They had a few other titles with large-ish download counts: https://www.segasammy.co.jp/english/ir/library/pdf/stockholder/2016/201603_2q_kabutsu_e6_katsudo.pdf

IIRC Hortensia is the one holding up best in revenue.

Edit:

Yes, it's one of their top 3 digital earners from Japan: https://www.segasammy.co.jp/english/pdf/release/201600803_2q_siryo_e_final.pdf

I stand corrected! I had completely forgotten about Monster Gear, yep both it and War Pirates made a big splash and quickly vanished off of Sega's reports, they only mention Hortensia Saga now true. I hadn't realised it went past 3 million downloads, what a shame that Sega's reports aren't as in depth as they were, would be easier to judge the barometer of success.

Makes me wonder if the arcade version will help push the mobile game more and keep it relevant in a way that War Pirates and Monster Gear could not.

Call me delusion man, but I still think DQXI will be only game that can do 1 million on PS4 FW. Except N.Switch really really kill it.
And on the other hand, the Switch could easily have several million sellers, between pokemon, splatoon and others.
Well, it DQXI was doing good on Switch it would be nice.

Damn, that Super Mario Maker 3DS second week is impressive. It seems like YSO was nowhere close to expecting that hold.

And that discrepancy between Media Create and Famitsu concerning the 3DS keeps being pretty huge.

I do think it's important to note the increasingly difficult conditions for dedicated devices in Japan but it shouldn't be treated as a free pass. In fact I'd argue that it's more important than ever to have a clear strategy and put out an appealing product.

This week it was 2DS Pokemon LE hw and it was its best selling week ever, next there is 2DS NSMB2 LE bundle. So far the launch of 2DS has played its role instead of price drop of the other 3DS models.

As for Mario Maker a few weeks ago I would put it at 500k LTD. I'll wait for next week's numbers first but with 4 big weeks remaining and being at 300k already it could be at 600-700k one month from now.

So Sega/Atlus has shot down the possibility of a Switch version of Valkyria despite the existence of both Vita and Xbox One Skus. Not sure if that's worth discussing.

What's the deal between Media Create TLG at 82k and Famitsu's 68k? Is the discrepancy to do with digital speculations now in software charts (I see hardware is quite different too of course)? I'm used to seeing next to no difference in the past between them.

FF6 W1 vs. W2
Code:
1 SFC Final Fantasy VI Square	278159 1,209,992 New
Code:
1 SFC Final Fantasy VI	Square	97442 423,873 / 1,633,864
-65%

We'll have FF5 W2 numbers in a few days (new famitsu ordered).
Sales may have actually gone up WoW for FF5.

Oh, completely forgot about the 2DS bundle, my brain keep putting its alongside Pokémon Sun and Moon for some reason.

About the Mario bundle, it will be interesting to see if Super Mario Run will have the same impact as Pokémon GO (unlikely, but we will see). It'll be interesting to see NSMB2 shot back up in MC Top 20 all of a sudden, that will allow us to get an updated LTD for the game.

Weekly Famitsu data does not include digital estimates, only the magazine has those (but they do count digital card sales). Honestly, Famitsu / MC discrepancies are nothing really new.

I heard they were all moving from ps4 exclusively to the switch tho Xp
People think this because of the lack of Vita going forward, although I think Vita is here to stay in Japan until late 2017.

At this point, I wonder if FFVII remake would break 1mil first week in Japan...
The first episode should have no trouble clearing half million but the subsequent episodes will definitely drop in sales, just like FFXIII.

Vita will most likely stay until 2017 yea but also I never got the mindset anyway. If anything vita will get dropped switch will be added.

I don't think the Vita/Switch audience will overlap so there is a good chance a lot of the niche Vita franchise will be long gone. We will see once Switch is out though.

Why not?

FFXV has done really well digitally as evident from November sales chart for PSN that counted just 2 days of its sales.

We have confirmed sell through of atleast 770k in Japan and ~168k in UK alone so that should easily cover the first million. I have no doubt that the 5 million they announced, which included digital BTW, includes has a sellthrough of more than 50%.

If maths are the same between XIII and XV in the US as they are in the UK, US sell-through looks like 880,000 (W1 705k, W2 175k), then add 10% for Canada and NA physical sold through is around 1.0m (~970k).

How much does the UK represent overall PAL sales? That could help us with estimating sell-through in that region.

Some are making the move to other platforms. Like for instance Senran kagura peach beach splash is ps4 exclusive bye bye vita but I could also see it coming to the switch because there's an audience there. I just don't agree with the notion that somehow franchises will be moving to another platform when it's not even out. These games still need more than Japan they aren't ditching the ps4 if the switch is more successful.

Why is that surprising? Not all third parties in Japan are going to blindly jump to Switch.

Of course not but on the surface shouldn't it be one of the more likely releases to add a Switch SKU?

1)There's a Vita SKU which means it's not a solely western focused product and it's not out or reach technologically.
2) There's an Xbox One SKU despite poor sales/presence of JRPGs on the Xbox platform, so opportunity cost for additional SKUs is probably pretty low.
3) It's published by Sega/Atlus who are relatively big supporters of Nintendo hardware.

Noone smart is going to simply stick around on the vita the writings on the wall and it's pretty much over. The quicker the developer can transition to the PS4/Switch/mobile the better because having the majority of your fanbase on the vita is the last thing you want to have.

Sincerly, I think we're putting too much importance on a title that just got announced for a Western release, before the January 12th event. We know there's an NDA going on, especially for major publishers, even when considering an exception like LEGO City Undercover...which actually hasn't been announced by WB yet, its only mention is the tweet from the LEGO account; for reference, LEGO World's announcement has been published by both LEGO and WB's Twitter accounts, plus a PR from WB themselves. So, I suppose it could "escape" the NDA by letting the announcement to a tweet from the LEGO company + the game's former Nintendo-only legacy.

However, even if it doesn't get a Switch version after January 12th (which is what John Hardin's tweets imply), we should remember that its Japanese release date is January 17th, well before March, when Switch comes out. It's certainly not such an important title that could have no problems at selling despite a two-months late release or (in general) there's no problem if some titles releasing quite earlier than the console's launch are not part of the Switch's launch lineup: there can be several reasons, between impossibility of developing a version for the new platform in time or not believing an additional, two-months late version would add so much sales.

Given what we've seen on the game I'd argue Switch dodged a bullet.

True but two months is a very short window as far as late ports for new platforms go. Options would be extremely limited if nothing that old was considered.

It's releasing in Japan before the Switch releases there. Deep Silver probably did not want to order a devkit + form the developpers for a single SKU released on west-only and which will bomb no matter what.

A while ago the consensus seemed to be that Dragon Quest Builders & World of Final Fantasy were almost certain for ports and now we're quibbling over a port that'd be two months late?

DQB's 14 months was a pipe dream!

But seriously, it doesn't matter. It'll grab support going forward which is what's more important, not individual cases of games which released before the console comes out.

Sega has put up their 140 page annual report in English: http://www.segasammy.co.jp/english/ir/library/pdf/printing_annual/2016/all_ar2016_e.pdf

I don't have anything to pull from it at the moment, but I thought I'd mention it so people can start looking at it now.

Edit:

So Sega notes they've been streamlining the number of packaged goods titles they release to good success:

Packaged Game Software Area
Streamlining the number of titles and focusing efforts on the marketing
of mainstay titles improved profitability. Although revenues were
lower, the packaged game software area achieved operating income of
¥2.4 billion, compared with the previous fiscal year’s operating loss

Edit 2:

Okay, this cracked me up:

Also, the Group has
become more proactive in the appointment of outside directors.
Japan’s Corporate Governance Code calls for companies to
appoint at least two outside directors. For this reason, many companies
are appointing outside directors for the first time or increasing
the number of outside directors. Among these companies, I
have heard of some that are complying with the code and appointing
outside directors reluctantly. However, SEGA SAMMY
HOLDINGS appointed two outside directors in 2007—long before
the establishment of the Corporate Governance Code. Moreover,
the Group appointed an additional outside director in 2016. As a
result, three of its eight directors are outside directors. I do not
feel the Group has simply appointed outside directors; rather, it
has established an appropriate culture in which outside directors
can state opinions freely and business management reflects their
recommendations and criticisms.
I had noticed a lot of outside directors getting appointed in recent years, and thought that maybe Japanese companies had done some introspection and realized that it's incredibly dumb to only have internal directors, but no, Japan just passed a law forcing them to.

Edit 3:

It looks like Total War: Warhammer drove their PC game division from a $3.4 million loss last year to a $68 million profit this year.

I didn't know someone could be that... enthusiastic about outside directors.

"Yeah well, we at SEGA, we were appointing outside directors before they were cool!"

Is it possible? I only saw a little trailer and the game looked a bit like Fantasy Life

Maybe i am missing something

I would say it looked like straight-up trash but that may be presomptuous of mine.
I doubt it will be anything major though. Is it still on track for a July release ? I wonder in what state the 3DS will be by then.

Worst opening week for the main series since the second game 10 years ago and debuting below spin offs like Dead Souls and Ishin, not even doing all that better than Kenzan or the PSP game.

Opening for Yakuza 6 is not bad, but I'd consider it very dissapointing, it's the fourth Yakuza game on PS4 and it's not some cheap game or anything.

It was also bundled, which explains the good hold for PS4 this week.

SEGA needs to start giving consideration to other viable platforms (mobile/PC), alongside PS consoles, for the Yakuza series.

Unless sales from the rest of Asia are compensating for these declines, I don't see why they would be content with letting the franchise fade like this.

Is Sony financially involved with the Yakuza games? How are they able to secure exclusivity for every one of those games this gen?

Wait does that mean they're planning Etrian Odyssey games for consoles and mobile/PC? Or is that just talking about what they're already doing? And is it counting eShop as digital(I doubt it).

The infographics are pretty clear but I'm still confused!
