Call me delusion man, but I still think DQXI will be only game that can do 1 million on PS4 FW. Except N.Switch really really kill it.

1m first week? If it makes 1m LTD S-E should be more than happy

Are we in the same GAF forum? People were expecting this year to be better than last year and PS3's best year/beating 3DS in sales/over 2 million in Japan for the year.
It all depends on which predictions you're referring to. People gave different predictions. I cant recall that the general consensus was that the PS4 was going to do ~2 million this year. In 2015, i remember some predictions that the PS4 wouldnt sell 1 million if FF15 wasnt released that year, while others probably thought it would. Someone are bound to be more correct or wrong than others.

3DS should surpass PS2 total hardware sales next week (21,833,216).

Oh, completely forgot about that. So it'll end up as the 3rd best-selling platform of all times in Japan, after the NDS and the GB, right?

Nintendo 3DS - Road to 22 million units

LTD = 21 780 183
Units left = 219 817
Weeks left = 3 weeks
Needs = 73 272 units / week.

So yeah, I think there's no more doubt now, 22 million in 2016 confirmed. If you add the 100k from the Pokémon 2DS bundles, that will be next week, most likely.

Is dual pack counted twice? And if not, why not?

Counting it as two units here, though MC counts it as 1 unit.

Hmm, nowhere near as bad as Day 1 sell-through indicate. I think it should be able to avoid bomba bins.

This may be the first Yakuza entry that Asian version outsells Japanese version.

Possible, though it remains to be seen if there'll still be a decline in total sales from Kiwami/0 for Japan+Asia. Think there would be an increase given the additional effort on localisation - the Chinese localisation out day and date on 8/12.

Soul Reverse Zero looks interesting particularly the 3d models in battle but it looks (so far) to be fairly derivative of Chain Chronicle / Hortensia Saga to really stand out in the crowd. We'll see though.

Maybe Y6 lower sales is a sign that Nagoshi and co should take a short break and work on something else *coughmonkeyballcough*

Nothing really surprising overall except maybe Mario Maker's hold. Always knew that was going to do well in Japan. I was slightly hoping that FF would hold slightly better due to the holidays, but I guess that won't help much. Last Guardian and Miitopia are meh, but not disasters. Yakuza, well that was expected I guess. Year of decline continues.

I really hope Nintendo Switch sells more like a portable and less like a home console in Japan because when you look at it 3DS is still a monster when compared to Wii U sales

Damn that Yakuza 6 number is impressive considering the deadness of Japanese market. I guess the Yakuza fanbase is really loyal and wouldn't going anywhere anytime soon.

You mean the fanbase that halved between consecutive numbered entries?

Damn, that Yakuza number. Knew it was coming though. All we need now is Resident Evil VII next year which I'm convinced is going to be the worst of all.

Pokemans and Mario holding well. And Minecraft climbing! Incredible the Vita version has been charting for so long. Wonder if it'll make it two years (think it possibly will since it'll be just before Switch launch).

The switch to first person will most likely be hurting RE7 quite a bit in Japan.

Though I'm sure Capcom knew this and the shift is very much aimed at the western audience (which is where they get most of the series' sales anyway).

Unless Capcom mishandles Monster Hunter too, the time it will be the company's biggest franchise is coming closer after what they've done to REVII.

I have some doubts that japanese people will accept Switch as a portable system considering how big it looks

I have the feeling that Nintendo is looking at the west market as Sony is doing with PS4, the only place in which PS4 is not a success is.... Japan

SD Gundam sold more on Vita than PS4, and it has not been the only one this year
probably Sony should have realized that portable market is still reliable; focusing only on PS4 actually is not paying the efforts they're doing

and PS4 Pro is just 1/10 of the total sales, Japan doesn't care at pumped graphic as people in the west

really curious to hear comments here in Japan on Jan.13 about Switch

After reading through this thread, FFXV sales are not so bad after all. I am sure it will hard to sell the first shipment but if we count digital, it should be able to creep to 1 million.

So let me get this clear...PS4 is selling ok if we compare it to the PS3 but the software is down? Why is that? What are PS4 owners playing?

Prediction: This is going to end up selling +500k

It's going to sell through word of mouth and experiential exposure, I'm not sure how much it can sell at this point of the 3DS market life, maybe it can hit that 500k mark and go GOLD. I think that would be fantastic sales for a blue ocean new IP on the 3DS at this point.

Persona 5 was up 50% over Persona 4 though.

Yes. One franchise overperforming doesn't make another game somehow less successful. Unlike P5, which is a brand new entry in a big media push which is rising in popularity and has to lead Atlus into the future, TLG is an artist fulfilling a promise to his fans before riding into the sunset. There is no more team, no more long term plan, and there will likely not be another Ueda game of this scale ever again.

predecessors.

If anything PS4 is probably doing the best when compared to its predecessor.

I see Asia/West/digital saviors is still in full effect. Hopes and dreams.

I think digital sales definitely might be a factor for Yakuza 6's perceived success but more so because it has microtransactions in it, a first for the series.

So the clan creator mode has rare cards you can only obtain by paying for it. There are currently 6 on PSN at 500 yen a piece and I believe they're of series characters like Majima, Akiyama etc and Yokoyama has hinted they might add more fan favourites in future.

Then outside of that there are wafers you can buy which has 2 of 50 cards for the wrestlers you can team up in the game with. They cost about 300 yen + tax and would probably require a fair bit of trading to get all of them.

I definitely think Yakuza 6 would have one of the worst ROI for a Yakuza title but there are still different factors to think about than simply packaged sales in Japan for wither it meets SEGA's expectations.

The mobile spinoff of Border Break actually did quite well back in the day.

That said, in terms of especially notable mobile games, Sega had Hortensia Saga after Chain Chronicle.

Oh yeah no doubt they've had other successes but what I meant is it seems Soul Reverse Zero is the first title that seems to be a breakout success for the company in the scale of Chain Chronicle, they never seem to have built upon the latter's success in the market with other mobile titles.

They had a few other titles with large-ish download counts: https://www.segasammy.co.jp/english/ir/library/pdf/stockholder/2016/201603_2q_kabutsu_e6_katsudo.pdf

Released in April 2015, Hortensia SAGA surpassed 3 million
downloads in October. This RPG is an epic tale of war,
in which players learn about the history woven by myriad
knights at the mercy of fates in the war.

MONSTER GEAR (released in May) also surpassed 3 million
downloads in August. Anyone can enjoy the authentic
hunting action immediately, with the easy controls of this
new era hunting action RPG from SEGA.

Sen-no-kaizoku (released in August) already surpassed 2
million downloads in October. Players determine the course
of the battle with their strategies and decisions, while enjoying
compelling pirate fleet battles.

IIRC Hortensia is the one holding up best in revenue.

Edit:

Yes, it's one of their top 3 digital earners from Japan: https://www.segasammy.co.jp/english/pdf/release/201600803_2q_siryo_e_final.pdf

I wonder if SE have sold through half of their WW launch figure yet.
Why not?

FFXV has done really well digitally as evident from November sales chart for PSN that counted just 2 days of its sales.

We have confirmed sell through of atleast 770k in Japan and ~168k in UK alone so that should easily cover the first million. I have no doubt that the 5 million they announced, which included digital BTW, includes has a sellthrough of more than 50%.

It seems games for portable consoles (mostly 3DS) are still doing fine despite the strong mobile competition, but games for home consoles (almost only PS4) are on the decline.

Why is that? Why does it seem that a growing part of Japan is either not playing games at home anymore or just playing portable games instead?

Unless, I am interpreting the under-performance of these games (FFXV, Yakuza 6) as a trend while maybe it just means Japan don't like them as much anymore... (after all Persona 5 did better than predecessors)

FF XV should do something crazy like > 100.000 digital sales to crawl to 1 million in Japan... I'm not seeing it.

There were also plenty of underperforming 3DS games this year.

I own Yakuza 1-3 and might consider 4 but I'm not surprised to see sales drop off. I don't expect newer ones to pull in the same numbers. We really need a new ip with a new story from these guys.

Tell that to PaZudora or MonHun Stories T_T

EDIT: Thank god Fire Emblem escaped the curse
