; yet those parts aren't what come do mind when I think of the game. The setting and environment were simply outstanding. More so then any character, the world that was created was the standout for me, and I look forward to see what they can do on current hardware.

4. Tacoma : I finally got a chance to play Gone Home when it came to consoles earlier this year, and I absolutely loved it, I thought the story and story telling were incredible. It felt really good to just be able to explore that house with no pressures pushing me along the way, other than unraveling the story. I hold Fullbright in high esteem for what they've done, and hope that Tacoma lives up to that.

5. Prey : Prey (2006) does not hold a special place in my heart. They could've called this game (Prey 2017) whatever they wanted and it wouldn't have mattered to me. The premise and setting of the game are what have me sold.

6. Destiny 2 : I never got into Destiny (played the beta and trail only), but I have an appreciation for what it was. I really like the lore and world that have been built. I found myself strangely excited to watch streams for the new raids being played. I'm eager to see what Bungie does in creating a full-on sequel to Destiny, and unlike last time where I watched by the sidelines, I'd like to jump in and actually play. Edit: Apparently not eligible. Was going off the Wikipedia list linked.

7. Cuphead : The visuals and art style alone have sold me on this game. It just looks like incredible, and like nothing else out there.

8. Resident Evil 7 : My fandom for Resident Evil games has grown over the last year after playing REmake (HD) for the first time. The smaller, more focused scope vs recent games have me really excited

9. State of Decay 2 : State of Decay is another game that I always thought looked cool, but never jump in to actually play. I really like what I see and have been hearing bout SoD2 and think this could be a great sequel

10. Scalebound : Scalebound is a game that I could see being really awesome or a big disappointment. I'm an optimist at heart, so I like to think it will be fun. I still need to see more of this to be fully sold on it.

Honorable Mentions (in no order):
x. Project Sonic 2017
x. Horizon: Zero Dawn
x. HellBlade: Senua's Sacrifice
x. South Park: The Fractured But Whole
x. Crackdown 3

1. Persona 5: I've finally decided to get a PS4 in 2017 because of this game. I liked Persona 3 and 4.

2. Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age: My favorite FF game, and my 2nd reason why I need a PS4.

3. Battletech: I backed it on Kickstarter because it looks promising, and the devs have a good reputation from their Shadowrun games.

1.Project Sonic 2017: Despite the flaws prevalent in most 3D Sonic games I tend to have a lot of fun with them. I think with the extra time given to this title, and the lessons learned over the past couple decades, Sega can make something really special here. I'm really looking forward to seeing the next trailer.

2.Yooka-Laylee: With 3D platformers so incredibly scarce these days Yooka-Laylee looks like a great call back to the days of yore. Combine that with ex-Rare employees on board the development team and I have really high hopes for this game. I already tried the toy box out and love what I see so far. Who knows, maybe it could even breathe new life into the genre if it does well enough.

3.Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue: I really want a taste of that next gen Kingdom Hearts, and I think Aqua's chapter will do a nice job of tiding me over until the main game arrives. The Kingdom Hearts X cinematic will be interesting to watch as well since I doubt I'll ever play the mobile game.

4.Sonic Mania: I have to admit that this looks like a really sweet throwback to the Genesis days. I really want to get my hands on this and give stages like Studiopolis Zone a try.

5.Sea of Thieves: After getting off the Kinect train I am eager to see the company's latest attempt to regain it's former glory. The game already oozes Rare's style in terms of visual, so here's hoping it's gameplay remains equally stellar.

6. Gravity Rush 2: The sequel to Gravity Rush looks to address pretty much every concern I had with the first game, like the mediocre combat system, and since I already thought the first game was pretty solid I can't wait to try this one out.

7. Injustice 2: I missed playing the first game in its heyday, so I really want to give it's sequel a chance around launch. I just hope Static is in this game as he was one of the few major players I wanted last time around, but didn't make the cut. Blue Beetle is looking pretty sweet though.

8.Cuphead: This game's art style is gorgeous. Seriously, it sold me day one based on that alone. I'm glad the development team has been given extra time to work on the game as the platforming stages were one of the only major critiques I had upon seeing it last. With the boss battles already looking fantastic, I think this game could really be a standout for the year.

9. Knights and Bikes: I really liked what I saw in the announcement trailer. It reminds me a lot of Costume Quest which I also really enjoyed. The talent behind the game really leaves me optimistic about the games future too.

10.Musou Stars: I love me some Dynasty Warriors. Give me a wacky cast of characters to beat up hordes of enemy with and I will be as happy as a clam.

If Dragon Quest XI has been announced for Japan next year then it's still eligible.

Do you mind clearing up Destiny 2? I see a ton of people voting for it but it's not an officially announced game yet, and they also haven't stated a year for it (though we all assume 2017)

1. Zelda Breath of the Wild
2. Dragon Quest XI
3. Resident Evil 7
4. South Park The Fractured but Whole
5. Expeditions Viking

With Nintendo's 2017 confirmed releases so few there's no way I'm getting a complete list.

If Dragon Quest XI has been announced for Japan next year then it's still eligible.

You just expanded my list by 25%.

Yea it's not eligible. No year given for it and it's technically not even announced yet.

1. Persona 5: I discovered Persona thanks to 3 Portable last year and this summer I also played P4 Golden. And they became my favorite games ever so, yeah, I want Persona 5 more than any other game. It also looks really ambitious and I like that. The new release date is 2 years after my birthday btw lol.

2. Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony: I simply love this series, especially the music and the characters. This new game looks amazing, they are trying introduce a nice bunch of new stuff and I think the fact of being a reboot will help it.

3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild: I don't know what can I say about this... I'm always hyped for a new Zelda and this one seems incredible.

4. Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy: this game is basically my childhood remaked/remastered/whatever it is. Warped is probably the game I have completed more times in my life, 2 is amazing too and I'm looking forward to those improvements on the saving system for the first one. Also the footage showed looked pretty good.

Took a quick look at some of the popular indie or indie-ish games from last years voting & compared them to this thread. Did a simple search of the keyword so I just got # of mentions, not how they were mentioned (so fewer mentions but higher ranks could result in a higher score overall). Here's some interesting stuff I noticed.

Yooka-Laylee is up noticeably. Makes sense - it had a good showing at PSX which is fresh in people's minds & they just announced a release date.

Rime is down to almost nothing whereas it was a very popular choice last year (was in the Top 50). Also makes sense since the game has had development issues since then which makes many people question whether it will ever get released (or be any good if it does).

The big KS indie RPGs like Torment haven't changed much from last year's anticipation.

The surprising thing for me though was finding out that Cuphead & Below are both down a lot. I'm wondering if it's just less interest in XBO exclusives between VR (PC, mobile, and PS4) & PS4 Pro being out and Switch coming out soon. Or maybe in the case of Cuphead, it's because it's been in development for a while so the unique art style isn't the surprise it once was.

1. Persona 5: Characters that you care about within seconds of meeting them, stakes and motivations that make sense and actually say something meaningful... and I have no doubt that it's going to live up to expectations.
2. Resident Evil 7: I've been on a blackout since the reveal, I knew right away it was going to be special and wanted to know as little as possible going in. REmake is one of the best games of all time because of the mansion, I'm hoping that this is going to follow a similar structure.
3. Horizon
4. Nier Automata
5. Sonic Generations 2: My 6 year old son is a huge Sonic fan, and we play Generations all the time. I'm still amazed at how good it is.
6. Sonic Mania: Same reason. He's mostly mastered Sonic 1&2, so it's going to be fun to dig into this.
7. Nioh
8. The Silver Case PS4
9. Danganronpa 1+2 PS4
10. Cladun Returns

2017 is going to be a big year. With Microsoft bringing the Scorpio as well, I expect them to have a few games really built around the system to showcase why you should get it.

Voting seems to be down compared to last year.

I think a lot of the big attention grabbers are gone and they haven't been suitably replaced.. Last year's voting had Dark Souls, Uncharted, Zelda, Persona, Horizon, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, The Last Guardian, etc. Now it seems like the battle of the leftovers, Zelda, Horizon and Persona 5. We dont know much about Nintendo's line-up to get excited about, Sony's basically got that one game coming out next year and all their other big exciting games they showed cant be voted for(Detroit, Spider-Man, God of War, The Last of Us Part II). Cant vote for Destiny 2 or 3D Mario even though we know they exist, other games are too far off or too early to amass much hype like Marvel vs Capcom

A sequel to Nier and a Dark Souls rip-off from the developers of Ninja Gaiden 3 are legit about to end up in the top 10 list this year, which seems crazy compared to last year's top 10.

You didn't even mention MS...

There is nothing crazy about two seemingly quality games making the list.

I obviously can't answer for everybody, but I personally had Below on my list last year and didn't even consider it this year. I think a big reason for that is the fact that we've gone another whole year without any meaningful updates. I'll play the game when it comes out, and I'm sure it will be great. It's just hard to maintain that level of excitement for a game when there isn't anything new to get excited about.

Cuphead wasn't on my list either year, but I know that my excitement for the game went down considerably when they showed off the platforming levels.

Cuphead went down from a combination of those those boring platforming levels and just over familiarity. Couple years ago it was "WOW LOOK AT THOSE VISUALS!" Now its "that thing still hasnt come out yet?"

It's crazy that people don't only have to vote for the big generic mainstream western games only now? I'd say 2017 is better with much better variety and better games than what you listed.

Did a search for Pit People. No results. It's crazy how The Behemoth went from having one of the most popular & successful indie games of all-time (Castle Crashers) to having next-to-no hype for their upcoming game.

Yah,2017 seems much better its not even funny.

JC you are going to love it, and all coming surprises :)

1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: The upcoming new Zelda is always my most anticipated game.
2. Scalebound: I know almost nothing about this game but in Kamiya I trust.
3. Nier Automata: I'm a big fan of Platinum, and action games in general. This looks like a new Bayo/MGR tier game.
4. Nioh: A Dark Souls-like game but the skill ceiling is definitely higher! This game could do some serious damage.
5. Gravity Rush 2: Played the remaster last year and loved every bit of it.
6. Dragon Quest XI: I liked DQ8 back then...

The question of whether 2017 is "better" wasn't the conversation(and its not like it be a very fruitful one, considering 2017 hasnt even fuckin happen yet), it was the perception of voting being down from last year. Because like it or not, those big games draw bigger numbers. A lot more people care about Uncharted and Dark Souls than Dragon Quest whatever number for 3DS. With the absence of those bigger titles known on the horizon means less passion, that means less votes.
